Well comments from rabid leavers (not just on here) show that they either don't give a shit about democracy or don't understand how dangerous this is.

Greatnorthwoods · 28/08/2019 13:04

People who have enough money to hoard food etc will ensure shortages for less fortunate people. So don’t do it. Be reasonable. Prices will go up and that’s making it difficult for others too

Unfortunately it’s now a situation of planning your survival. Social consciousness is no longer applicable in a survival of the fittest situation.

verticality · 28/08/2019 13:27

It is not a situation of planning for your survival, and there is no need to be quite so ready to throw social decency out of the window.

It is commonsense to store some food. I'm sure supermarkets will be predicting elevated demand and will have plans in place. There is absolutely nothing to suggest that those storing food are creating shortages. Quite the opposite is likely to be true: should we run short of some things in a no deal scenario (which seems highly predictable and likely) such preparations should actually be quite helpful in managing demand.

Ticklemeelmo · 28/08/2019 13:39

What an absolute shower of shit

I've got dual citizenship and a second passport from an EU country, can see it being used to move abroad in the very near future. Feel very sorry for remain voters who don't have that option, things here are going to get so, so much worse if this goes ahead.

MargoLovebutter · 28/08/2019 13:41

The DUP welcomes it!!!!!

Nigel Farage has decided that the Brexit Party will fight the PM "every inch of the way" if he pursues the Withdrawal Agreement that Theresa May negotiated with the EU - BUT will help Mr Johnson secure a majority in a general election if he seeks what he calls a "clean break" Brexit.

So is that what all the leavers wanted Phimma - or just some of them? Wouldn't it be great if there were somewhere that this could be debated - like oh, say Parliament?!

Tanith · 28/08/2019 13:48

"Johnson has at least got the balls, no pun intended, to carry through the democratic wish of this country."

It's precisely because he hasn't got the guts or the conviction to debate in Parliament and bring them with him that he has done this.

He can't bluff and bluster his way through a debate and he knows it. He'd be held accountable by Parliament so he's taken the coward's way to avoid it.

Bummywitch · 28/08/2019 13:48

Good christ get a grip!

frumpety · 28/08/2019 13:49

Hows the pound bearing up to Boris's news ?

ContinuityError · 28/08/2019 13:50

The DUP welcomes it!!!!!

Of course they do.

A new parliamentary session = a new billion pound bung to buy a new C&S agreement.

BubblesBuddy · 28/08/2019 13:54

Well the DUP don’t care that much about their own Parliament and haven’t done for years.

Obviously, with regard to hoarding, it’s the extent of it and whether panic buying ensues. In this scenario supply cannot meet demand. If this happens, and with mass panick buying it’s a real risk, the price goes up. I’m glad people on benefits can afford to hoard as so frequently we hear they are attending food banks. However if the majority of the population hoard, then hoard some more when those items are going out of “eat by” date time, there are likely to be big problems. We import around 50% of our food. Our own food production is subject to the weather. Crop production varies and so does animal production. We import lots of milk and cheese. We need to stop being so “me, me, me” and think of everyone.

MarshaBradyo · 28/08/2019 13:55

Incredible

Really the last three years one incredible thing after another

MargoLovebutter · 28/08/2019 13:58

Owen Jones is calling for people to meet at 5.30pm tonight at College Green. I'm tempted to go.

SouthChinaSea234 · 28/08/2019 14:11

At least this brings matters to a head. Parliament has faffed around for three years - opposing the deal that May negotiated but failing to come up with an alternative political strategy to deliver anything concrete.

This move will convince the EU that Brexit is really going to go ahead. Without this certainty they have no incentive to move on the Irish backstop. With it they will probably move enough to allow BJ to claim that the is significant and push what is essentially the May deal through a Parliament scared of the alternative. My money is on this.

If that does not work we will end up with a general election which will at least change the parliamentary arithmetic and allow a new government to resolve the issue one way or the other.

We cannot continue indefinitely with this paralysis.

And I say this as a remainer.

frumpety · 28/08/2019 14:13

Just out of interest why does it need to be 5 weeks , I appreciate that only accounts for 23 sitting days ? could the Queens speech be moved forward or the period of time reduced to 1 week if it is indeed a purely constitutional normality to end one parliamentary session ?

BubblesBuddy · 28/08/2019 14:16

Few people think the parliamentary arithmetic will change very much. It would need many leave Labour areas to vote Conservative. Will this happen? Unlikely. Conservative areas might vote Lib Dem but Conservative Leave areas will still vote Conservative. So what will the numbers be? Not much different!

zebrasdontwearbras · 28/08/2019 14:17

Does anyone even want an election?

I'm a staunch remainer, and I don't even know who I would vote for. I think we'd end up with another hung parliament, and Farage would probably finally win a seat.

BubblesBuddy · 28/08/2019 14:17

It is 5 weeks to stop debate and questioning in Parliament! It is silencing MPs. It ensures no scrutiny of what Boris is doing! That’s why it’s 5 weeks and not 1.

BubblesBuddy · 28/08/2019 14:18

It is not ending a Parliamentary session. It’s suspending it to stop scrutiny and debate.

zebrasdontwearbras · 28/08/2019 14:19

Pound is rallying slightly.

Permission sought to suspend parliament!
frumpety · 28/08/2019 14:24

Was parliament going to be sitting anyway during that 5 weeks , I thought September was conference season ? Does parliament sit when the conferences are on ?

verticality · 28/08/2019 14:26

"Few people think the parliamentary arithmetic will change very much"

Wait, what? Am I taking crazy pills? All the current data suggests that there will be a big change, doesn't it? Of course, polls aren't entirely reliable, a week is a long time in politics, and things can change. But every single recent poll has predicted a resounding Tory victory.

The last 4 polls have placed the Tories 12%, 6%, 10% and 14% ahead. The problem is that Brexit Party voters are heading back to them, while the Remain voters are steadfastly split between Lib Dems, Greens and Labour. In terms of the electoral calculus, 6pts is generally the critical figure for a skin-of-your-teeth majority.

Iggly · 28/08/2019 15:06

Conference season lasts about 3 weeks

Rhubarbisevil · 28/08/2019 15:08

Well,I never thought that I would type this, but Bloody Queen Angry

Iggly · 28/08/2019 15:09

Johnson has at least got the balls, no pun intended, to carry through the democratic wish of this country

Please define what the democratic wish is?

Do we discount those who didn’t want to leave without a deal?

Why have we ended up in this position of no deal?

If it was what everybody wanted, then why wasn’t it proposed three years ago when the referendum was first held? And when the result was first announced?

No one said “hey let’s go for no deal”.

No one did.
