This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

Interesting @Aaahhhbump . Thank you.

SparklySneakers · 23/02/2019 21:28

Jacobs ciabatta crackers, buttered, with Mexican cheese for the win. The cheese is currently good until 9th May. Crackers had months on them and butter can be frozen as we now know. I'm not often a cracker person but I was fed up with bagels and thought I'd give them a go. New brexit box item discovered. Happy Sparkly Smile

Tomorrow is my mushroom drying experiment. I do wonder if I'm going a bit far, but it will be interesting to try it anyway.

GeistohneGrenzen · 24/02/2019 09:09

OYBBK I remember drying mushrooms back in the 70s - must have been an influence of The Good Life at the time! Anyway, strung them up on thread and hung in the airing cupboard for a few months(?) and it worked and they were ok in soups and stews... good luck with yours Smile

Here's my first farmhouse loaf. I think it's a success (though the proof will be in the tasting and if the kids eat it!).

Wonderful!

NoWordForFluffy · 24/02/2019 10:55

There's not much left! BlushGrin

SparklySneakers · 24/02/2019 12:01

That looks amazing!

Wow!

NoWordForFluffy · 24/02/2019 12:29

It tasted like 'proper' bread, which meant the kids ate it too! I'm going to keep buying white flour and yeast so I'm well-stocked.

SparklySneakers · 24/02/2019 12:43

Recipe please!

I've just been down to Tesco and managed to get a pile of tins, formerly Tesco Value, now rebranded, about 23p a tin

Also growers harvest, same, a pile of tinned peaches for about 30p a tin

bellinisurge · 24/02/2019 13:29

Thank you @NoWordForFluffy . Glad it was tasty. Bet the house smelled divine too!

Wolfcub · 24/02/2019 13:56

That looks great Fluffy

TwinkleTits70 · 24/02/2019 13:57

I have just ordered some more easiyo sachets and a bread recipe book for different ideas.

KatyMac · 24/02/2019 14:07

I've got my mojo back with bread after a few disasters! I used to make a couple of loaves a day when I ran the nursery but I got out of the habit!

I'm doing another shop tomorrow I think for bits and pieces - it's hard working out what you might miss if the cost rises

NoWordForFluffy · 24/02/2019 14:33

The smell was amazing! And it really doesn't take that long to do either, which is good.

TwinkleTits70 · 24/02/2019 15:42

Just ordered about a years worth of the hair dye I use. It was a third off and by adding a couple of bits I was able to use a £10 off code and get free delivery as well.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/02/2019 17:08

I am too busy cleaning last night's poorliness and ten tons of fucking washing to forward purchase today.

Floor boards need scrubbing and carpet and the clean sheets and valence sheets that were only on for a few hours before needing a rewash.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2019 17:16

That looks good Fluffy!

Oh no Blackeyed :( that's rotten, just at the end of half term too.

Mixed results on the mushrooms. My veg box ones look great, but they are comparatively more expensive. My supermarket ones are sticking to the baking sheet and I'm starting to end up with dried mushroom crumbs. They are all taking too long and I need my oven back!

As I said to dh life will be bad if we end up resorting to living off dried up bits of mushroom.

I've been out to the garden centre for more compost and some seeds like sunflower seeds and some seed potatoes.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/02/2019 17:27

Billini will convert you to using a dehydrator soon... Just you wait.

Looking forward to trying to plant some seeds etc. I hope yours go well.

Half term has just got a little longer for DD.

DD is away and ex is under strict instructions to not return him til late to avoid any germs.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/02/2019 17:29

I've bought more flour and yeast now I know the bread I make will be eaten. I'll get a couple of bags a week.

Pay day (6th of the month) is when I'll stock up on dairy free spread for the kids (or no more than a few days after once I'm feeling OK post-op).

I have a shit ton of seeds spread between here and the allotment (mostly here) and I've sown some lettuce already, so I should have some ready by the end of March.

I sowed peppers, chillies, cucumbers and peas / mange tout today. They won't be ready for ages, but at least they're on the go now! I bought a heated propagator recently, so have a wider selection of chillies this year.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/02/2019 17:31

Do you rehydrate the dried mushrooms, OYBBK, or just add dried ones to food?

I need to freeze a load of eggs nearer the time, so I can still do baking. Though I'm going to try the dairy / egg free cake that was linked on here soon to see how it goes.

bellinisurge · 24/02/2019 17:36

Gotta say that my dehydrator handled a load of cheapo Aldi mushrooms quite beautifully.GrinGrin
Mushroom risotto is one of dh's many cooking specialties. We can rehydrate a handful and use them in risotto.
Slicing them all was a drag but that's food preservation for you.
