Westministenders: Game Over?

May has a draft deal which she has presented to the Cabinet. Woohooo!

The catch is, it doesn't mention the Irish Border. Just a minor point. This is because she has no way forward on it. There are so many red lines from so many different groups shes tangled up in knots with them.

She wrote a letter to the DUP to tell them to suck it up. Arlene has told her to stick it. And if she hadn't told her to stick it, Scottish Tories would have told her to stick it. David Davis has told her to stick it. Rees-Moog has told her to stick it. And this afternoon, one of the Ministers for Queues at Dover, Jo Johnson, told her to stick it and that we need a people's vote. On top of that, her plans to try and get cross party support and get the Labour Party to support it, have suffered a blow as Momentum voted to tell May to stick it.

In fact it might be harder to think of people who WILL support it.

Not that this is a surprise. We've all be aware of this for some time. Is it finally game over?

The government have at least seemingly realised that this month is the last opportunity they have for a deal. Dominic has also realised that Dover is quite close to France and this is quite a big deal.

The EU pushed back their meeting until the 27th. This coincidentally is the same day there is a decision over a50 at the ECJ and the right to revoke.

If May can't get her act together over the Irish Border, this might yet prove to be the last option open to her, to prevent Brexmaggeddon.

Jo Johnson is not too far from the mark with vassalage or chaos? Take your pick Mrs May.

Most ominous moment in Cabinet today: Penny Mordaunt asked the PM to suspend collective responsibility to give all ministers a free vote on her deal in Commons. PM didn’t respond (ht

Just got back from this.
It was fab.
I'm waiting for confirmation, but sure that SNP speaker announced that JC has signed cross party letter calling for People's Vote.

Public has been duped, Jo Johnson tells Gary Lineker at rally for new Brexit vote

Backers of second referendum gather in London to voice concerns about Theresa May’s plans

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/nov/13/public-has-been-duped-jo-johnson-tells-gary-lineker-at-rally-for-new-brexit-vote

Sold out in 3 days. Queues round the block. Packed with thousands.
Dominic Grieve and many others got standing ovations.

@Best For Britain will have the whole thing up to watch tomorrow.

Nah JC actually doing something useful? Is it a blue moon tonight?

Sounds like a fab event will look out for the link tomo.

woman11017 · 14/11/2018 00:10

@IanBlackfordMP
Tonight, with other opposition leaders, I am demanding that Theresa May and the UK government drop any & all plans that would deny the usual democratic procedures of Parliament. The final #Brexit vote must be amendable & any attempt to stop that would be an affront to democracy.

Tips from Mike Galsworthy on emergency letters and emails to MPs.

On the other hand.......

@REMAINinEU
Exactly what we've suspected all along. Labour's Barry Gardiner on Newsnight: "Jeremy has offered to Theresa May a way of getting this through."

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn (RTE)
If PM secures agreement to deal, this is just the end of the beginning.
If she doesn't, we are back to square one
Either way the heavy lifting lies ahead.
Brexit uncertainty will be with us into the mid-2020s and beyond.
....
Final thought for tonight: I hear the draft Future Framework will also be published tomorrow.
It’s only 15 pages long and means all things to all men,Chequers as well as Canada. It will either fool everyone or no one
< Norway ++ possible too >
...but, Cabinet expected to last at least 3 hours tomorrow afternoon, so it’s going to be another long night.
....

If Cabinet agrees the deal, No10 will begin a massive sales job immediately tomorrow night. All 500 pages of the divorce deal will be published in full, and PM will give a live TV press conference.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 01:08

Reports are that the HoC will be asked to vote on the WA in mid-December

That gives time for (probably just) EU Commission lawyers / drafters to formally write out the agreement ready for signing
and also discussion by all sides

Let's hope May is still in power (rarely that I wish for that) and that the deal gets that far

imo, this is as good as we'll get:
No time for a 2nd ref

If May thinks the bill won't pass the HoC, JC might demand a 2nd ref afterwards, for Labour support to approve the deal

BUT - if the EU actually agree to an A50 extension of some months for this -

both Labour & Tory likely to agree that any ref can only be this deal vs No Deal,
i.e. without any Remain option

notangelinajolie · 14/11/2018 01:57

LOL @ Gary Lineker - he needs to stick to the day job.

mathanxiety · 14/11/2018 06:15

It would be perfectly possibly to pass a law pardoning all crimes committed during the Troubles

What would make it more sensible - and maybe required under the GFA - is to agree it with the RoI, who might well insist that all terrorists, Republican & Loyalist, be pardoned too

Not going to happen.
Dublin has a huge interest in prosecuting terrorists of all stripes because successive governments in Ireland have seen all terrorist groups on the island (including the Provos) as hostile to the Republic.

mathanxiety · 14/11/2018 06:21

Hence Arlene saying
"It would be democratically unacceptable for Northern Ireland trade rules to be set by Brussels. Northern Ireland would have no representation in Brussels and would be dependent on a Dublin government speaking up for our core industries."

The irony being of course that the only parties sticking up for NI's core industries right now and for the last two years are those in Dail Eireann.

The DUP has no mandate whatsoever from NI to pursue the Brexit line they are pursuing. NI voted to remain. NI voted overwhelmingly for the GFA.

These people are utterly shameless, and arrogant.

Thanks JWIM for letting me know Jesse Norman is the new Transport Minister. ‘Who he? indeed.
I suppose his main qualification for being picked was that he would agree to any deal. Nothing to do with any knowledge of transport.

I don't think this is the best deal we can get
mother that was the point.
The whole thing was carefully callibrated to include all, including JC and the trots.

Lammy was great as usual and pointed that since being bullied for being black in a working class area of London, growing up, he could never share a platform with 'tribalists' like farridge. (who tweeted in support of JC earlier this week)

Gary Linekar was great. Jo Johnson was like a returning hero. His brother could never have got the ovation he got.

They know.

Is this where the vote is live on BBC Parliament later? They all break from the chamber and head to the lobby? I love watching those.

surely the remainer conservatives should put their money where their moths are and defy the whip
Like Mrs8 said ages back; it's unlikely, there was a strong sense of the need for cross party support for this. We shall see. Expect the worst. Hope for the best. Wink

So while the 'ladies' in government dance around their handbags, and the 'men' play pocket billiards, what are the companies that do real work bringing finance into the UK supposed to do if the real decision may not be firmed up until December?
