Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

In or Out was voted for in the 2015 election - seem to remember that Con + UKIP dwarfed Lab/Lib Dem

And at the next GE, the people will get to change their minds again if they so wish.

Sometimes what looked good on a leaflet looks like a heap of hooey when it actually comes about.

Yes three trees - you see we simply must keep voting until the people deliver the right answer!

Like the 1975 referendum followed by the 2016 referendum?

It took a while and it took quite a lot of mystery money funneled through mystery outfits, but by gum, the answer you wanted squeaked through.

Today we march!
I have no red toothbrush but I'll give a nod to anyone i see with one Grin

So on this sunny day we learned that some LibDems are as linked as the Tories to Cambridge Analytica. Nick Clegg is also leaving us, whilst he escapes to Facebook HQ.

I am nodding in agreement with the individual on the Cadwalladr Twitter link earlier who said Clegg is making a career out of being a useful idiot.

mathanxiety · 20/10/2018 07:43

The ERG seem to have forgotten NI yet again if they intend to oppose bans on military calibre weapon ownership...

woman11017 · 20/10/2018 07:45

#PeoplesVoteMarch already trending on twitter.
If those who can't march could post info on the march today on SM that would be lovely. Smile and useful. Beyond this island this is being seen by our US and EU friends.

TheElementsSong · 20/10/2018 07:52

Emily I have to say the sheer eye-watering expense of living in SF is the most off putting factor for us. We have a lot of friends and colleagues in the area (the perks of being academic scientists, there’s hardly a major city in the world where we don’t know people). And I have also heard about the problems with school places in the area. But by far the saddest thing is the huge number of homeless people which is a lot to do with the lack of health and social care - which is where the arch-Brexiteers are trying to take us Sad

I love Castro Street. Smile Met some of the finest feminists (of both sexes Wink) in San Franciso.

Newsflash!!!
Mystery shortage of Red toothbrushes across the UK causes conspiracy theory.

Hope the weather stays fine in London for the March.

Was watching an old episode of Frasier last night, the one where Niles has to give a safety talk to elementary school kids:

Niles: Four rodent hairs, and the head capsule of an adult grain beetle.

[The kids enthusiastically yell out "Ew!" etc., followed by various calls of "Chocolate! Milk! Meat! Cookies!"]

Niles: Okay, I heard chocolate, I'll take chocolate. Per 100 grams, the government allows an average of approximately 60 insect fragments and the odd rodent hair.

[Again, the kids enthusiastically react to being grossed out.]

Niles: But let's say you want to play it safe. Maybe drink a can of fruit juice. That's healthy... or is it? Well, sure... if your idea of healthy is approximately five fly eggs and a maggot! This is your government, people!

Seems very apt just now Smile

I can't make it to the march but best of luck to you all and hope the weather holds.
You are helping to represent the million or so British who are abroad.

GingerPCatt · 20/10/2018 08:47

I mainly lurk here but DH and and a friend of his and I will be marching. I feel that for my own mental health I need to feel like I’ve done something.

Buteo · 20/10/2018 09:02

It’s just made the BBC R4 news headlines too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/10/2018 09:02

I'm marching today with a group of friends :) I'll look out for the red tooth brushes.

It is about the only tiny positive - the media treatment has increased compared to the almost non existent reporting of the previous marches.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 09:23

Enjoy your day, marchers ! ✨

Enjoy today everyone.

The red toothbrush thing is lovely.

For record, my toothbrush isn't red. I don't think I've ever had a red toothbrush. It was simply the first thing that came into my head whilst trying to think of a random username!

RTB - sometimes the first thing that comes into your head is a stroke of genius. Just setting off, with red toothbrush sticking prominently out of my top pocket!

Have a great day, everyone.

pointythings · 20/10/2018 09:43

I can't march either - I have two sick teenagers and a phobia of crowds - but I will be there in spirit.

I'll be going and my husband and children will hopefully be joining us half way round, with a 9 month old I'm a bit worried about feeding/changing him so I didn't want to put them through whole thing. Fingers crossed for a big turn out.
