This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

I felt sorry for the blokes wife, the last two were odd, almost as if they were paid to say what they did.

Graphista · 21/02/2019 20:50

Well just discovered I'm a crap prepper Grin

Just gone to have a late dinner - Quorn "shepherds" pie and baked beans - only I've NO plain baked beans - by plain I mean with nothing else in, dd and I like the kind with sausages in (veggie for me pork for her) for glasgow frys at weekends

Need to stock up!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2019 21:15

I've spent the day with some friends who live literally hand to mouth today.
I now feel awful about what I've put aside. Like a total tosser.

SalrycLuxx · 21/02/2019 21:28

Your stocks will ensure there’s something left I. The shop for them. Better than fighting with them over the affordable food.

And you could provide a care package if you wanted should it be needed.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/02/2019 21:29

That's really sad, OYBBK. It's tough, because on one hand you can't be responsible for others and on the other, you're a compassionate human being.

I've not been approached about stock piling. I'd give short shrift to anyone who did approach me!

bluechameleon · 21/02/2019 21:50

I haven't done anything about water, now I'm wondering if I should. I glanced at the tinned meat in M&S and was horrified at the price - is it genuinely nice or just nice for something tinned? We've just had a new M&S Foodhall open near me so I might go and have a good look next week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2019 22:17

Life is so so so bloody unfair isn't it though. They did without food today to feed me as I was their guest. I want to rage against this (sorry)

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 23:08

That is really shit OYBBK.

Epanoui · 21/02/2019 23:30

Could you put together a small pack of essentials for them in case it all goes to shit, OYBBK? Not sure what the circumstances are or if they would accept but you could make up a little hamper of things that are nice and would last - maybe send as a thank you for their hospitality today. I know it doesn't do anything about the essential injustice and awfulness of people being in that situation but perhaps a small thing you could do to help later on.

Graphista · 22/02/2019 00:26

OYBBK what are their circumstances? If we knew perhaps we could suggest some places you could signpost them to for help?

You could also set aside a box for them if you could afford to?

Moorfields · 22/02/2019 06:10

I've lurked on the brexit & prepper boards for a few months now but 1st time I've posted. I'd like to thank everyone for the wonderful advice & information given & for the community spirit. It's a shit situation we're in but all we can do is prepare to make the best of it & stay out of the shops for a while post brexit.

Re powdered milk, if you want to avoid buying Nestle Nido then try Arla Dano. I've usually found Dano in Asian food shops as it's a brand commonly used on the subcontinent. It's made from whole milk so it's another alternative to Nido.

re toilet rolls I've bought 50 rolls for £14 from groupon so it's worth looking there.

I'm almost done, just waiting for next payday. If you're near a farmfoods then they've got some real bargains particularly in household goods/laundry.

Moorfields · 22/02/2019 06:12

60 rolls for £14 not 50, sorry typo!

Moorfields · 22/02/2019 06:22

I've separated my stash & I'm keeping my kitchen cupboards stocked at a bare minimum to avoid attention. I'm using suitcases to store my extra shopping as we're holidaying in the UK so won't need the huge cases.

I've encouraged my family to buy extra as there a few young kids & elderly people involved. My mum's been buying extra & even my pro brexit bil & that was unexpected.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2019 07:53

I can't say very much on here I'm afraid Graphista, they are in touch with different organisations. It's difficult.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2019 08:05

You know, I think I will put together a little something for them, thank you :)
I wish I'd taken a cake or something yesterday. Bugger.

Cloudtree · 22/02/2019 08:10

You could always leave something for them anonymously OYBBK if you feel they wouldn't want to accept help - or even send them a small internet delivery. If they're struggling so much that they went without food to feed you then large bags of rice and pasta could make a massive difference to them. If you're focusing on basics you can get a lot for £25 or so.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2019 08:13

That is true :)

SparklySneakers · 22/02/2019 08:27

Morning all.
That's a lovely idea OYBBK.
So many people struggle now and a no deal brexit will be horrendous for them.
Food banks will be under huge pressure and I imagine referrals will increase massively.
I'm getting in extra for my mum as she can't afford to get much.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/02/2019 09:10

Do you think you could have an online shop of rice, pasta, chopped tomatoes etc sent to them, OYBBK? What a terrible situation to be in. But if you can somehow get a 'basics' package to them that would go a long way towards helping, hopefully.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/02/2019 10:23

Morning. Got to hoover out Brexit not cupboard number 5 today. And I am sitting here doing stuff all.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2019 10:36

I'll see what I can do. It would help them for the moment at least.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 22/02/2019 11:57

When times were tough I gratefully accepted rice, beans, pasta from a friend who was 'tidying her cupboards' and had 'more than she had room for'.
But you would know if that approach would be likely to work.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2019 13:18

I wish I could say more about the situation.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/02/2019 13:21

We can surmise.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2019 13:55

yeah.

After talking to someone this morning with vastly more money than us, who bemoans austerity and the UKs anti immigration hostility but actually does nothing at all to relieve or campaign against it, I don't feel quite so terrible. At least I know that I do both. and will keep doing so.

In other news dds water purification tablets arrived. I sent her a message asking her to buy a cheap 1l bottle of water. She sent back a picture of a very fancy looking kilner bottle that shed already bought from poundland.
