This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

Apple's keep a while in the fridge but not so much fresh peppers. Do you have frozen or do they not count?

NoWordForFluffy · 19/03/2019 22:48

They won't be crunchy! We get through a ridiculous amount of both. I must spend a good £10-12 a week on apples and peppers!

SparklySneakers · 20/03/2019 09:13

Tesco cotton wool section yesterday. Expected delivery end of April and end of May. Will see what I can get locally.

I've picked up 4 packets of instant mash and 24 bags of crisps today to add to my stash.

I've been freezing peppers. Ok they're not crunchy when they come out but doesn't matter to me if I'm cooking them anyway.

AlphaJura · 20/03/2019 10:27

I do the majority of my shopping in Aldi but if I'm on foot with the pram I visit Asda and Iceland. We also have a 24hr Tesco's which sells everything so I sometimes go there. I pick up things like nappies and detergent when I see they're on offer.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2019 10:31

I don't care about cooking peppers but the kids snack on apples and peppers twice a day. They'd eat more if we let them too! I have seedlings but they won't beat fruit for a while!

thecatsthecats · 20/03/2019 11:02

Lidl do lettuce on the root.

We're not big lettuce eaters, so we've just potted them are are taking leaves off as and when we want them, and they regrow from the base.

listsandbudgets · 20/03/2019 11:19

I've just bought 2 chickens. Cooked mumsnet style that should last at least 2-3 weeks :)

I'm sneaking tins of fruit into the house. I have to hide them or the children will snaffle them.

I know that technically Brexit may not be upon us in 10 days time but everything seems in a state of uncertainty. Obviously we have to ask for an extension and there is nothing yet to say that the answer will actually be yes

My freezers are now stuffed full My cupboards are groaning but there are still plenty of plastic boxes.

I've hidden a stash of sweets and chocolates but I'm not saying here were as I think my dd may know my mumsnet posting name so I can't risk it!

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2019 14:24

We are well-stocked with dairy free spread now, which is good. I really do think I might actually be done now! Oh, other than one more kg of cheese!

Wolfcub · 20/03/2019 15:55

The independent are reporting that the EU have voted not to accept the extension. I haven’t seen it in any other paper yet

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2019 16:02

There hasn't been a vote yet, so I'm not sure that reporting is accurate.

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/03/2019 16:02

Aggghhh, I have visitors on Thursday next week so all food needs to be disappeared from view. There is always the good old hide it in the boot of the car method.

The extension talk is helpful to delay the panic rush. I plan to shop everyday next week to keep everything at maximum levels.

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/03/2019 16:03

Cross post. I hope not.

MotherofPearl · 20/03/2019 18:01

New to the thread - which is a great source of ideas and reminders - though I've been building my supplies for a few months.

I think I'm nearly there with basic supplies but want to do a last minute blitz on extras. I'm thinking that store cupboard meals are likely to get a little dull so want to stock up on things to liven them up. I'm thinking bottled lemon juice, lime juice, jars of chopped garlic/ginger etc, herbs and spices, chutneys, ketchups, stock cubes. Any other ideas? Apologies if this has already been covered - I've not had time to read the whole thread yet.

Parker231 · 20/03/2019 18:07

The EU have now said that they will not grant an extension unless the WA is voted through the House of Commons. As it has failed twice, that’s seems very unlikely.

bellinisurge · 20/03/2019 18:43

Any love for hot sauce/sriracha in your house @MotherofPearl ?

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2019 19:17

@SparklySneakers, 3 pack of Fry's orange creams is £1! Bargain!

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2019 19:17

In B&M is the missing link there! 🙈😂

PandaPolarBear · 20/03/2019 19:22

The protestant traybake thread in chat has a lot to answer for... my Brexit stash was a reasonably healthy pile until I started reading that.
Recently added more chocolate, biscuits, desiccated coconut, sugar, marshmallows etc.

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/03/2019 19:30

@MotherofPearl capers, anchovies and olives have all been mentioned,
tomato ketchup, brown sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper, sugar, dipping sauce, sachets of stir fry sauce, soy sauce, worcester sauce, balsamic vinegar, flavoured oils, white wine vinegar, frozen garlic and ginger cubes or in a tube/jar.

chocolate, biscuits, sweets, etc.

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/03/2019 19:33

I need a microwave, sensory toys, and a few things off amazon which I better get my finger out and order. need a few garden supplies as well. (canes and seed potatoes.)

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/03/2019 19:46

dd has an appointment tomorrow so I am grounded for shopping until friday, I may be able to do a quick top up shop. I have the fear again. I hope ther eis a delay as we will be nearer to producing our own vegetables in june.

it will be a busy day on Friday,

my visitors are now coming on Wednesday so I will be able to do a massive shop on thursday, if everyone else is not doing a masssive shop as well. if so, then we will manage with what we have.

going to cook some onions for the freezer now. got to add those to the aubergines and mushrooms I cooked a while back.

MotherofPearl · 20/03/2019 20:15

Thanks @BlackeyedGruesome and @bellinisurge - all great ideas. I'm a huge fan of salty things like anchovies, capers, olives and pickles, so already have healthy stocks of all those.

FoodologistGirl · 20/03/2019 20:36

Motherofpearl

I’ve frozen whole chillies, ginger and garlic so I can grate them from frozen over/in dishes. Also eggs can be frozen in silicon muffin tins to use in cooking. Although most uk eggs should last a few months just in the fridge along with salted butter, hard cheeses and salami type sausages
