MNHQ here: results of our Brexit survey - 71% want another referendum

RowanMumsnet · 04/09/2018 10:35

Hello

We ran a survey on Mumsnet in August-September; more than 2000 of you took part. We were asking about your thoughts about Brexit and whether there should be a second referendum.

We're releasing the results today, and they show that 71% said they wanted another referendum (although 26% don't).

60% of survey respondents said they felt misled by claims made by campaigners in the 2016 referendum, including 41% who said they felt misled by claims made by the Leave campaign and 18% who said they felt misled by claims made by both Remain and Leave.

Summing up, one respondent said 'I envisaged jobs, travel and opportunity, not having a potato delivered by the army.'

You can read all about it here.

Thanks
MNHQ

Thanks MNHQ

0% people doing the survey voted leave though, is that right? Slightly skewed results if so. Or maybe people just don't want to admit to voting leave now it's obvious what a catastrophically stupid idea it was in the first place.

TeddyIsaHe · 04/09/2018 11:26

Oh, I didn't look at how it was filtered, ignore me!

Talkstotrees · 04/09/2018 11:40

Am I missing something? Looking for split of respondents who voted leave/remain in 2016.

wurzelburga · 04/09/2018 11:44

A completely unrepresentative sample of the electorate though - rubbish in, rubbish out.

(And I am a staunch remainer!)

Ivaidea · 04/09/2018 11:50

Can we have numbers as well as percentages please? This is meaningless unless we can see that the declared 2016 voting pattern of the sample broadly reflects the referendum result.

Btw I am a remainer and want Brexit cancelled.

DarlingNikita · 04/09/2018 12:38

I've little sympathy for the whinging. e.g.

“The Leave campaign did not mention about no deal/crashing out at the time. So, what, you couldn't imagine even in your wildest dreams/most sensible moments that that might happen?

Stupid bastards.

"
“The Leave campaign did not mention about no deal/crashing out at the time. So, what, you couldn't imagine even in your wildest dreams/most sensible moments that that might happen?"I voted remain, but
I had absolutely no idea what to expect from leave . I had no idea leaving would be like this. I suppose I thoughr there would be an established process we'd follow

NonaGrey · 04/09/2018 12:58

'I envisaged jobs, travel and opportunity

Really?

Wow.

Lottapianos · 04/09/2018 13:04

'I envisaged jobs, travel and opportunity

Really?

I know Shock

I want another referendum but only on the condition that 'No Deal' is not offered as an option. No Deal is not something that can be seriously considered. Heaven knows how many bloody minded Leave voters will choose it as 'a protest vote' or to give somebody or other 'a bloody nose' or any of the other stupid reasons that some people voted Leave. We want an end to this absolute shitshow, not an extension of it

What I would really like is for the government to hold their hands up and say that they have made such an utter arse of the whole thing, that leaving cannot sensibly be done without enormous risk to the wellbeing of the country and everyone in it, and so we will be staying in. As you were, chaps.

Blue2701 · 04/09/2018 13:21

So if we have a referendum and the result is remain do we then have a third go to get the best of three?

DarlingNikita · 04/09/2018 13:22

I suppose I thoughr there would be an established process we'd follow

Why on earth would there be? Hardly anyone ever leaves the EU and, as Greenland showed, doing so is a massive rigmarole even for a tiny mono-industry country.

Plus there was all the warnings and analysis from economists, financiers, business and others with a professional interest. It must have been quite hard not to have an inkling that leaving would be a shit show.

Hazardswan · 04/09/2018 13:25

Hi @RowanMumsnet

Thanks for doing the survey is mumsnet going to do anything further with the results? Campaign in some manner or is Justine doing any interviews with the info like she did for free speech on mumsnet?

Chipotlejars · 04/09/2018 13:32

Thank you for doing this Mumsnet! Really interesting to read the full results.

I was going to ask the same question as Hazardswan.

I envisaged jobs, travel and opportunity

Oh dear. Were they jobs in the everlasting cake insudtry, travel on unicorns, and opportunities on the sunlit uplands?

alardi · 04/09/2018 14:25

A lot of Leave voters post here, like surferjet. Why didn't they take part in the poll?

I want a resounding Remain result (at least 80%), 2nd choice = some kind of Leave win. A narrow Remain win would be disaster, very true.

somewheresorted · 04/09/2018 14:58

Really odd... i’m a Mumsnetter and didn’t see this survey... I voted leave and still vote leave..?

Ta1kinpeace · 04/09/2018 15:09

I thoughr there would be an established process we'd follow
What on earth gave you that idea?
Only Greenland has left before.

1tisILeClerc · 04/09/2018 15:14

There is a sort of process but the UK gov have fallen at the first hurdle after invoking A50 by not having a plan for anything, hardly even knowing what the question was.
