There's a deal.

The press are over excited.

May has united the country.

Everyone hates it.
(Apart from David Allen Green)

Parliament might yet reject it.

Nothing is yet decided and everything is still to be sorted.

It wasn't a question about why Barnier changed from
French to English: it was a statement about how interesting it is when he chooses to change.

It is always carefully calculated. He is an intelligent man who can speak both languages English fluently (unlike most of our politicians Hmm) but understands the importance of nuance.

And at the point he chose to talk in English, he wasn't talking to the UK English - he was talking to and for the Irish.

DGRossetti · 15/11/2018 14:50

Wasn't there talk of a 'two speed' Europe 10-15 years ago. Did that happen or fall onto the side of the road?

It was mooted, but rejected - I think national pride kicked in (Greece didn't like being in the second tier ?).

Meet the Stop Brexit protester who just spectacularly upstaged Jacob Rees-Mogg

Steve Bray, 49, turns up to Westminster every day to bellow at MPs. And this time he's outdone himself

Hey The Stop Brexit Man has got an article!

Former minister who WAS very loyal tells me 'she's had it' - suggests although as 'no one wanted this', May would lose a confidence vote because she's been 'pretty useless' - brutal stuff

Speaking of France, we are looking forward to a strike over fuel prices on Saturday so going places may not be an option.
For those in the UK, it's over the water, don't worry your little heads about it.

Well that thread lasted 24 hours Shock What will the next one bring?

DGRossetti · 15/11/2018 14:53

Ideally, addresses in Welsh and Gaelic should have been used. Plus maybe Latin for the Rees-Moggs ....

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2018 14:54

kitten Under Tory party rules:
A No Confidence Vote is triggered if 15 % of the Conservative MPs write letters demanding a confidence vote to the chairman of the party’s “1922 Committee”,
which represents MPs who have no government jobs.

The Conservatives have 315 MPs, so that means 48 letters needed

Hazardswan · 15/11/2018 14:55

Wasn't there talk of a 'two speed' Europe 10-15 years ago.

I half remember a joke about that, something along the lines of the UK would be in the fast lane going slowly. Sums us up.

DGRossetti · 15/11/2018 15:09

Well given how Greece turned out, maybe a 2-track EU would have been better.

It's hazily coming back now ... the idea was that countries that were more aligned - Germany, France, UK, and a few others - moved towards closer ties, with the aim of a single currency, while other countries - Italy, Greece, Spain (?) were less rigidly tied in, but would aim for closer integration in the future.

The problem was that all the 2nd tier countries objected to being in the second tier, and there was no way the UK would sign up to a common currency.

That led to all the fiscal fudges that allowed Greece and Spain into the Euro, and the subsequent bailouts and trouble after 2008.

I read this thread regularly although I don't post much but I just wanted to undermine the Rory Stewart love a bit as he is my MP and I have to say he is a hopeless constituency MP. I've asked for his help twice now and he is completely ineffectual and you have to badger him for any response at all.

That's quite apart from his alarmingly comical appearances on television. When we had serious flooding in Cumbria for the second time following the installation of very expensive flood defences his famous quote was: 'The flood defences weren't breached, the water simply came over the top.' Confused

TatianaLarina · 15/11/2018 15:31

@bigchocfrenzy

According to Ivan Rogers, Cameron was offered Associate EU Membership, something totally new for the EU, which would actually have delivered almost everything

Do you have a link to this? Was it his Hertford speech?

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 15/11/2018 15:35

'The flood defences weren't breached, the water simply came over the top

Grin sorry but that really made me laugh.

borntobequiet · 15/11/2018 15:37

Buenas tardes. Estera de tabla por el momento.

prettybird · 15/11/2018 15:46

I'm not a supporter of Rory Stewart either. He was a strong opponent of the Indyref and iirc, came up with the "Hands Across the Border" idea - getting x,000 people to join hands along the Scottish-English border to represent how "united" the country was.

Never heard of it? Indeed Hmm It never got the support he assumed expected and morphed into a wee cairn, to be added to by visitors, the supporting structure for which is bigger than the actual stones that were placed on it.
