John Bercow has stepped in. We've long made the point, that the position of Speaker was utterly crucial to the outcome of Brexit. However this ruling was long warned as a possibility. It was somewhat overlooked by all (including me).

We are now faced with the bizarre narrative that May was just about to be able to get her deal through, and it's now simply Bercow who has tried to sabotage Brexit.

The reality is that his ruling has the effect of making BOTH no deal And a lengthy extension (possibly with a PV) much more likely.

May now has to embrace one of these option (by accident or design) or find a way to substantially change the terms of her deal as put to the Commons, either through negotiation with the EU or bolting something significantly different to her deal like a variation of the Kyle Amendment (a PV based on her deal or remain). Or find a majority to overturn the standing order that Bercow has cited as the reason for his block.

This block also might apply to the Benn amendment (indicative votes) or other PV amendments. Which could equally be problematic going forward.

In reality Bercow has upped the stakes and forced May to do something meaningful rather than simply holding a gun to MPs heads to vote. Hurrah for parliamentary Sovereignty and limiting the abuse of power of the executive!?!

It's a completely neutral move in practice. The HoC has tied itself in knots with how it's voted for political reason rather than for the national interest. The British Constitution has just stood up for itself. Bercow is just a useful target to blame for the incompetence of the entire house for the last 3 years.

The billion pound question this morning is where does that now leave us?

The honest answer is I'm damned if I know.

Maybe the EU will come up with a magic bullet for May, maybe the Cabinet can come up with a magic bullet, maybe May will take the political magic bullet of a long extension or revocation or maybe we'll just all shoot ourselves in the head and foot with no deal.

I have no idea.

10 days to go.

Lonely
I had not associated poverty with anything you have previously said. Having been to countries where the people are incredibly poor, their 'happiness does not depend on 'wealth' alone and they can be 'happy' having food for the day and a reasonable chance of food for the next few days.

Much indebted to you Red. I can't believe we've ended up here Confused

QueenMabby · 19/03/2019 10:44

PMK. Thanks Red. Epic title.
My Brexit stash is still untouched but I’ve totally run out of popcorn after last week’s shenanigans. 😂

Problems with general elections:
-Affordability
-Difficulty of writing a manifesto that makes sense on Brexit

Thanks Red. Nice pic of old Ersk Grin

I've nothing to say about actual Brexit any more. It's so beyond The Thick of It/The Death of Stalin I can no longer either think of any jokes about it or how to discuss it seriously.

Curiously today - first time since 2017 - we had a letter from our MP addressed to us all (so taken from the electoral roll ...). Ostensibly about our local library (which DW can't use since some pond scum vandalised the wheelchair lift). However the sudden raised prominence is interesting timing. Is it (a) coincidence (b) a manifestation of something brewing "at top", or (c) a personal/local initiative based on local feedback ?

I wonder if there's a sense, suggestion, acceptance or realisation that whatever the outcome of the next few days/weeks/months, the country will not be able to resume functioning again until "Brexit" in whatever form it ends up in is validated by the electorate at a General Election ?

That's a question not an assertion ....

I love Confused the idea from Kate Hoey of not being better off as such. I'm permanently in a state of not being better off as such. And have been for over 50 years.Wink

I have the day off work so I can drill stuff. I wonder if it will help.

Something from the Guardian, so may have already been widely spread. Interesting link to what I think of as the primary issue. It seems like everyone who wants to leave, has a different version of leave in their mind - but thinks that everyone else supports their vision...

@DG have you got local elections coming up in May? If so you'll start hearing from your MP more, supporting their local candidates.

That's not to say I don't think an election is in the brewing. Sadly I think the outcome will just reaffirm how divided the country is.

DGRossetti · 19/03/2019 11:34

@DG have you got local elections coming up in May?

No. Although yesterday our local (Tory) councillors decided to put out their usual tatty "aren't Labour shit" communique (I deliberately use a French word to cause them psychic pain Grin) .

NoWordForFluffy · 19/03/2019 11:36

PMK.

Thanks, Red.

Bearing in mind it's almost lunch time, why the buggery haven't we heard anything yet?

If the extension supposedly proffered by the EU is enough to substantively alter the WA, why hasn't it been submitted again this morning for voting on tonight? The government is an utter shower of shit right now.

EweSurname · 19/03/2019 11:37

Are there any indications whether there are enough MPs would would vote to move the speaker's ruling on Erskine May?

MrPan · 19/03/2019 11:39

Long extension, ditch that liability Corbyn for a front bencher actually electable, and win the inevitable GE, and stay in!!

ContinuityError · 19/03/2019 11:50

Just done a very Brexity YouGov survey - lots of questions about what I would consider still honours the referendum result (SM+CU, retaining FoM etc), how I would vote in a PV, what I think will happen on March 29th.

Is this a standard issue one, or has someone commissioned something?

Holidayshopping · 19/03/2019 11:53

Long extension, ditch that liability Corbyn for a front bencher actually electable, and win the inevitable GE, and stay in!!

That would suit me!

Do we think there will be any news of note today?

Is the HoC sitting to discuss next steps today or is TM holed up in a room lobbing tenners at the DUP?

Sostenueto · 19/03/2019 11:54

Thanks red love the title!Flowers

HazardGhost · 19/03/2019 11:55

Ta red

Several cups of coffee down and I'm mildly more awake.

I kinda not surprised we're ten days to go and gov is clueless.

Sat through as much of the human medication regulation 2019 motion as I could last night. Current shortages were discussed, official line is waffle/silience from gov, however a Labour MP and health sec for SNP states the obvious truth that the stockpiling is causing shortages.

Was very heartened that an MP made a point about methadone patients as well, addicts have been kicked under the rug with no rehab for to long now. It was nice to see an MP actively try to represent methadone users needs.

Also the few mps present raised the point that we're meant to be patient centred and the powers at be are not behaving patient centred. This has been happening for so long now I assumed everyone had forgotten Confused

Anyway my crush on the SNP has grown and it was refreshing to see a handful of cross party MPs behaving thoughtfully.
