Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

Well,Pregerina was asking about leavers in real life, frasersmummy, not on MN but don't let that stop you making the same old tired - and untrue - point.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/04/2019 10:27

Today's news is really worrying me. With France, Spain and Belgium ready for No Deal if we don't come up with anything new, it seems like we are coming to the end of the road.

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2019 10:27

We can leave at any time so the EU has washed its hands wrt keeping a check on it all and rightly so. It’s a good move

May yep needs to resolve it

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 06/04/2019 10:27

Sorry, Peregrina, don't know what happened to my spelling there! Grin

frasersmummy
Not true... posters here are critical not judgemental

Racists- not necessarily, often it's argued that some leavers are prejudiced and insecure, that's not the same

Stupid - no one says that, disengaged and naive however applies to some

Uneducated- no, never. In fact posters on here always highlight how varied leavers are in all area including education. You can have a PhD and not be well versed in EU matters

Not knowing what they were voting for- again no. Voters did know, the government doesn't. That's the trouble. The frustration here is also more about unintended consequences and a wish to see people take ownership of their decision because a vote for change carries with it more responsibility than a vote for the status quo. That's just logic.

CatsinSpace · 06/04/2019 10:31

Macron is merely posturing regarding refusing the extension. Anything to try to deflect his awful domestic situation and lack of popularity.
He will naturally back the extension. Merkel will have a quiet word with him.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 06/04/2019 10:31

We can leave at any time so the EU has washed its hands wrt keeping a check on it all and rightly so. It’s a good move

I want the long extension to go through but honestly, what does it say about us as a country now? Basically they're saying 'fgs we're just going to leave you to it, let us know when you're done but stop bothering us'. It's pretty appalling and humiliating in terms of what it says about us as a country, and what the EU now feels about us. We have squandered so much goodwill, which we will probably never regain Sad

I've never stuck my head above the parapet on these threads before but have been following them with interest.

I've found that in general, admitting to being a leaver on mumsnet just let's you in for a torrent of ignorant abuse about how racist and ignorant you are when they know nothing about you.

However, the westminstenders threads are different and people do seem prepared to engage in sensible debate and seek to understand the different perspectives that people have.

That being the case, I just want to thank the regular posters for helpful and interesting information and particularly RTB for giving the time to run them.

RevokeRemainohsodit · 06/04/2019 10:44

Since a significant quantity of food that the UK wants, from Spain, France and probably Italy comes through France, it pays not to be too rude

And that's exactly the reason they won't veto - because they want to keep exporting that food to us.

I don't blame Macron or France for this mess. He'll be gone soon enough but if we don't keep fighting we'll be out of the EU for decades.

prettybird · 06/04/2019 10:45

Looks like there's going to be a meet-up GrinWineGin

I really should be getting up but there's something stopping me Wink

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/04/2019 10:46

And that's exactly the reason they won't veto - because they want to keep exporting that food to us. and where else would we be getting it from instead?

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 06/04/2019 10:47

If people post racist or ignorant things they get called out on them.

Leavers who engage without being ignorant or racist are listened to and respected ime.

RevokeRemainohsodit · 06/04/2019 10:49

And I'm not being blase (sic) about the situation, I'm really quite scared of where our politicians will take us.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 06/04/2019 10:51

'Pride' in 'being British' has always struck me as a very odd concept. It's not an achievement, it's an accident of birth.

I love aspects of the country I was born in, and I understand that I'm lucky to have been born here. But, pride? Where does pride come into it?

Maud I agree. I’ve always felt exactly this. Mind you, as I’ve mentioned on a previous thread I’m now starting to feel embarrassment , veering towards shame and really that’s no more logical a feeling than pride.

Happy birthday prettybird 💐🍸🥂🍷🎂 step away from the mumsnet!

RevokeRemainohsodit · 06/04/2019 10:51

Lonely - are you bring deliberately obtuse? EU want to export food, we need to import it. Hence I doubt vetos will be used - for now.

HesterThrale · 06/04/2019 10:52

I agree MaudBailey we have squandered so much goodwill.

So if the EU did reject our request on Wednesday, how would Cooper’s No Deal bill stop us crashing out on Friday?

And how could we exert enough pressure on May to persuade her to write a Revoke letter on Thursday?

OublietteBravo · 06/04/2019 10:53

Leavers don't discuss brexit on mumsnet because the following words are applied to them regularly

Racist, stupid, uneducated, no idea what they voted for

I think the last of these is arguably true. Because it was simply impossible to know what ‘leave’ might look like in 2016 (it’s not like leave had a plan - they didn’t expect the result to go the way it did). There still isn’t any agreement on what ‘leave’ should look like. Plus it’s very difficult at this point in time for anyone to remember precisely what they voted for in 2016 without hindsight clouding their memory.

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/04/2019 10:53

I think we need to remember that although the timings of fresh food will be a massive issue for UK - not the EU so much other than increased costs and less reliability for timescales - it is the UK who needs FOOD > EU will just have to increase prices for their extra costs. UK purchaser will simply have to factor in their costs and increase our prices, or the supermarkets might do for a while until it becomes unprofitable. This is why I worry about the ASDA/Sainsbo merger - they are clearly anticipating US trade IMO.

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/04/2019 10:55

@Remain I could ask the same of you. Who do you think will blink first, the country with no food to eat or the countries with food and other places to trade?

Littlespaces · 06/04/2019 10:59

So if the EU did reject our request on Wednesday, how would Cooper’s No Deal bill stop us crashing out on Friday?

This is worrying me too. I don't know the answer to this question.

I also agree that nobody knew or knows what 'Leave' looks like as there are multiple versions.
