Westminstenders: Lets get on with...

Admitting the mandate for leaving has expired.

The newspapers today are full of Talk of both Corbyn and May panicking that Brexit is destroying their parties, so after nearly 3 years of party politics they have decided that actually they can agree on something in the next week or so. Not because it's in the national interest but because they don't fancy mutual self assured destruction.

If they do manage to cobble something together then it with be rushed and shite.

If they don't they will be punished at the Euro elections by a Remain / Leave pincer action.

They can spin it all they like from their local election disaster that it was people wanting to get on with Brexit. It certainly does not change the reality that those people who were most likely to vote are fed up with the pair of them. And that there is a strong indication that the most motivated voters are remain leaning. Perhaps its true that leavers stayed home in protest. If they did, what will they do if the Brexit Party stand candidates at a general election? Maybe they will vote, but you can't argue that they view voting itself as an important act. Spoilt ballots were up, but not that up. If the pair do manage a deal, then we have Brexited which might satisfy some. The trouble is the underlying issues are not to do with the European Union. And even if we leave with a deal that does not resolve our future trading relationship. The poison that is Brexit won't end. And the voters will realise that soon enough. Leaving even with a deal will harm the economy, and that's only going to fuel discontent.

It's therefore hard to see where either party go from here. Not when they are effectively split internally. The poison is here to stay.

Spinning it as 'it shows the public want us to get on with Brexit' isn't going to help their cause with voters who still think leaving is a national disaster. Those voters will still think its a national disaster and will be even more pissed at being ignored and dismissed once again.

Where is the incentive to return to voting Labour or Conservative?

The Euro Elections, if they go ahead, will therefore be about one thing and one thing only: turnout. Even if the Brexit Party do relatively well, it will be about how many turnout in comparison to the locals and in comparison to the last EU elections. Whilst they might not admit the reality of things, ultimately all Labour and Conservatives really care about is securing the vote of people who will vote because voting intention doesn't win them seats if people don't turnout.

Has anyone else noticed that the trolls have had to go away for reprogramming since the local elections?

I miss those halcyon days of the early polls showing that Nigel Farage and the Brexit Party were winning the local elections.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/05/2019 16:18

Did everyone get this email from Remain Voter? I'm glad they're on the case:

Dear Remain voter,

The Tories and Labour are attempting to put a ludicrous spin on the local election result, saying it is a clear message that voters just want them to get on with Brexit.

How they came to that conclusion is a total mystery. The people have clearly voted against Brexit parties in favour of pro-Remain ones. The Lib Dems gained 703 council seats and the Greens gained 194 seats. A further 662 seats were won by independent councillors.

In stark contrast, the pro-Brexit parties suffered heavy losses. The Tories lost a staggering 1,334 seats, Labour lost 82 and UKIP were annihilated, losing 145 seats to leave them with a paltry 31 seats.

The message could not be clearer. Remainers do not support any sort of Brexit and we are making our voices heard.

Make Your Voice Heard

The next opportunity for us to speak up will be at the EU Elections on May 23rd. The problem is that there are just 73 MEP seats up for grabs and the lack of a Remain alliance means if we vote for our preferred Remain party (be it Lib Dem, Green, Change UK, SNP or Plaid Cymru) the chances are very few MEPs will be elected because the Remain vote is so split.

The latest UKGov poll shows Nigel Farage's Brexit party on 30 per cent of the vote. If you add up the Lib Dem, Green, Change UK, SNP and Plaid Cymru, their vote comes to 32 per cent.

This is why we set up Remain Voter - to help you vote tactically so that each region has the best chance of returning Remain MEPs to Brussels.

We only set up Remain Voter on April 14th out of sheer frustration that no-one else was offering us advice on tactical voting. Bear with us as we set up the mathematical model to produce an answer for each area of the UK.

