Westministenders: Game Over?

May has a draft deal which she has presented to the Cabinet. Woohooo!

The catch is, it doesn't mention the Irish Border. Just a minor point. This is because she has no way forward on it. There are so many red lines from so many different groups shes tangled up in knots with them.

She wrote a letter to the DUP to tell them to suck it up. Arlene has told her to stick it. And if she hadn't told her to stick it, Scottish Tories would have told her to stick it. David Davis has told her to stick it. Rees-Moog has told her to stick it. And this afternoon, one of the Ministers for Queues at Dover, Jo Johnson, told her to stick it and that we need a people's vote. On top of that, her plans to try and get cross party support and get the Labour Party to support it, have suffered a blow as Momentum voted to tell May to stick it.

In fact it might be harder to think of people who WILL support it.

Not that this is a surprise. We've all be aware of this for some time. Is it finally game over?

The government have at least seemingly realised that this month is the last opportunity they have for a deal. Dominic has also realised that Dover is quite close to France and this is quite a big deal.

The EU pushed back their meeting until the 27th. This coincidentally is the same day there is a decision over a50 at the ECJ and the right to revoke.

If May can't get her act together over the Irish Border, this might yet prove to be the last option open to her, to prevent Brexmaggeddon.

Jo Johnson is not too far from the mark with vassalage or chaos? Take your pick Mrs May.

{Reckon the parliamentary vote will be going down to the wire at Christmas.}
Shame the UK's reputation and prosperity is going down the toilet first.
Don't pick on Surferjet, she has been quite valiant and the 'Brexit Arms' thread was a pleasant diversion.
And now a little music while we wait for the UK gov to come up with a workable plan. Wagners 'ring cycle' anyone?

DGRossetti · 14/11/2018 13:20

I wonder who will be the first Brexiteer to call for another referendum ?

Bollocks to that. It was full of nasty veiled and not-so-veiled insults, coupled with a complete ignorance of the facts, and a tendency to respond to any request for clarity or detail with "You lost. Get over it."

Well, guess what ? Looks like we have. You won. Get over it.

For the life of me i cant remember the catch phrase that she accidentally created on the brexit arms thread.... We carried it on for pages it was quite funny if nothing else.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 13:35

Former Tory leader William Hague is an important (if unenthusiastic) supporter of the bill
Interesting that Penny Mordaunt is not the automatic resigner we expected, maybe later

Tom Newton Dunnn@tnewtondunn* (RTE, very reliable source)

William Hague previews No10’s sales pitch for the deal. UK gets its own immigration policy and no more ‘big’ payments to Brussels, but:
“It’s true there are many compromises, but did anyone think we’d be able to leave the EU without them?”
@BBCr4today
...
I’m told Penny Mordaunt is awaiting further assurances before she puts her name to the Brexit deal, having now read it and seen PM.
But allies warn “don't expect fireworks today” from her.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 13:37

SJ was the most UNgracious winner
Never rising above "you lost, get over it, remoaners"

She's been promising she'll have a big street party on Brexit Day
Wonder if that'll still happen if this deal goes through

It's Brexit, Jim, but not as we know it

Peregrina · 14/11/2018 13:44

Which thread is surferjet feeling stitched up on? I thought she/he wasn't commentating on brexit any more, being bored with it?

I have zero sympathy for those posters who crowed and crowed about Brexit, but couldn't tell us what they voted for. If they had bothered to think what they wanted, then they could have productively spent their time writing to their MPs or getting involved in things to say 'this is what we want to aim for with Brexit'.

1tisILeClerc · 14/11/2018 13:47

Frothy and??????? Cross?
Just had a weird 'spiritual' moment and looked up the Samson and Delilah story. I think it was the 'end' bit when he pushed the temple down killing himself and the Philistines that triggered it.
I had thought of Charge of the light brigade as a foolish destructive act, but they were under orders and not 'free willed'.
I will have a cup of coffee, that should help.

Talkstotrees · 14/11/2018 13:47

@Peregrina - a rare AIBU Brexit thread :) www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3422685-Brexit-have-you-changed-your-mind?msgid=82572741#82572741

(Expect, congrats! I never got the hang of swaddling. Sorry. Enjoy!)

