Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

Thanks for the birthday greetings. I'm having a nice slow start with tea in bed (made by dh) and will be getting up shortly to have a good fry up (eggs, bacon, square sausage and tattie scone) with lovely South African bubbly Wine, before making an Othello cake (Danish speciality and very yummy cake) for my birthday afternoon tea Cake (how very middle class Wink) and then going out for a meal Smile

Just been interrupted to go and watch one of the cats escorting a mangy fox around the back garden and off the premises! ShockConfused

Peregrina · 06/04/2019 10:00

The passports issue did make the BBC news.
Honestly though - they can't decide what to do or which date they want to leave on, but can make that sort of change.

Still, hang onto your burgundy passport which doesn't say EU because you might find that they become quite rare.

Happy birthday prettybird 💐🍹

prettybird · 06/04/2019 10:03

Welcome CrunchyCarrot Flowers

My name is prettybird and I am a Brexaholic Halo. I watch far too much Sky News and BBC Parliament and spend far too much time on the Westministender threads Blush

'Pride' in 'being British' has always struck me as a very odd concept. It's not an achievement, it's an accident of birth.

I love aspects of the country I was born in, and I understand that I'm lucky to have been born here. But, pride? Where does pride come into it?

woman19 · 06/04/2019 10:05

Has anyone had to renew their plastic card british driving licences recently? A friend did and it was returned with no EU flag on it, just the british one. Sad

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 06/04/2019 10:07

songsofexperience I agree with your post re Macron. I would be utterly devastated by his veto but I've said for a long time that I wouldn't blame France, in particular, in the slightest for invoking it. And as I've said before, I believe if the boot was on the other foot we (by which I mean the current UK govt) would have no problem in doing the same. We have fucked them around for far too long.

HazardGhost · 06/04/2019 10:07

Happy birthday prettybird looking forward to living in your garden in years to come 😁

Still not awake properly yet (I'm very tired!) But just wanted to add I know a leaver who likes Putin... I was Confused I think she gets her news via Facebook because she comes out with lots of Confused
She's a fan of ukip, I explained I know a few ukippers well and she said the ones I know were the exception and the rest of them are for the people. Anyway apparrently Putin is loved by his people because he's for his people , ukip is for the people and Jeremy Corbyn is for the people.

I'm not saying she's been brainwashed but I am not saying she hasn't been either Grin

Songsofexperience · 06/04/2019 10:07

Isn't there also something about no longer having license plates with the EU flag on them?

prettybird · 06/04/2019 10:09

Didn't Macron say to let the UK blame France as they would anyway? Hmm

Seems that that it is true, judging by RemainRevoke's post Confused

Peregrina · 06/04/2019 10:11

DD renewed her driving licence a few weeks ago - I am not sure exactly when but since the end of February, and that came back with the EU flag on it. No doubt it's the same story, they are using up old stock.

I rarely swear, but they are so bloody silly - messing around with trivia when there are serious issues to be sorted out.

Songsofexperience · 06/04/2019 10:11

I think he did say that prettybird and yes my heart sank when I heard it.

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/04/2019 10:11

Brucies Brexit Bonus fails to materialise in Cornwall and we've not even reached the end of the conveyor belt yet...

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2019 10:13

Happy birthday, pretty 💐🎂

Peregrina · 06/04/2019 10:13

Am I alone in noticing that Leavers I know, or know of, all absolutely refuse to discuss Brexit? Why if it's so wonderful?

Songsofexperience · 06/04/2019 10:14

My DS is a student in Scotland (like I was 😊) and loves every minute of it.
I will probably join Hazard in your garden. Cats love me 😊

Songsofexperience · 06/04/2019 10:15

(Last post was for prettybird)

HesterThrale · 06/04/2019 10:17

So let me get this straight...

May has requested till 30 June. (The EU has previously rejected that date.) No progress has been made at cross-party talks, which was the carrot that May was going to dangle in front of Junker as evidence of trying.

And on Wednesday at the EU Summit, if one country, e.g. France, (somewhat understandably) vetoes our request for this extension, we are out on Friday - No Deal.

Is that right? Bl*y hell. Talk about taking it to the wire. But this time the EU may get fed up with our interminable assumptions about our own importance and actually do it.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2019 10:17

RevokeRemain "Macron .... obnoxious prick....he'll do what Merkel tell him. " Angry

Please dump this Brexiter myth that other countries - especially the #2 power, France, do what Germany tells them

It's untrue, very insulting to both Germany & the EU and is usually only trotted out by the most ignotant Brexiters

It's partly what led to this mess - Brexiters thinking that Germany will save us, because cars .....

Germany with the largest EU population & economy naturally has more influence than any other,
but for historical reasons they shy away from trying to dominate EU policy ^
and they work by building consensus with soft power.

Like all other EU members, Germany will prioritise existing members over the UK
So if consensus & EU interests / risk avoidance means agreeing no extension, that's what will happen
If the EU as a whole think they'll benefit slightly more from an extension, then we'll get one.

Macron is NOT an "obnoxious prick"
He now thinks that keeping a disfunctional UK within the EU may be too risky - all other EU leaders are worriêd about this too

He is a centrist who defeated the far left & far right in an election
and before he came along, the chances of a populist French govt were much higher
President Le Pen would have been dreadful

He can't appear weak, or expend political capital on yet another chance that May would probably waste anyway

  • he will vote for what is in the best interests of France and the EU.
That's his job
MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 06/04/2019 10:18

Happy birthday prettybird. Save some of that cake and put the kettle on for all of your Westminstenders refugees Wink

prettybird · 06/04/2019 10:19

My downstairs' neighbours have a sticker in their window saying "Refugees Welcome" so I'm sure they'll open up their "half" of the garden too! Grin ....and they have a dog for the dog lovers Wink

LonelyTiredandLow · 06/04/2019 10:22

I'm another who is confident that if any other EU country had tried to pull this shit we would have vetoed extensions and been sticking the boot in by now. I don't blame EU countries for this at all. Yes, EU isn't perfect but frankly a beacon of hope in comparison to the UK and the direction we are heading in right now.

Not sure that i've seen this article posted on here yet by Otto English? I have missed chunks of threads over the last few days but this ties in with leavers needing a ladder to climb down...

frasersmummy · 06/04/2019 10:22

Leavers don't discuss brexit on mumsnet because the following words are applied to them regularly

Racist, stupid, uneducated, no idea what they voted for

Songsofexperience · 06/04/2019 10:23

And could we have a ceilidh in the garden please? Haven't been to one in ages!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2019 10:25

Who to blame if we crash out ?

May has reportedly not made any concessions in talks with Labour
Her idea of talks was that they should accept what a Tory PM orders^

She STILL has no plan of what she woulod use any extension for, other than more of the same

She has STILL not made the Order in Council for EP elections

  • she needs to do so by EOB 9 April, before the EU COuncil meeeting on 10 April

She has requested an extension until 30 June, which was refused the last time
So she obviously expects the EU to choose a different extension, for which she can blame them

Who to blame if we crash out ?
Not Macron
Not Merkel

The EU didn't eat her homework - she never did any