Next Steps

We will not be doing a media launch until our systems are fully up and running. You are the first cohort - the people who stumbled across us in Twitter feeds and BTL Guardian comments. 20,000 of you have signed up and the number is growing every day. The more of us there are, the clearer our voice will be heard. Together we can be a forward motion for Remain.

We'll be in touch soon to ask about your voting history and future voting intentions.

Thanks for your support.

The Remain Voter team

'It's very, very clear,' thought Jeremy. 'If we allow a European Parliament vote in two week's time, we're going to be wiped out by the Lib Dems and Greens.'

'We need to do a deal,' thought Theresa. 'If we allow a European Parliament vote in two week's time, we're going to be wiped out by Farage and his Brexit nutters.'

And so a meeting was held and the mother of all fudges was agreed - selling UK industry, jobs and the futures of all the young UK voters down the river. The symbiotic parties of Labour and Conservative decided that no other parties should be allowed to disrupt their relationship, as to kill off one of them would simultaneously kill off the other.

BestIsWest · 05/05/2019 16:36

I’ve written to my Labour MP to say that while I regard her as excellent (she’s a strong Remainer) I will be voting for a Remain party in the EU elections unless Labour get off the fence. I’ve been a Labour member since the age of 18 and never voted for any other party before.

Plaid Cymru have my vote at the moment.

Also reported the vile tweet sent to Jess Phillips and glad to see that the perpetrator has now been banned. Eventually.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/05/2019 16:39

Any CON-LAB WA agreement is still v unlikely and is almost impossible to agree in time to avoid EP elections

PowerBadgersUnite · 05/05/2019 16:49

I think you are giving May and Corbyn far too much credit with that post Havananana. I don't believe for an instant they are smart or forwward thinking enough to make a deal that quickly, even to save their own necks.

I got the email too. And pmk.

BestIsWest · 05/05/2019 16:53

woman19 already signed too. Also furious.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/05/2019 16:59

Thanks Red

Iambuffy · 05/05/2019 17:15

Yeah I got that e mail too.

Iambuffy · 05/05/2019 17:19

It'll be lib dem or green for me.
Green did better in 2014 but that was then....we are through the looking glass now...

NoWordForFluffy · 05/05/2019 17:27

I am literally going to do what I'm told by Remain Voter, which is likely to be Green or Lib Dem, I imagine.

Mistigri · 05/05/2019 17:27

I thought of volunteering my modelling skills to remainvoter but work is crazy busy right now and they already seem to have some competent people. They have put some decent stuff on their site using tableau.

I have been off Facebook for a month, just reactivated my account and discover that two friends unexpectedly got elected as independents in the LE (both ex-Labour remainers, standing for a residents' group) while two friends who stood as Labour didn't get elected.

woman19 · 05/05/2019 17:37

best 👍

BackInTime · 05/05/2019 17:48

Also signed up to Remain Voter. Looking for some guidance on how to vote tactically. The idea of Farage & Co getting paid to enjoy a jolly time in Brussels and Strasbourg with no interest or intentions of being anything other than disruptive and difficult, just makes my blood boil.

Iambuffy · 05/05/2019 17:58

I'm going to do what I'm told too, which of course is totally unlike me...🤣

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/05/2019 18:07

I also signed up for Remain Voter when it was first mentioned on here. I've had the email and will see what they recommend.

OopNorfDahnSarf · 05/05/2019 18:16

Can the wise Westministenders shed some light on EU election voting? If my area has 8 seats, do I cast 8 votes or 1 vote?
If I cast 8 votes is it better to cast them for 1 party or spread them around the non Brexit parties?
Thanks

Littlespaces · 05/05/2019 18:18

For those in the SW.

Peregrina · 05/05/2019 18:19

You cast one vote, unless you are in NI, and I am sure you are not, because they don't have 8 seats there.

Icantreachthepretzels · 05/05/2019 18:20

It's just one vote you get so you can only vote for one party - and the candidates name won't be on the ballot. You just need to find out which is the best party to vote for in you area.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/05/2019 18:21

So, how do the parties decide which candidate/s are elected?
