MNHQ here: results of our Brexit survey - 71% want another referendum

RowanMumsnet · 04/09/2018 10:35

Hello

We ran a survey on Mumsnet in August-September; more than 2000 of you took part. We were asking about your thoughts about Brexit and whether there should be a second referendum.

We're releasing the results today, and they show that 71% said they wanted another referendum (although 26% don't).

60% of survey respondents said they felt misled by claims made by campaigners in the 2016 referendum, including 41% who said they felt misled by claims made by the Leave campaign and 18% who said they felt misled by claims made by both Remain and Leave.

Summing up, one respondent said 'I envisaged jobs, travel and opportunity, not having a potato delivered by the army.'

You can read all about it here.

Thanks
MNHQ

Lol, have you seen the posts on the GM thread?
You’d think Jesus was turning up tonight.
So yes, it’s a new religion for both camps.

1tisILeClerc · 06/09/2018 18:21

if JRM, an arch Brexiteer says that the 'benefits' of Brexit may not bear fruit for 50 years surely you need to question this?

DarlingNikita · 06/09/2018 18:24

surfer, I agree some of the Gina Miller comments are quite sycophantic.

Are you thinking of asking/could you be persuaded to ask her something? Genuine question –I'd like to hear what she has to say to sceptics/Leavers.

pennycarbonara · 06/09/2018 18:29

The data doesn't indicate what percentage of total respondents didn't vote in the referendum. It makes it look as if all respondents voted, but then shows a filter question that combines leave voters and non-voters, for some reason.

Chickenkatsu · 06/09/2018 18:40

You’ve done nothing but try & frustate the will of the people .

You'll notice that this phrase isn't used by leavers anymore as the majority of people favour remain over no deal.

Hazardswan · 06/09/2018 18:55

Still with the mud slinging?

I don't get at this point with the 'Operation Yellowhammer' and the technical notices why people are still divided by who voted what, surely it's about making sure whatever happens everyone is well fed, medicated, housed and so on. But nooo Leavers must remain fanatical and remainers must be labelled remoaners.

Buteo · 06/09/2018 19:44

In fact things are getting worse, & remainers are the ones to blame in my opinion.

Nothing to do with the ignorance and incompetence of the Government then?

Cobblersandhogwash · 06/09/2018 19:48

Nothing is more democratic than voting on the details of the deal. The actual facts.

If it's the will of the people to still leave then what's to be afraid of?

It's only democracy. It didn't stop in June.

Did Leavers vote for no deal? Did they vote for a Canada++ type deal? Norway type deal? Who knows?

The reality of the situation we face must be voted on. Not just projections by either camp.

SunnyInGrimsby · 06/09/2018 19:57

I don't want another referendum and neither does most of the country.

We can't keep having referendums until we get the 'right' result.

I suspect that the views of Mumsnet are not representative of most of the country.

70% of Mumsnet users own an aga or wood-burning stove but is this representative of the nation? Possibly not. Smile

Cobblersandhogwash · 06/09/2018 20:21

It's not about the right result.

It's about voting on the details of the deal. One would have to be a fool to not want to know the details of any deal that affects our economy.

Unless you would rather crash out without any deal? Which would be even more foolish.

Cobblersandhogwash · 06/09/2018 20:22

And how do you know the rest of the country doesn't want another referendum? Do tell your sources?

Buteo · 06/09/2018 21:01

And 73.6% of statistics are fabricated Hmm

alardi · 06/09/2018 22:55

I don't want another referendum but I'd feel better if we had another one & got the same result as 2016.

Even better would be a 80% Remain result, I highly doubt I'll get that, but at least I can settle for going to hell in handbasket if I know this really is what most people wanted. The huge risk is a narrow Remain victory, that would be a disaster. There is no good choice, sigh.

My doubts arise because of all the people who spoke too media & said loudly end of June 2016 that they never actually wanted to Brexit, they deeply regretted their Leave vote. Paid crisis actors or actually sincere? How can I be sure? It's all the people who said before the vote "How can I choose, I feel like I don't know what I'm voting for or against!" I think more people understand better in 2018 what they are voting for or against.

