Brexit

John Bercow has stepped in. We've long made the point, that the position of Speaker was utterly crucial to the outcome of Brexit. However this ruling was long warned as a possibility. It was somewhat overlooked by all (including me).

We are now faced with the bizarre narrative that May was just about to be able to get her deal through, and it's now simply Bercow who has tried to sabotage Brexit.

The reality is that his ruling has the effect of making BOTH no deal And a lengthy extension (possibly with a PV) much more likely.

May now has to embrace one of these option (by accident or design) or find a way to substantially change the terms of her deal as put to the Commons, either through negotiation with the EU or bolting something significantly different to her deal like a variation of the Kyle Amendment (a PV based on her deal or remain). Or find a majority to overturn the standing order that Bercow has cited as the reason for his block.

This block also might apply to the Benn amendment (indicative votes) or other PV amendments. Which could equally be problematic going forward.

In reality Bercow has upped the stakes and forced May to do something meaningful rather than simply holding a gun to MPs heads to vote. Hurrah for parliamentary Sovereignty and limiting the abuse of power of the executive!?!

It's a completely neutral move in practice. The HoC has tied itself in knots with how it's voted for political reason rather than for the national interest. The British Constitution has just stood up for itself. Bercow is just a useful target to blame for the incompetence of the entire house for the last 3 years.

The billion pound question this morning is where does that now leave us?

The honest answer is I'm damned if I know.

Maybe the EU will come up with a magic bullet for May, maybe the Cabinet can come up with a magic bullet, maybe May will take the political magic bullet of a long extension or revocation or maybe we'll just all shoot ourselves in the head and foot with no deal.

I have no idea.

10 days to go.

Thank you again Red.

StarThanks for Red

See you at the march. Might as well wander the streets of London. Why not- nothing to lose!

"Lets all take May by the hand and lead her through the streets of London. I'll show you something to make you change your mind…"

onalongsabbatical · 19/03/2019 10:03

I don't post much - I read a lot of these threads and I'm in awe of everyone's erudition. But I'll say this - today I really, really, almost for the first time, dare to believe that we are going to stay in the EU. I think we'll get a long extension in order to have either a GE or a PV and we're going to win it and stay in.
Hallelujah. I might go crack open a jar of chutney from the garage...Grin don't want to get too excited.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/03/2019 10:05

Thanks, red 💐

Clever title 😂

afaik, changing the Brexit date, as the EU have offered, would be enough to satisfy Erkine May - it's why they offered so early

Don’t eat your stash yet onalong it might still be needed. GrinSad

PMK, I’m desperately hoping we somehow remain in the EU after this farce. But will they still want us?

"Kate Hoey, can you name any reputable independent study that show us better off if we leave?"

Kate Hoey:
"Um, probably not better off as such..." Angry

< for her - like her DUP chums - it's probably all about trying to kill off the GFA.
She voted against extension, btw >

So you are Ralph!

SparklySneakers · 19/03/2019 10:12

Thanks red

BigChocFrenzy · 19/03/2019 10:13

adequatefood We'd have to work hard at rebuilding bridges and our reputation, both within the EU and RoW
There is still goodwill within the EU if we did that

Sadly atm I expect if we Revoke, the govt will work off its humiliation by openly trying to wreck the EU from the inside.

We might even find ourselves on the naughty step with Hungary, facing an Article 7 suspension

As long as we have an unelectable Labour leader, the Tories will continue their shameless populism,
to distract from the total mess they've made of the country, not just Brexit

SparklySneakers · 19/03/2019 10:14

My mum and I have dreadful gastric issues today. Brexititis.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 19/03/2019 10:15

I can't fathom what the hell will happen next.

I don't know whether to boost my stockpile or eat it!

I just want to know what's going on now, I've had enough of all the uncertainty. And when it's all over I need someone to be able to vote for in a GE. Maybe the TIGgers, the rest of them in the HOC want flushing into the sewers along with my Brexit loo roll stash.

lonelyplanetmum · 19/03/2019 10:15

LeClerc I think Ralph's probably the reason my 10 year old mind decided to give London a try one day!

1tisILeClerc · 19/03/2019 10:18

{PMK, I’m desperately hoping we somehow remain in the EU after this farce. But will they still want us?}
The 'triumphalism of the MSM and dickheads will be unbearable 'We beat the EU' continuing indefinately which would be very damaging. The presence of (probably ) Euroskeptic MEPs in the EP who will deliberately cause as much discord as possible at a time when there are some massive issues, way beyond Brexit is potentially very dangerous.
The UK is claiming it is 'hard enough' to take on the world, now is a good time to prove it.

Sadly most UK cities would 'prove' Ralph's point. Who would have thought it of the world's 5/6th economy?
Actually it highlights the continued failure of the UK governments as that is an old song.

As you know I agree about the successive failure of UK governments to address poverty. I think loneliness overlaps but is different though. Despite my username I'm not lonely in London.
But I do think that song captures urban loneliness which seems worse for climate and cultural related reasons in the Northern hemisphere. It's hard for governments to address I think.

General election next do you think? With a Lib Dem/UKIP resurgence?
