Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

And the Cambridge historian for brexit also very civilised!

ponyoponyo · 04/04/2019 19:55

Thank you RTB, these threads are my main source of information and wisdom. They are helping tether me to my last threads of sanity in all this brexit madness.

Littlespaces · 04/04/2019 19:58

Micheal Murpugo speaking for remain on channel 4 news, and speaking a lot of sense

Trouble is my family don't watch Channel 4 news. To a certain extent we all read and watch things that confirm our own opinions.

TalkinPaece · 04/04/2019 20:00

FlowerPlower
Absolutely.
Its why Led By Donkeys have been so effective
they say nothing, they just allow people to digest the words of others.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/04/2019 20:01

@red I hope your house move continues on schedule

You say all the storage warehouses for your furniture etc are full - how big a radius have you searched so far, out of interest ?

iirc, you are vaguely central England, so erverything should be reachable..... if you pay several hundred extra transport costsSad

dontcallmelen · 04/04/2019 20:02

Thanks Red & all the contributors, yy the Channel four news segment was very civilised.

RedToothBrush · 04/04/2019 20:04

We are looking around atm BCF. DH is now going on about moving everything in one go on the day. Which will send me over the edge. I don't think we can fit in a hire van. And professional removals are something we'd like to avoid especially since we are moving less than quarter of a mile. Hopefully something will turn up.

PMK with a cat....haven't caught up with the last thread but from Red's OP it doesn't seem like I missed much apart from Uri Gellar flooding the HoC obvs.

StripeyChina · 04/04/2019 20:08

PMK. Thanks, Red and all who help me (kind of) understand all this.

Flowerplower · 04/04/2019 20:08

Exactly TalkinPaece!!! I adore Led by Donkeys. Some Remainers though can be superior and smug and it really doesn't help our cause. www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=web&cd=&ved=0ahUKEwjY-pzojrfhAhUM2BoKHSXJDOUQzPwBCAM&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Fvoices%2Fletters%2Fbrexit-remain-leave-treating-like-six-years-old-theresa-may-decision-a8602761.html&psig=AOvVaw3Cfr_XHXPHBuzLYPoFhJE0&ust=1554490580790559

It isn't magic at all. But it's bothering to take the time for speaking to someone and listening to them, really focussing on what they're saying, mirroring their body language, sincerely agreeing with those parts of their arguments you can agree with, etc. Let them do most of the talking and then gently asking them their views on your worries about for example people who need medicine to survive, etc etc and listening to their responses. It takes a lot of time and patience but it can work I think on people who are willing to be persuaded.

Yes you can move on the day, make several journeys if need be
Just keep taking the Valium ...

Um, I'd fork out and let the professionals do this, if you can
Saving your sanity is priceless

Our 2 best hopes for extension support:

Dissident group threatens companies working for PSNI

A number of car recovery companies in Northern Ireland have been warned by dissident republicans that they will be targeted if they continue carrying out work for the police.

It is understood the threats have been issued by the group known as the so-called New IRA.

The PSNI has strongly condemned the threats and said they could jeopardise criminal investigations.

Recovery companies are often used by the police to remove vehicles seized as part of criminal investigations, as well as the scenes of serious accidents.

Fabian Zuleeg@FabianZuleeg (European Research Council, Brussels)

Once again UK debate completely ignores EU27 realities.

Granting long extension without clear purpose is far from foregone conclusion.

EU27 require to see real plan on how impasse on UK side will be resolved.

EP elections = real political & legal hurdle.

WA necessary in any case

67chevvyimpala · 04/04/2019 20:21

red
We moved ourselves (4 miles) twice in 4 months (don't ask!!....)
It was hard work. We had 3 other people with cars helping us too.
Very tiring!

lonelyplanetmum · 04/04/2019 20:24

Oh Red thanks but ...

Look all I did was do the school run, homework, cook supper and watch a film with DD. The lady thread has finished and we are 50 posts into a new thread. I can't keep up!

RedToothBrush · 04/04/2019 20:24

BCF we can't do it in multiple trips as we might not get the keys for the new place before we are out of the old. In theory since where we are going to us empty they might be kind to us, but its generally not normal practice. We might have to be really nice to the developer. He's also local so it might work in our favour.

a miserable pmk.

lonelyplanetmum · 04/04/2019 20:29

Probably a good job I can't keep up it insulates me from the inevitable.
