This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

Cupboards a nicely stocked. Only problem is the kids found the crisps, popcorn, sweets, scoffed the lot, and stuffed marshmellow into one the bottles of golden syrup, and painted the walls, mirror and doors with conditioner, sprayed all my hair spray conditioner and wasted that, threw toys everywhere and clean clothes. Their bed covered in golden syrup and there's me thinking they being sweet letting me sleep an extra hour. :/ Not a happy bunny. They aren't either as they have been told no treats for rest of the month and have to spend the day cleaning up the mess.

Still need to get curry powder, sweet chilli sauce, shower gel, pepper, can some chicken, fill freezer, get some more cheese and make some more powdered cheese. Oh and maybe the treats.

Currently dehydrating my first batch of powered egg
Also working on the garden, tomatoe seedlings already up. Going sew rest of peppers and aubergines today

wildchild554 · 22/02/2019 14:45

also now have a sawyer water filtration device which will do use the rest of our lives probably for £20 worth it and doesn't take up room. Also ready for the next times we end up with water contamination, which seems to be yearly. :)

Crayolaaa · 22/02/2019 14:48

Just ordered extra cat food from zooplus and have a brexit basket ready to checkout on Asda.
Please could someone link to the cheapy water purification tabs?

Graphista · 22/02/2019 20:11

"sweet chilli sauce" oh thanks for that! Just had to throw out last bottle as was out of date and only about 1/5 full adding to shopping list

NoWordForFluffy · 22/02/2019 20:37

I make my own chilli jam which we have a little stock of, so I'm fine on that front!

wildchild554 · 22/02/2019 21:09

@Graphista Nooooooo! sweet chilli lasts well past it sell by date. Please tell me you haven't chucked it yet?

wildchild554 · 22/02/2019 21:10

don't forget bbe dates are for guidance only and last well past that

Graphista · 22/02/2019 21:13

Wildchild - couldn't open the bottle it was too sticky and messy and smelled odd too plus about a year out of date

wildchild554 · 22/02/2019 22:13

:')

wildchild554 · 22/02/2019 22:17

ok fair enough lol just don't go by dates though on them check for funkiness, for instance currently using spicy chipotle sauce bbe oct 2017 and still great ;) have eaten older too :')

yolofish · 22/02/2019 22:32

had brainwave today: make sure we have enough dishwasher tablets/rinseaid/salt etc. OK, that's assuming we hve electricity of course, but if we do and we have to grapple the brexiteer zombies for the last can of whatever, would be good if the dishwasher worked? Also got some breadmixes in the other day - I know I could make it myself with flour etc, but it should see us through. Our chickens all went to the foxy kitchen in the sky last summer and we've held off getting more (house/run needs work, DH ill, blah blah) but seriously considering getting some more now as at least then we could guarantee egg supply!

Cloudtree · 23/02/2019 07:36

Our chickens are a big part of my food plan. 6-8 eggs a day makes a massive difference. It does however rely on having sufficient chicken feed. That's why eggs were rationed in the war - not enough feed.

I have five bags of feed stacked in the garage. Fortunately mine have lots of space to free range which also helps.

TipseyTorvey · 23/02/2019 07:40

I think I'm fairly well food prepped now thanks to these threads but although I have the water purification tablets I am unclear why the water supply would stop? I've lived in countries where the water supply was rationed but that was down to drought. Is there any reason to think brexit would cause any issues that I'm not thinking of? I've only got in a dozen small water bottles so far...

bellinisurge · 23/02/2019 07:56

I also doubt water supply will be an issue. There has been concern about purification chemicals which , on a large scale , apparently cannot really be stockpiled and stay viable. These are imported.

  1. I imagine that there are plans to fly them in for purification of the water supply via the grid if we get really desperate.
  2. I think a lot of posters on here have been surprised at how cheap purification tablets are on Amazon , having looked at them following a train of thought. So they get mentioned a bit.
TipseyTorvey · 23/02/2019 08:12

Thanks oh wise one Bellinisurge 😊 (I've taken quite a lot of your advice so far!) . I suppose there's a whole science to purifying water I haven't a clue about. We did used to have a water butt somewhere in my ridiculously overgrown garden, I might go and see if it's still usable...

bellinisurge · 23/02/2019 08:23

Water butt is a good idea generally. I'm actually only just getting around to getting one in the next week or two and have "butt envy"if you already have one Grin. Even if it needs a bit of work.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2019 08:25

And water can be purified by a hard boil for a minute. run is through a T-shirt first to get out any big bits. I'm guessing United Utilities in my area does something a bit more sophisticated, though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2019 08:28

I have three Grin
It would take a lot before I'd consider drinking from them though. yuk.

Cloudtree · 23/02/2019 09:09

Agreed. I also have three but it would be a last resort.

Fortunately we get a lot of rain in this country so running out of water is generally not an issue. The imminent potential issue is the purification chemicals but the government has said they would be prioritised (over food)

wildchild554 · 23/02/2019 09:26

@TipseyTorvey i think the issue is purification. We have had issues for a couple of weeks every year due to contaminated water so can definately see this as an issue. Have invested in a sawyer mini water purifier. They are only about £20 and small so can keep it stocked away for emergencies and will probably last the rest of ours lives as good for 100000 gallons i think it was

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2019 09:27

Last summer was a real problem for drought and we've not had enough rain to replenish what we lost. In fact some regions have had record low rainfall in January. Many rivers, ground water and reservoirs are either low or even exceptionally low.

At the moment the met office contingency planning forecast is going for a greater probability of wetter than average rather than drier than average to April, but when you drill down into the detail, the NW is forecast to be most likely to be drier than average. Unfortunately that is one region that is already at lower than usual water supplies.

So while we can't know what weather will be like this Spring and summer, I really would recommend that anyone with a garden makes the most of waterbutts, because we aren't going into the season in a very strong position.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2019 09:48

Gotta say, last summer was a real eye opener for me with water. I live near where the moorland fires were. Manchester area not being rainy was quite a surprise. But that's more a general prepper thing not a Brexit thing. Sorry for derailing.

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/02/2019 09:57

Get chickens if you can manage.

SparklySneakers · 23/02/2019 10:08

@bellinisurge our water turned very chlorinated last summer. They cane out and tested it and said it was fine but it tasted horrible. I ended up buying bottled for drinking.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 23/02/2019 10:39

@BlackeyedGruesome , chickens are a general prepper thing and I have decided no. No room. Although (and this is not the first time I have used this silly joke either), I get henvy from other people's chickens.
