Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

@acgrayling
In a desperate effort to spike the gathering momentum for a #PeoplesVote the hapless but very well-funded ‘Leave means Leave’ folk have bought the words ‘people’s march’ on the internet so that those searching for place & time tomorrow will be misdirected by Brexiter propaganda.

U.K. to Drop Brexit Demand on Irish Border to Ease Deal

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is said to be ready to ditch one of her key Brexit demands in order to resolve the vexed issue of the Irish border and clear the path to a deal, according to people familiar with the matter

The fix opens the possibility that Britain would end up bound indefinitely to the European Union’s customs rules. While that’s something that the EU and many businesses want, it risks detonating a crisis in May’s government that could even bring her down

re mundell and the scots fishing industry, i understood a raft of their quota was sold to 'forrin' corps. if that was the case, in the event of brexit, wont they want compensating for loss of the quota they bought?
Pretty sure that any contracts wouldnt have anticipated brexit.

frankiestein401 · 19/10/2018 19:27

apologies - its the england/wales quota thats held by forriners, the scots quota seems to be held by rogues;

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2018 19:29

woman That's disgraceful
Shows how worried they are about People's Marches

All their money and dirty tricks is needed, because they seem unable to organise a Brexit march

prettybird · 19/10/2018 19:33

God knows and if He doesn't, sure as hell this Government doesn't Wink

But given the fishermen (both Scottish and English) sold their boats with their quotas because of the way that the UK government had chosen to implement the quota system (but not bothered to communicate this, apparently Confused), and given that fishing is one of the devolved areas that the UK government has clawed back to Westminster under the Withdrawal Bill, I have no great confidence in their negotiating skills (given that it's not just about the Common Fishing Policy, it's also about sustaining the fishing stocks and even Iceland and Norway don't fish to oblivion) Hmm and b) it's Fluffy, who only got the job in 2015 'cos he was the only Tory in Scotlanf and the other 12 who came in in 2017 were all newbies Hmm

WoodenCupCake · 19/10/2018 20:08

My dh's friend works in investment banking (can't say what his role is but he has a PhD and works in IT). He is going on the march tomorrow but he also said said that he had had a meeting at the bank last week where they were all convinced that there is going to be a deal and a mini boom following the deal.

Would the bank really assume there is a deal if it is not likely? They must have political analysts who have a good understanding of the situation. Apparently they were not too concerned.

Hope he is right. Halloween Hmm

I am a PPP Previous Prolific Poster and enjoyer of Parks and Rec for whom real life took over in spades but

I will look out for the red toothbrushes tomorrow

Elements You really don't want to move to SF, beautiful place, but I don't see Miriam lasting two minutes with the "beautiful" decadent shallow people. The school situation in Silicon valley is a nightmare. I know a single mom commuting from Marin County as a result. Not issues even Zuckerberg's squillions could solve. I went there full of dreams and came back after two months, maybe I just don't do clean and sterile beautiful and prefer dirty edgy and chaotic beautiful Wink but it has to be the ultimate hardship posting for a cultured intelligent European partner, whatever the other ethics.......

Emilyontmoor · 19/10/2018 20:39

Though admittedly the asian culture there was one of the saving graces....

Hazardswan · 19/10/2018 20:41

@hasenstein forgot to say earlier sending psychic vibes that theres a nice small bubble tomorrow around you thats peaceful and calm while your in the crowd. You're a Star

lonelyplanetmum · 19/10/2018 20:58

I don't see Miriam lasting over there either. To be fair, I can see why you'd want to escape when all seems lost here. Also their children are getting older aren't they and Universities are pretty good there, and ours are set to plummet.

( Otherwise why escape to that country & in Trumpton times I don't know.)

Also perhaps Clegg feels he can make an international political difference by regulating the all-powerful SM and tech platforms? He might think there's work to be done controlling all those individuals, corporations, organisations and governments who abuse FB?

Emilyontmoor · 19/10/2018 21:18

Hasn’t he admitted he was naive in his dealings with the Tories? I hope he has learnt that lesson........

lonelyplanetmum · 19/10/2018 21:28

I suppose this time he'll be earning 1m (£ or $?) per year so that would broaden many people's shoulders.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2018 21:34

Jüri Laas@jurilaas
Here it is. The EU-Singapore free trade agreement.

This is what a trade agreement looks like
This is why they usually take 5-15 years to negotiate

and why - if we get a WA, the transition agreement would probably be extended a few times

The UK has a much larger and more complex economy than Singapore - which is just a city state

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2018 21:37

I don't even want to think about renegotiating non-EU FTAs

or new FTAs, e.g. with the US - if it is done quickly, then the UK will have just accepted everything the US demands.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2018 21:49

Fintan O'Toole

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/19/brexiters-theresa-may-northern-ireland

... since May triggered article 50, we have had, on the crucial border question, nothing but bluster and magical thinking.

The prime minister has signed up twice, in December and in March, to the so-called backstop
to ensure that Northern Ireland remains fully aligned with the Republic to avoid a hard border.

The rest of us are entitled to assume that she knew what she was doing.

And yet here we still are, with May trying to wriggle away from these commitments.
Why?
Because they were predicated on the emergence of some as yet uninvented technology for invisible border control

HurricaneFliss · 19/10/2018 22:25

According to the Telegraph (so it must be true) Miriam is giving up being a lawyer but will be doing charity work. Their eldest son is recovering from lymphoma.

Nick is giving up campaigning for remain and
"He will be paid to lobby in Europe and the US on behalf of Facebook, where the company is facing investigations over its tax affairs and data breaches"

Hasenstein · 19/10/2018 22:31

Sorry, been out but aw shucks, Hazard, that's very kind of you and thanks for the vibes. I'm sure my fears will be allayed by all the lovely people around me.

So, MIL and SFIL arrived this afternoon to save the day and make sure DH is ok so I can go on the march after all. Arriving a bit later but will try to wave a red tooth brush around hoping to be spotted by Westministenders.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 19/10/2018 23:38

...why call it the Peoples' Vote - thought that was done in 2016

Also done on 5 June 1975 but it seems people can change their minds.