Why are Leave so afraid they'll lose this vote, what are they so afraid of?

Cobblersandhogwash · 06/09/2018 23:06

They are afraid of more democracy.

Because they will lose.

Because it's not about the will of the people.

It's about a cult of hating the EU so much they want us to leave it no matter what the cost.

Glaciferous · 06/09/2018 23:10

Why are Leave so afraid they'll lose this vote, what are they so afraid of?

If there was another vote, they'd lose and that's what they're afraid of. Because people are beginning to realise what it really means and are starting to understand the impact on jobs, family finances,, opportunities etc. So that is the bare truth of it. There are, unfortunately, some people who think it's more important to win than to have a good outcome.

We need to have another referendum because this is a big step and we have to be sure that we are doing what people actually want to happen and not something imposed from outside (like no deal, which seems to be incredibly damaging for everyone).

surferjet · 07/09/2018 07:08

Hi,
Thank you for your question.
Sorry for late reply.
No, I wasn’t tempted as it was a remainers thread to show their love & devotion to their idol. I’m not a fan but respect other people are. I’m waiting for a prominent leaver to do a web chat, I’d love to talk to Boris or Nigel.

Btw. I love you.
& remember to plant a tree & sit in the shade, & go low when others go high ( or something )
❤️💕

It did turn into a bit of a love fest. I think that that was in a way fine, as she's survived so much nastiness. It's a shame we didn't have time for more questions, but she at least did get to address the real threats to the British democracy we have had so far which will go if brexit goes ahead. Brexit is being used to steam roller in mass powers to the executive and less power to voters sadly and scarily.

surfer Smile and Wine for later if the brexit arms re opens.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 07/09/2018 08:30

I felt misled by the remain campaign! I unfortunately voted remain, but with hindsight I really wish I’d voted leave.

This survey is irrelevant, though. There won’t be another referendum. You can’t just have another vote because you don’t like the results of the first one.

10degreestostarboard · 07/09/2018 09:19

What todo,

Go careful there - the lovely folks on this thread who are adamant remainers won’t appreciate your about turn on your remain vote.

Don’t you realise we simply must stay in the eu and that Anything Else Simply Won’t Do?

I find it all very curious - I was faced with a binary choice in the referendum and my leave vote was clear: an absolute clean break from the eu.

But others will suggest I didn’t apparently know what I was voting for. Bless them.

Glaciferous · 07/09/2018 09:33

@WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue, could you explain what made you change your mind? I am genuinely interested.

1tisILeClerc · 07/09/2018 09:41

Leavers have voted for price hikes, job losses, reduced public spending and more difficulty and cost if they want to travel out of the UK.
If that is what 'floats your boat' then good for you.
You don't have to believe me, even the 'tabloids' are reporting this now.

10degreestostarboard · 07/09/2018 09:48

Leclerc

Given that we haven’t actually left the eu yet - your statement is a mix of conjecture, presupposition with a healthy dollop of your own prejudice.

The sky will not fall in. Will there be changes and challenges? Of course there will. But remember - according to phillip Hammond we should already be something akin to Venezuela...

Hazardswan · 07/09/2018 09:50

To be fair it's a bit hard to believe anyone who is proud to be British would willingly vote to put the most vulnerable brits at risk. I don't want to believe anyone would be so detached from their humanity, so yeah I choose to believe leavers didn't know what they were voting for because I like to believe the best in people.

CardinalSin · 07/09/2018 09:51

Surfer wasn't tempted because she knew she wouldn't be able to come up with a question that wouldn't be laughed at, as she only posts in Daily Heil quotes.

CardinalSin · 07/09/2018 09:52

10Degrees - we already have price hikes, job losses, reduced public spending, and more difficulty and cost in travelling out of the UK is literally an inevitable consequence of Brexit. It's hardly conjecture!
