Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

PMK

I'm due to have a tour of parliament on Monday - holding my breath that they don't cancel due to the leak!

Thanks Red for your time, commitment and wisdom. I'm so grateful for this thread having posted occasionally at the start then lurked, then got to the point of I need to talk to someone about this without alienating my friends Shock

Ahem. If the leak is unfixed by Monday, what then? And on the last thread I think it was woman19 who said the video attached to the Guardian article was 'fake news' - why do you think that?

Pmk I’ve not looked at anything today feels fruitless and depressing

BigChocFrenzy · 04/04/2019 19:45

Thanks, red 💐

Dangerous times indeed
We will depend, as with the 29 March deadline, on the EU rescuing us from our self-made catastrophe

Unfortunately, at this stage, extension would risky for them, economically & politically
So unless May puts forward a feasible plan, one or more countries could veto a further extension.

I read that Macron in particular wants Brexit off the table and Brits out, so he can push his plans to develop the EU

  • and calm French public discontent -
without the Brits blocking progress and taking up so much time with Brexit

Of course, Brexit means years of negotiation afterwards, but that would be by Barnier's successors, with little time required from E27 leaders.

CosmicVagina · 04/04/2019 19:47

Thank you for the threads and explanations Red and All.

Flowerplower · 04/04/2019 19:47

Pmk. What worries me about a PV/CV is that we still aren't prepared against the propaganda campaign the leavers won with the last time around.

Tangentially related - my work involves persuading and influencing people to come around to my way of thinking and I've had to take a number of training courses on how to do this. Some of the techniques I learned include making sure the person you are speaking with feels really listened to when they express their concerns, never telling them they're wrong or making them feel stupid, and asking them leading questions instead of arguing them into submission. I've used these techniques to persuade three leavers I know to switch to remain. Ok it isn't many but it's a start! I am thinking there will be plenty of leavers out there who are just desperate for an opportunity to switch sides that would enable them to save face and not have to admit they're wrong. If we can talk to them and gently nudge them in that direction, maybe we can make a difference? But the number one thing we on the remain side have to do is stop telling leavers they're stupid because that w/o just cause them to dig their heels in further.

Littlespaces · 04/04/2019 19:48

Shame we can't do a swift exchange with the arch Brexiteers.

HS2 gets dropped and we flush Brexit down the toilet.

That's very interesting flower and it is using legitimate ways to persuade people
unlike the psy-ops that CA and others used in the 2016 ref

Please come and work your magic.

bellinisurge · 04/04/2019 19:50

Thank you Red. Between these threads and the Brexitcast podcasts, I'm just about keeping track of what the hell is going on.

AutumnCrow · 04/04/2019 19:52

Thank you for the threads, Red.

HazardGhost · 04/04/2019 19:54

Were you lot going round calling leavers stupid before the last ref instead of treating them like people? No wonder we lost...

Whatthefoxgoingon · 04/04/2019 19:54

Micheal Murpugo speaking for remain on channel 4 news, and speaking a lot of sense.

yolofish · 04/04/2019 19:54

thank you red and everyone else who contributes. These threads are my first port of call to find out what is actually going on. Wine
