@BubblesBuddy I'm on benefits and have 3 children so in January and February I started buying the odd bit of extra food and household essentials. An extra bag of rice or pasta with each weekly shop, extra passata, extra shampoo etc. By March I had a good buffer in that would last around a month. When we got the extension I stopped buying extra but have started again recently. Price rises will mean I'll struggle to buy essentials so having a buffer guards against this. My Waitrose, Tesco and Asda are still fully stocked so I've not caused any shortages and neither has my mum who has been doing the same.

The pound.

I also expect the queen to do what is most constitutionally/proceduraly correct.

I just would have hoped there were to some legal checks and balances to say 'hang on, suspending parliament for a month before such a major decision doesn't seem like the best idea'

woman19 · 28/08/2019 10:36

There are no legal remedies for this.

They are in.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2019 10:38

I don't think there is a legal process to stop this. Despite of course this not being a new government.

MargoLovebutter · 28/08/2019 10:40

I thought John Major was optimistic that he could mount a legal challenge.

He’s done it

SansaSnark · 28/08/2019 10:43

If a labour government had crashed the pound in this way, tories would be up in arms. Surely if nothing else people can see this is trashing our economy.

I don't believe anyone voted for this and I hope something can be done to prevent it. Is there a way for people to make it clear that they don't want this?

Can opposition mps pass a bill to prevent it?

Could parliament just ignore BlowJob and sit anyway?

cherin · 28/08/2019 10:44

Is that it? Is that the way it’s done?

Boris is hoping for a vote of no confidence. He hasn't a clue about how to get Brexit and wants a GE but can't be seen to bring down the government. So he wants the opposition to do it so he has someone to blame.

ContinuityError · 28/08/2019 10:46

Before brexit it was the zombie apocalypse stash.

We just call it the Brexit zombie apocalypse stash now.

ThirdAidKit · 28/08/2019 10:46

Please can someone give me a clear explanation about the likely outcome / impact of this?

So confused by it all Sad

verticality · 28/08/2019 10:49

Parliament will meet for a few days before it is prorogued.

The legislative route is theoretically still open, right? But they'd REALLY have to get their skates on.

A VoNC can still happen. A government of national unity can still happen theoretically, though it's going to involve some serious, grown-up compromises.

Part of me thinks this is a piece of theatre, to win populist support for a forthcoming GE with the aim of changing the parliamentary arithmetic. BoJo will look like the so-called "Champion of the People", Parliament as the "Evil Elite" to idiot Leavers. The polls at the moment are NOT favourable for the Remain cause - basically, everyone who is against a no deal exit will need to vote Labour to stop it, and that is going to require serious nose-holding on the part of centrists.

ghostofharrenhal · 28/08/2019 10:57

He is a bastard, but I don't think anyone can stop him unless there is a VONC. This session was supposed to last two years and we've gone beyond that now, and I think this is the argument he's using, and saying that it's nowt to do with Brexit.

But hey Leavers, you're taking back control. Trouble is you have handed it straight on to a bunch of toffs who will all right thanks very much if the shit hits the fan.

MargoLovebutter · 28/08/2019 11:03

ghost, how can there be a VONC if parliament is prorogued?

FUCK ME - how has this happened?

ghostofharrenhal · 28/08/2019 11:07

MargoLovebutter there would still be time before Parliament is prorogued I think as it's due to sit again next week.

Graphista · 28/08/2019 11:12

What the fuck!!

How the HELL has it got to this? We're living in a fucking dictatorship with the worst off being completely shafted. Utterly outrageous and disastrous decision.

I've emailed my MP (who is probably getting bombarded) and SM is going NUTS!

As a Scot I have to say I think the time has REALLY come to say enough is enough and for us to leave the uk.

I also wouldn't blame NI for doing the same - and I don't necessarily mean they need to reunify with ROI either, but become an independent country within the eu.

Certainly I no longer feel that the current U.K. Govt gives a shit about anyone but themselves!

That's terrifying.

Jaffacakebeast · 28/08/2019 11:14

Another chapter in the shitstorm that is Brexit. I blame the MPs. The MPs who sat on manifestos they fundamentally disagreed with just to keep their jobs. Bunch of traitorous, cowardice, self serving bastards

Nat6999 · 28/08/2019 11:17

Wasnt there something about if there was political disturbance which included a general election, Article 50 would be suspended? The VNC really needs calling for on the first day they go back.

RuggerHug · 28/08/2019 11:18

Sorry but as someone not in the UK and not knowing all the ins and outs of how it works can I ask here? Is it essentially

  1. BJ says prorogue, effectively locks the doors of parliament to stop anything happening.
  2. Queen has to approve him or can tell him to sod off.
  3. if he does effectively shut up shop, it's basically him and his mates running the show not answering to anyone?

Is that it?

Jaffacakebeast · 28/08/2019 11:19

Pretty much, it’s procedural though, therefore the queen is very unlikely so say or do anything about it

MargoLovebutter · 28/08/2019 11:22

Thanks ghost just signed that petition! Not sure how much good it will do, but makes me feel better doing something.

Iggly · 28/08/2019 11:22

It’s not standard procedure. It’s close enough but not.
