MNHQ here: results of our Brexit survey - 71% want another referendum

RowanMumsnet · 04/09/2018 10:35

Hello

We ran a survey on Mumsnet in August-September; more than 2000 of you took part. We were asking about your thoughts about Brexit and whether there should be a second referendum.

We're releasing the results today, and they show that 71% said they wanted another referendum (although 26% don't).

60% of survey respondents said they felt misled by claims made by campaigners in the 2016 referendum, including 41% who said they felt misled by claims made by the Leave campaign and 18% who said they felt misled by claims made by both Remain and Leave.

Summing up, one respondent said 'I envisaged jobs, travel and opportunity, not having a potato delivered by the army.'

You can read all about it here.

Thanks
MNHQ

The survey was a sticky in active somewheresorted so would have had people answering across mumsnet.

StealthPolarBear · 04/09/2018 15:18

Because this is the first time I've been this close to such a political shitstorm in the UK. And I suppose I didn't really think it would be as bad as it is.

1tisILeClerc · 04/09/2018 15:18

'Sticky, in active' sounds like a toddler with a jar of jam to me!

Hazardswan · 04/09/2018 18:40

LOL LeClerc

Any update @mumsnetHQ

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 04/09/2018 18:42

MNEtters profile the typical Remain voter. You need only read the Brexit threads to see the so called liberal pearl clutching

Hazardswan · 04/09/2018 18:50

called sorry to hear you think us discussing access to meds post brexit as pearl clutching given that the gov has asked drugs companies to stockpile 200 meds to last six wks. You may be enraged to know that two insulin companies are stockpiling 14 and 16 weeks worth of insulin.

Don't worry I still don't know if my DP's meds are on the list of 200 to be stocked so I will be doing plenty of so called pearl clutching as I struggle to find out. You can mock me if you like make yourself feel all proud to be British.

I never got an answer to my question about how the survey could genuinely be restricted to those who were/are eligible to vote in referenda in the UK. Anyone could have completed this survey. It's mildly interesting at best and says more about MN than anything else

alardi · 04/09/2018 20:01

Are the Brexiters on MN just very loud? Why did < 20 answer the poll?

18 names here could have answered the poll:
Childrenofthestones , DaisyTwirl, Doubletrouble99, EngTech, FrankUnderwoodsWife, GandalfsWrinklyHat, Gaspodethetalkingdog , Heyduggeesflipflop, llangennith, mellongoose, mummmy2017, Rosstac, RageAgainstTheTagine, sonlypuppyfat, surferjet, usernamealreadytaken, Vicky1990, WhollyFather

Do they only come on MN to talk Brexit? Sock puppets? Who knows.

jasjas1973 · 04/09/2018 21:28

A completely unrepresentative sample of the electorate though - rubbish in, rubbish out

The survey never pretended to be a cross sectional randomised poll conducted by Politico!
In the main its a sample of the sort of people who will be picking up the pieces post Brexit, keeping the family together.

Interesting, but I agree we need some of the raw data - it's hard to know what to make of it without knowing the breakdown between leave voters/remain voters/non-voters etc.

Ihatemycar · 04/09/2018 22:45

No point voting the result is and will be Leave. We just need to know under what terms. I for one can't wait to leave. That's the way democracy works. 17.4 million people decided to leave the EU. I know what I voted for I did my research and made a decision. I'll never change my mind.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 04/09/2018 22:57

Oh for goodness sake, we aren’t going to run out of medicines. You sound hysterical!

CardinalSin · 04/09/2018 23:03

Oh, the shills are back!

Doubletrouble99 · 04/09/2018 23:03

Well I didn't see anything about a survey!! So didn't get a chance to answer.

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/09/2018 23:08

We just need to know under what terms.

Yes - we've got - oh about two months before these need to be defined so the rest of the EU can vote as to whether they're happy with them (gee - talk about taking back control!)

Of course ... it might have been handy to know what these terms were likely to be before we triggered article 50. You know - have an idea what it was we wanted before we started the count down of our own volition.

It would have been even handier to know what these terms would be before we held the referendum. So people knew and understood that they were voting for .. what was it again? 'a potato delivered by the army.'

You know - simple stuff - single market vs not single market and loss of access to our biggest trading partners, open border in Ireland vs restarting a bloody civil war within our own borders ... the little details.

Oh - hey! Maybe when we finally do find out what these terms are going to be - then we can vote to decide whether we actually like it or not. Is the promised potato worth the loss of the peace process, on balance? Are we sure we've really stockpiled enough essential medications to get us through any teething problems? Or should we all just jack it in as a bad job?

A vote on the final terms - when people know exactly what they are getting - sounds like a pretty democratic proposal to me.

If the answer is definitely going to be 'accept the terms and leave' - what have you got to be afraid of? except Christmas dinner 2019 being a FUCKING potato delivered by the army

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/09/2018 23:13

The survey was a sticky in active. Everyone who went to the active page during the time the survey was live had the opportunity to answer. This is not a remainer conspiracy, I'm afraid.

At most, it simply means remainers were paying better attention.

However - they haven't published the break down of remain vs leave respondents. The assumption that remainers swamped the survey, crowding out the leavers and so skewed the results is pure leaver sour grapes fantasy. As far as we know at the moment - it was an even split. Maybe a leaver majority answered. And if more remainers did answer - well, it isn't our fault that you failed to find a sticky in active

CardinalSin · 04/09/2018 23:20

Leavers not seeing the obvious?

Surely not...

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/09/2018 23:21
Grin
Hazardswan · 04/09/2018 23:56

called I didn't say run out of medicines. I said the government has advised drug companies to stockpile 6 weeks worth of 200 medicines. This information is available in the technical notices that the government released. Both the tabloids and broadsheets covered this news. Two companies have decided to stockpile 14 and 16 weeks worth of insulin.

Davros · 05/09/2018 00:03

I only use the Talk app and never look in Active Convos, usually only Threads I'm On and Favourite Topics. I also usually scroll through the barrage of Sponsored threads, questionnaires, Product Tests etc st the top of each section. Pure luck that I noticed it and I think many other people would have missed it

RollerJed · 05/09/2018 00:50

@Hazardswan save your energy replying to called, you'll need it to be hysterical about your dh's meds 🙄

PS I hope your dh's medicine is on the list.

1tisILeClerc · 05/09/2018 08:22

It's a bit rich 'bragging ' about a vote when the Brexit topic has been for over 2 years? and still is relatively hidden in 'Talk'.

surferjet · 05/09/2018 08:35

I didn’t take part in the survey because I didn’t even see it.

I therefore demand a re-run.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 09:32

But to have another referendum almost defeats the purpose of being a democracy. Having another one simply because we were mislead.....welcome to British politics!! We're always mislead.
Wanting another referendum is IMHO because only since the referendum and results have facts become either apparent or widely publicised. The facts and information was there prior to the referendum but very few people chose to seek them.

There was an independent referendum in Scotland a few years ago. We did not vote in favour of becoming independent of the rest of the UK. There was no mention of another referendum, we just have to get on with it- this is democracy.

Suck it up, this is what it is.
