Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

For every one marching they will represent at least 2 or three more.

I can’t go, as can’t my 100 year old mum and 90 year old aunt along with the rest of our family, who all support the people’s vote and remain.

Both Mum and her sister remember what Europe was like before some of the countries joined in such a peaceful enterprise - the ECSC and Mum watched it grow from there. She is utterly bewildered that the U.K. is willing to throw aside such a powerful force for good.

I am writing on her behalf as she is clueless when it comes to social media. Not all elderly folk were bamboozled by the MSM, some of us do actually use the odd brain cell!

There are many many more tweets from individuals going by train and car from all over the country.

These ones were all from groups on coaches.

There were a lot more.

I must be a bit dim - I’ve only just realised the Peoples Vote logo is in the suffragette colours.

I m on one of those 8 coaches from Devon!

BollocksToBrexit · 20/10/2018 10:38

As a brit in Europe denied the right to vote (ballot paper arrived too late), I'm getting a bit tearful seeing the pictures of people going off to march. Especially seeing as I don't think it'll make a blind bit of difference. The government don't give a shit and the rest of Parliament are too cowardly to take a stand.

lonelyplanetmum · 20/10/2018 10:45

Cambridge train is packed apparently.

Emilyontmoor · 20/10/2018 10:56

A lot of helicopters in the sky over London today, no sporting events I know of so looks like the media are investing in covering it...

ScouseQueen · 20/10/2018 10:57

Liverpool train packed too.

FridayThirteenth · 20/10/2018 11:02

Marching today! Not organised enough to get a red tooth brush (or a sign Blush) but will be keeping an eye out for you.

Never marched before but this is too important to do nothing. Feeling excited!

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2018 11:04

Especially seeing as I don't think it'll make a blind bit of difference. The government don't give a shit and the rest of Parliament are too cowardly to take a stand.

There are two newspapers I keep to remind me of important things in life. One is dated the 21st March 1993. One is dated 16th February 2003. The day after the day before.

They don't just remind me of what happened. They remind me of bigger things. Some good. Some bad. Things that are as relevant today as they were then.

Both events had effects in unexpected ways. The knock on effect may not be, and perhaps is unlikely to be, a people's vote.

It does not mean its pointless nor does it mean that its a failure because it did not achieve its stated goals.

This is a time when there are lots of people who need symbolism and need to come together. That's important.

Do not underestimate the value of it nor capacity of the ripple effect.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2018 11:11

Hannan calling on Leave supporters not to vote in any 2nd ref:

  • sounds like he's worried there will be one !
  • people who boycott votes do so when they think they won't win
  • remember all those Leavers telling Remainers who didn't vote - especially the young - that it meant they had to suck it up
FridayThirteenth · 20/10/2018 11:13

Yes BigChoc I saw that.

Seems like a weird thing to do?

Is it so if the vote doesn't go their way they can say it's not valid?

I have attended all the marches from my home in a very Brexity area and today, for the first time ever, there are some others with placards in my train carriage.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2018 11:39

More on this:

Laura Kuenssberg @bbclaurak
Trouble ahead - Brexiteer @SteveBakerHW has placed amendments to Northern Ireland bill publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill/2017-2019/0275/amend/NIEFEoF_rm_cwh_1019.pdf - ERG can easily use Parliament to try to force govt policy^

Sam McBride @SJAMcBride
This is uncomfortable for the Government - & not just the Brexit amendments. The amendments from the Tory chair of the NI Affairs Select Committee, @AWMurrison, (likely to get DUP support) would see a beefed up scrutiny role for the committee - more creeping direct rule.

ERG POWER GRAB FOR NI.
