This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

What sort of tinned meat or meat meals have people got?
I'm guessing that most meat eaters go for fresh or frozen and tinned meat or meat meals is less usual but might find its way in your supplies to save freezer space.
On a trip to M&S I saw some tinned chicken in white sauce for £3.50 a tin and decided I'd be better off with soya chunks and a homemade tomato sauce.
I am partial to corned beef but that's 'cos I am old. Grin
Anyone got a gem to share?

rosie39forever · 20/02/2019 20:06

M&S tinned ham, chicken and turkey are actually pretty decent and are fine for sandwiches and salads I often keep a couple in the cupboard, they are quite often on 3for2 or buy one get one half price. We've had the ham with new potatoes, veg and parsley sauce for a quick easy meal on more than one occasion and it's lovely.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2019 20:26

Thanks for the new thread!

I have shampoo and conditioner coming any minute now from Ocado. And yet more tuna to add to the stash. The kids eat loads of tuna, so it's good to have a dead cert option in plentiful supply!

I love corned beef, but I may be alone in that one. 😂

My first crops of the year - leeks - are growing well too, which I'm pleased about. Not that there'll be ready for ages. They're a long haul veg!

I keep thinking about more stuff I could be stockpiling. There's got to be limits though!

ValleyoftheHorses · 20/02/2019 20:27

Tinned fish is nicer than tinned meat- we have tuna, anchovies, mackerel and crab. Need to get some sardines.
Meat - we only have corned beef and hot dog sausages. We quite like corned beef and DS will eat hot dog sausages- maybe cut up in pasta?
Also soups like Heinz big soup in beef and vegetable.
I’d probably rather have a tinned spinach and chick pea curry or a lentil Dahl. I have a fair amount of frozen meat meals etc though.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2019 20:34

I've got normal Heinz soup coming tonight. It's 2 x 4 tins for £5.00, which isn't too bad.

I think I need a load more bread flour. I'm going to make my bigger loaf at the weekend and see if I can tempt the kids to eat it!

Onescaredmuma · 20/02/2019 21:28

The M&S Tinned chicken in white sauce is worth every penny its amazing!! I don't get it very often but think I might treat myself to a couple of brexit tins haven't had any in well over a year. Does anywhere sell Tinned chicken or turkey (I don't eat red meat) that isn't in sauce that I could use in sandwiches and what part of the supermarket would they be in I've been looking for a while in Tesco and aldi but can't seem to find anything.

rosie39forever · 20/02/2019 21:47

M&S

Onescaredmuma · 20/02/2019 22:34

Damn I'd hoped there would be somewhere cheaper doing some, I might have to pick up a couple although it might be better to just pick up extra frozen chicken packs.

Wolfcub · 20/02/2019 22:48

I was disappointed in M&S today. The tinned curry size appears to have reduced and the price increased quite a bit since I last bought some

SalrycLuxx · 21/02/2019 07:45

We’ve got sardines, tuna, salmon and corned beef. Don’t like other tinned meat I’m afraid.

redhat · 21/02/2019 07:54

I’ve been buying packets of ham instead. They’re very thin so can be slid into small gaps in the freezer. Far more likely to be eaten.

I do have a few tins of ham but the idea with those is to chop and use in pasta bakes or on pizza rather than in sandwiches.

You can buy shelf stable pate in the world foods sections

SalrycLuxx · 21/02/2019 08:19

On water purification m from today’s guardian:

“the government has leased ferries on six new port routes, medicines and chemicals for water purification will get priority over food”

I actually didn’t think clean water would be an issue.

redhat · 21/02/2019 08:21

The chemicals for water purification have a short shelf life and water is obviously much more important to us than food. Watch this space for serious usage restrictions...

For anyone who doesn't have any, you can buy 100 water purification tablets for about £2 on amazon

Time to get freezing cheese! We are veggie so beef prices are of no concern to us. I can see more people turning veggie.

So a company has already exploited the situation. £295!!! I wonder what else is in the box...

I've been thinking about water purification tablets but living in a city I'm not sure where I'd get water from? There's a river nearby but not really accessible due to the banks being deep.

I've no room to store a lot of bottled water. Any suggestions?

@SparklySneakers People selling survival boxes give me the rage. One or two good bits but usually rammed full of expensive and poor quality stuff.
@Batsypatsy in the very unlikely event that water is a problem with Brexit, have a bucket to collect rain or whatever, filter it through an old T-shirt to get out the big bits and you have four options for purification after that:

  1. Rolling boil for 1 minute OR
  2. Water purification tablets (cheap on Amazon) OR
  3. 2-3 drops of thin bleach per litre (depends on the strength of bleach - look it up and check the bottle) OR
  4. Buy a lifestraw (expensive on Amazon at about £25 each?)
