I'm not a supporter of Rory Stewart either. He was a strong opponent of the Indyref and iirc, came up with the "Hands Across the Border" idea - getting x,000 people to join hands along the Scottish-English border to represent how "united" the country was.

Never heard of it? Indeed It never got the support he assumed expected and morphed into a wee cairn, to be added to by visitors, the supporting structure for which is bigger than the actual stones that were placed on it.

I read this thread regularly although I don't post much but I just wanted to undermine the Rory Stewart love a bit as he is my MP and I have to say he is a hopeless constituency MP. I've asked for his help twice now and he is completely ineffectual and you have to badger him for any response at all.

That's quite apart from his alarmingly comical appearances on television. When we had serious flooding in Cumbria for the second time following the installation of very expensive flood defences his famous quote was: 'The flood defences weren't breached, the water simply came over the top.'

Well given how Greece turned out, maybe a 2-track EU would have been better.

It's hazily coming back now ... the idea was that countries that were more aligned - Germany, France, UK, and a few others - moved towards closer ties, with the aim of a single currency, while other countries - Italy, Greece, Spain (?) were less rigidly tied in, but would aim for closer integration in the future.

The problem was that all the 2nd tier countries objected to being in the second tier, and there was no way the UK would sign up to a common currency.

That led to all the fiscal fudges that allowed Greece and Spain into the Euro, and the subsequent bailouts and trouble after 2008.

I half remember a joke about that, something along the lines of the UK would be in the fast lane going slowly. Sums us up.

It was mooted, but rejected - I think national pride kicked in (Greece didn't like being in the second tier ?).

It wasn't a question about why Barnier changed from
French to English: it was a statement about how interesting it is when he chooses to change.

It is always carefully calculated. He is an intelligent man who can speak both languages English fluently (unlike most of our politicians ) but understands the importance of nuance.

And at the point he chose to talk in English, he wasn't talking to the UK English - he was talking to and for the Irish.

Are you disappearing as a country by been in the EU and giving so much power away to it on all the laws and regulations.
