Westministenders: Game Over?

May has a draft deal which she has presented to the Cabinet. Woohooo!

The catch is, it doesn't mention the Irish Border. Just a minor point. This is because she has no way forward on it. There are so many red lines from so many different groups shes tangled up in knots with them.

She wrote a letter to the DUP to tell them to suck it up. Arlene has told her to stick it. And if she hadn't told her to stick it, Scottish Tories would have told her to stick it. David Davis has told her to stick it. Rees-Moog has told her to stick it. And this afternoon, one of the Ministers for Queues at Dover, Jo Johnson, told her to stick it and that we need a people's vote. On top of that, her plans to try and get cross party support and get the Labour Party to support it, have suffered a blow as Momentum voted to tell May to stick it.

In fact it might be harder to think of people who WILL support it.

Not that this is a surprise. We've all be aware of this for some time. Is it finally game over?

The government have at least seemingly realised that this month is the last opportunity they have for a deal. Dominic has also realised that Dover is quite close to France and this is quite a big deal.

The EU pushed back their meeting until the 27th. This coincidentally is the same day there is a decision over a50 at the ECJ and the right to revoke.

If May can't get her act together over the Irish Border, this might yet prove to be the last option open to her, to prevent Brexmaggeddon.

Jo Johnson is not too far from the mark with vassalage or chaos? Take your pick Mrs May.

Have a nice tea red. Wine thanks

WorriedMutha · 09/11/2018 16:46

No 10 on Jo Johnson - “The referendum in 2016 was the biggest democratic exercise in this country’s history. We will not under any circumstances have a second referendum. The Prime Minister thanks Jo Johnson for his work in government.”

WorriedMutha · 09/11/2018 16:48

And from Tom Newton Dunn..........
I very much doubt Jo will be the last Remainer to resign from the Govt to vote for a 2nd referendum. At least four others in the mid ranks have been on the verge for several months.

DarlingNikita · 09/11/2018 16:49

Thanks Red.

At least four others in the mid ranks have been on the verge for several months.

I'm interested to see who feels emboldened to come out of the woodwork in his wake.

RedToothBrush · 09/11/2018 16:55

The emergency exits are to the front of the air craft over the wing and to the rear.

Abandon ship!

I'm not sure whether we are ready for the escape chutes yet but the oxygen masks have dropped.

BollocksToBrexit · 09/11/2018 16:59

Jo Johnson should be the next PM. For no other reason than for how much it'd really, really piss off Boris.

WorriedMutha · 09/11/2018 17:02

Could Jo do to Boris what Ed did to David?

DGRossetti · 09/11/2018 17:03

Alternatively, he may have just handed a zipwire to Boris ?

KennDodd · 09/11/2018 17:05

If the Remainers all abandon ship does that only leave the hard Brexiteers in charge?

KennDodd · 09/11/2018 17:07

Anyway, have you all written your letters to the PM and MPs?

SusanWalker · 09/11/2018 17:08

If the Remainers all abandon ship does that only leave the hard Brexiteers in charge?

Yes but that's good. Let them own it. Then when we're in the shit it'll be harder for brexiteers to blame it all on remain ers in the government.

woman11017 · 09/11/2018 17:09

Time to email the BBC again.

@mikegalsworthy
The @BBC just misreported Jo Johnson’s call for a #PeoplesVote - by leaving out his call for a Remain option.

There are so many ironic things going on it is difficult to keep up.
May laying wreaths to honour those fallen, while rejecting the process that has kept war within the EU at bay.

DGRossetti · 09/11/2018 17:11

If the Remainers all abandon ship does that only leave the hard Brexiteers in charge?

Possibly. But it also damages the credibility of whatever POS deal May tries to ram through parliament. As long as there was a mix of beliefs in the cabinet, she can peddle the lie that it's "the best course".

But if people drip drip drip out, it gets harder and harder.

As people have noted tirelessly, they can read English in Europe. The less support May has here, they less they have to pretend to give a shit about respecting her ... bearing in mind all this has happened because since she had that rather cringeworthy "I must be respected" moment a while back.

Given that Raab is the level of talent she has to draw on, I am seriously wondering if Noddy is still around to be the next minister.

Also, ever resignation/appointment cycle must cost time. Even if a new minister has already been appointed (and that might be problematic, if May is forced to go to her fifth choice) it would take weeks to get up to speed.

Tick tock.

1tisILeClerc · 09/11/2018 17:14

{it would take weeks to get up to speed.}
Or a couple of days speed reading the Westminsterenders thread.

1tisILeClerc · 09/11/2018 17:15

Mind you, it would reveal how few good 'intelligent' choices there are.

Damn kenn!!! Letters!! Will post tonight.

Jo Johnson remember, is the one who wasn't afraid to go against the overwhelming will of the people, when he refused to call a new research vessel Boaty McBoatface. The name does live on in the vessel's submersibles, but since only the fish and other deep sea creatures will see a submersible, and I doubt whether they can read, it doesn't matter.

KennDodd · 09/11/2018 17:19

I worry about a 'people's vote' given that it only just seems to be dawning on brexiteer ministers the lose, lose options on the table, the public are still a long way behind this. Many, many people are still under the delusion that Brexit is easy and will be great, 'just leave now' just listen to the Question Time audience or read the comments in the papers/BBC, I actually heard somebody in real life say that 'they need us more than we need them'.

DGRossetti · 09/11/2018 17:22

Interesting ... the Boaty McBoatface incident has been cited a few times as an example of how the powers that be could - and have - told the great unwashed to take a hike, whenever they whine "the will of the people" chorus.

KennDodd · 09/11/2018 17:22

Thank you for all the threads Red. Shame you didn't come to the March and see the toothbrush tribute.
