Last thread opener, it was all about the government buzz word being shown to listen at every opportunity.

Now transition is creeping in as people realise that no we can't just do a settlement, arrange a new trade deal with the EU and have a whole host of other deals in place in two years.

Who'd have thought.

We will be getting Brexit because we give in to threats of terrorism. Not quite getting how that takes back control.

But Brexit will be good. It will be glorious. And in the long term we will be better off for it.

I just listened to about 45 minutes of David Davis's evidence to the Lords EU committee on Brexit. That man uses lots of annoying fill words which makes him very hard to follow. This is what he said on transition. I have edited his waffle into a concise version below.

^"What has been conflated, I think, a little bit, has been the approach to the implementation stage, or the transition phase - use the phrase you like. Yes, I believe we can get a free trade negotiation concluded, and a customs agreement negotiation concluded, in the period. What will be much more difficult, however, is to get all the practical implementations that go with it. Not so much for us; it will be quite tough to get our customs in the right place in two years, but it’s doable. But to get the French customs in the same place in two years, or the Belgian or the Dutch customs, I think is a different issue. That’s why a transitional period [may be necessary.]
So it’s a whole series of practicalities. And what people are doing, I think, is misinterpreting a statement saying ‘We might have to do something in [the] transition period’ as being an abandonment of the original aim."


[The approach to the transition phase has been conflated. We can get a free trade and a customs agreement negotiation concluded in the two year period. It will be difficult to get all the practical implementations concluded within two year, for example customs. We can fo it, but to get the French, Belgian or the Dutch customs sorted may require a transitional period.

Peregrina - well, a week's a long time in politics so....

So David Davis illustrated both arrogant English superiority in that he says "we can do it in the timescale but the other countries can't so we might need a transition period" and rose-tinted spectacles in that the government still hasn't done any preparatory work for the customs procedures required at the ports.

Maybe there is an obvious problem why, apart from the one about the government being clueless. I'll spell out why British politicians might not want to talk about joining a new scheme.

lonely I read the summary of DD's whafflings this morning on line and thought "I wonder whether all those manufacturers who rely on just-in-time cross-border supply chains are reading this. And I wonder whether they are having the numbers crunched on costs of delays and tariffs versus costs of moving production out of the UK and/or no longer sourcing supplies from the UK."

If they haven't already done so, of course.