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 13:47

Far too few Tory Remainer rebels for 2nd vote to happen - so far only 16

Unknown how many ERG will vote against - 40 / 50 ? - and how many more would abstain
but ERG want No Deal and won't vote for a 2nd Ref

Just needs some Labour rebels to vote for the deal,
or double that to abstain - even for JC to decide this to avoid blame

Tory remainers 'getting cold feet' about Brexit deal rebellion

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/nov/14/tory-remainers-getting-cold-feet-about-brexit-deal-rebellion

Tory remainer rebels were gathering for crunch talks on Wednesday to decide whether to back Theresa May’s Brexit plan,
amid suggestions that a number were getting “cold feet” and could reluctantly throw their weight behind the government.

The Guardian understands that at least seven remain-supporting Tory MPs - the former chancellor Ken Clarke and six more who are calling for a second referendum – will vote against a deal,
with a further three expected to announce they will join them

DGRossetti · 14/11/2018 13:47

Interesting that Penny Mordaunt is not the automatic resigner we expected, maybe later

Who gives a shit ? As things seem right now, this might have been the magic spell which allows Theresa May to leave office (yes, there is a subtext) with her head held high, and something of consequence behind her that isn't illegal, immoral or inflammable.

Seems Brexiteers have been pushed into a corner - and I for one couldn't be happier. By missing their chance to topple TM (I am in no doubt they thought they could - and maybe they really could have) in order to eke out their shelf life, they've come unstuck. Horribly.

The referendum is honoured. Possibly even the manifesto pledge. And now Brexiteers can STFU. Because, as we've all been told (can't remember by whom) nobody likes a sore loser.

Peregrina · 14/11/2018 13:50

Thanks.
When will MN move the thread? Can't have Brexit threads cluttering up AIBU or whatever.

DGRossetti · 14/11/2018 13:52

No need to now. Brexit is sorted. Hurrah !!!!! Just in time for "Whos a celebrity ?"

Funny, that programme title makes more sense when shortened.

On with the emu-arse eating (thinks of Nadine Dorries.)

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 14:08

Not sorted yet - the suspense will drag on until mid-December,
when the HoC votes on the deal

... may go on even longer, if May is toppled before then, or the HoC votes down the deal

Hazardswan · 14/11/2018 14:10

James is not optimistic...

I hate suspense.

Westministenders: Game Over?
DGRossetti · 14/11/2018 14:20

I've been spectacularly wrong up until now, but I think this will get through the HoC. Right now, in hindsight, the triggering of A50 was genius.

We'll end up with a uniquely British (although for how much longer) omnifudge that no one wanted, and no one had the guts to stop. In part down to the Remainer MPs who went to ground or turned tail. We're all going to emerge covered in shit.

I really see Labour abstaining, and letting this through. All the talk of dumping May, when it's Corbyn we needed to change.

Either way, forget solar or wind power. I think the UK has just about become self sufficient on Bexiteer energy. They are incandescent. Apoplectic. Completely incoherent, (although that's not with rage, that's just the default setting).

1tisILeClerc · 14/11/2018 14:26

The Timothy C comment is interesting, for those (unlike me) who could be bothered to find out. The FX rate has been bobbing up and down over the last 2 years to sneaking a few hundred grand (like in my back pocket,,,,not!) in the right (semi predictable) direction will be coming up Trumps.

OMG. Who puts their faith in Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson?!

RedToothBrush · 14/11/2018 14:29

Christopher Hope @christopherhope
Minister: "Two members of the Cabinet will resign today". Me: "Who?" Minister: "Penny Mordaunt and Esther McVey." #BrexitDeal

I bet they don't

Laura Kuenssberg @bbclaurak
Just before Cabinet started, letter from Scottish Tory MPs, including Sec of State, hand delivered to No 10 warning against any backsliding on fishing rights - PM simply can't afford to lose those 13 votes

The wicked part of me wants to report that AIBU thread. Grin

After all, the time(ish) before last, when they moved a thread to the Brexit topic and I pointedly reported a whole load of "AIBU" threads that "should" be in other topics, they justified the move on the basis that the OP was actively campaigning and therefore they were right to move it (I think there was a link to either a petition or a Remain website in it).

There was no such "campaigning" in the AIBU thread that was moved yesterday Hmm It was done purely because people had reported it.

MNHQ (or maybe just some of the moderators) are cowardly hypocrites in the way that they allow themselves to be bullied into moving the Brexit discussions.

1tisILeClerc · 14/11/2018 14:38

If you are referring to the DUP thread, I think it might self combust. I'm not going to comment on it.
