Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

Olivers - the country voted leave by 52% - this is not a verifiable advantage to leaving.

Terminal cancer patients, and people needing insulin will be put at risk by brexit putting these drigs in short supply.

Insulin is one of the drugs named as being at risk of short supply in the Uk from brexit, because it is not produced in the UK.

You have not listed any benefits to UK citizens to leaving - everything you have said will be worse under brexit.

I realise this was not commonly known when people voted in the Referendum, and I sympathise. My mother has cancer and I'm terrified any drugs she needs will be affected by brexit.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 01:38

Depressing isn't it.

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/09/2019 02:37

Insulin is already in short supply. We are thinking they are stockpiling it.

If they are not stockpiling then where is all the insulin going?

For DP if the worst happens and he can't get his medication then he has said he would prefer to drift off in to a diabetic coma than face the inevitable painful death because of his cancer

Socksontheradiator · 03/09/2019 06:45

If they are stockpiling insulin (can it be stockpiled?I thought it has a short shelf life) then clearly there are concerns about supply after brexit.
And that's only one drug.
So to revoke would be so much better. I still think they are deliberately causing no deal panic and confusion so that a minutely altered WA will be signed off at the last minute.

hazandduck · 03/09/2019 06:56

How awful for you and your DH @Oliversmumsarmy. I’m so sorry Flowers

SleepyKat · 03/09/2019 07:05

I can’t get my prescription medication any more. I’m buying it on the black market (Facebook) and sometimes paying a fortune to get it shipped from America. But I’ve also put myself on a half dose to try and make it last and am often going weeks without any.

Mamamia456 · 03/09/2019 07:41

Zebras - Omg your posts are hilarious!

You have teenagers? Be a parent to them instead of trying to act like them. Gwan, Gwan, Gwan.

Mamamia456 · 03/09/2019 07:46

Sleepykat - Why can't you get your medication. Have you spoken to your GP and what have they said?

I have been able to get mine, although different brands, but that's always been the case.

Manontry · 03/09/2019 07:51

That is really sad oliversmummy. I'm sorry to hear that.

Leakinglikeacolander · 03/09/2019 07:55

@Oliversmumsarmy Seriously your dh is begging for his insulin prescription?

Mamamia456 · 03/09/2019 07:59

Zebras - Where have you read that the Government has told us to stockpile food and medication?

I haven't seen that, do you have a link?

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 03/09/2019 08:01

Seriously your dh is begging for his insulin prescription?

No,that's not what was posted.

So sorry oliversmummyFlowers

No we don't, we couldn't even do that in WW2, with a much smaller population and 31/10 will be the end of the UK growing season.

You guys just can't do facts can you?

But i note the benefit of Brexit (for you) is we won't die of starvation.

Manontry · 03/09/2019 08:17

I am sure there are remainers that haven't stockpiled (me). I can't afford it! I have a pathetically small kitchen.

Songsofexperience · 03/09/2019 08:19

Dp just wants us out as then he believes we can start getting the a deal in place to continue the supply of insulin and he can do away with this begging and pleading and jumping through hoops to get his medication.

Very sorry to read that olivermum but the heart breaking reality is that no deal would make things much worse for people like your DP. I'm terrified of the consequences of no deal on meds specifically.

huntinghighandlow · 03/09/2019 08:32

'For a long time now he has had to beg for his insulin prescription'

Yes she did post that. Diabetes UK themselves don't see a problem:

the manufacturers tell us they have gone beyond the recommendations made by the government – they are keeping at least 16 weeks of additional stock. People should continue to get prescriptions and use their medicines in the normal way.

Leakinglikeacolander · 03/09/2019 08:36

@MrsPellegrinoPetrichor I must be reading a different post then Confused

Leakinglikeacolander · 03/09/2019 08:39

@Oliversmumsarmy I'm sorry for what you and your dh are going through, I'd be getting my local MP on the case to be honest to at least ascertain exactly what's going on so that you are not being fobbed off.

GrimalkinsCrone · 03/09/2019 09:06

I think one of the slowest, saddest consequences is going to be the slow dawning upon the Leave voters amongst the farmers, fisherfolk and less wealthy as the reality of what they chose begins to bite hard and not let go.
When they realise that the brave new world was as real as Father Christmas, and that the old ways of wealth and poverty are returning.
I’m waiting for the rule that benefit claimants have to do service in the fields, for the Greater Good.

SleepyKat · 03/09/2019 09:07

Sleepykat - Why can't you get your medication. Have you spoken to your GP and what have they said?

My consultant knows, there's nothing they can do. No alternative. There's only one manufacturer world wide and they don't make enough.

Walkaround · 03/09/2019 09:52

I am not stockpiling because I do not believe the situation will be one of stockpile or starve to death (and if it is, then stockpilers should be upping their home security systems to protect their stashes...). It is impossible to stockpile the fresh food that will be the real issue when it comes to shortages, anyway. Medicines I am worried about, but I can't stockpile for illnesses I might have, and I have nothing wrong with my health at this time! And I certainly have no intention of stockpiling highly flammable petrol in my home. If we have massive problems, half of them will be caused by people's ridiculous behaviour, stockpiling random stuff because they are panicking, when that will do nothing to prevent chaos that can only be resolved by government action, not by individuals stockpiling random stuff. If this is not sorted out at the national level, we are all going to suffer chaos, regardless of personal stockpiling.

Mamamia456 · 03/09/2019 09:54

Sleepykat - So a manfacturing problem then, nothing to do with Brexit.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/09/2019 09:59

My consultant knows, there's nothing they can do. No alternative. There's only one manufacturer world wide and they don't make enough.

What am I missing, surely this is a problem with manufacturing and nothing to do with brexit?

Walkaround · 03/09/2019 10:11

If there is already an international shortage, I can see why customs chaos and dropping out of the EU without a deal could cause the UK to become a lower priority for getting its orders fulfilled compared to other countries, at least for a while. Countries are in competiton with each other for supplies and we are making trade with the UK look pretty irksome atm.

kjhkj · 03/09/2019 10:11

I am not stockpiling because I do not believe the situation will be one of stockpile or starve to death

But surely there is a half way house. Its not one extreme or the other. I have stockpiled stuff we use frequently to make things as normal as possible and to ensure the maximum nutritional benefit to my DC. I don't believe we will have a situation where there is no food but do think there may be certain things rationed for a while. And if you can supplement what is available with stuff you've put aside then why wouldn't you? Even if its just a few tins of tomatoes, some long life milk and some flour and yeast.
