Brexit

Westministenders: Transition

RedToothBrush · 11/07/2017 22:02

Last thread opener, it was all about the government buzz word being shown to listen at every opportunity.

Now transition is creeping in as people realise that no we can't just do a settlement, arrange a new trade deal with the EU and have a whole host of other deals in place in two years.

Who'd have thought.

We will be getting Brexit because we give in to threats of terrorism. Not quite getting how that takes back control.

But Brexit will be good. It will be glorious. And in the long term we will be better off for it.

Er ok.

Thank you Bigly, that makes sense to me and I had neglected to consider the vitriol Corbyn would have received if he allowed an A50 free vote.

I do not expect Labour to openly reject Brexit just now at all, I wondered I was logical to consider that Corbyn in particular was avoiding commitment to a position or whether I was just being hopeful.

I don't see how soft Brexit is possible personally. From what I can tell the EU position seems to be all or nothing which is fair enough.

Filled me with confidence

Same with interview by Nick Robinson on Today. More waffle and word soup. Robinson taking him apart on the government's alleged desire to listen and yet in response to every alternative view of Brexit from William Hague, the NAO and Radiographers, Baker says 'they are wrong'.

Lots of 'constructively and respectively' but no light.

There is a sense of being Cnut (no misspelling) about Brexit, and having to stake a fucking throne on the beach to show the Barmy Brexit Brigade that no matter what "the will of the people is" it can't trump nature. Or science.

That's not to say membership of the EU is by any means natural or ordained. Just that the current lack of plans for leaving are starting to look like all sorts of impossible.

I wonder if Brexiteers have an account at Milliways ? (And if anyone gets that reference, I'm amongst my people Smile )

I love rolling news ...

early this morning, the BBC News front page said

"Ministers plead with MPs to support the Great Repeal Bill"

Now it says

"Ministers urge co-operation ..."

So:

  1. Why the change ?
  2. Who ordered it ?

While they're at it, they could also urge patriotism, pulling together, positive thinking, etc etc. After all, we've been assured for the past year that this is all we need for Brexit to be a success.

This is a remarkable article. I don't know if they are twisting her report. If not, it is bizarre to blame the EU for the UK gov't's stance. The EU want rights to remain the same for those EU citizens wherever they are in the EU. It is the UK gov't who won't reciprocate and are making it a point for negotiation.

Oh, she has written to Davis for clarification on UK's stance. Was a bit previous issuing that report then. When the UK are the one's who are making it a negotiation point.

"Ms Longfield said she had spoken with children who were shocked to discover Brexit might affect them, even though they were “born and brought up in Britain”.

Although they may be entitled to citizenship, their parents might not – and, in any case, they face paperwork, confusion and having to pay almost £1,000."

How she is pinning this on the EU is a mystery to me. Do they run the UK home office?

I saw that article, cailleach. I hope she has been misrepresented because if not she is yet another Brexit numpty. The EU want everyone to keep their current rights. It's Treeza And The Brexiteers who are changing the rules.

Didn't you know the EU is responsible for all decisions on the admin and running of the country. When your local council failed to fix the pot hole outside your house, that was because the EU specifically banned all pot hole fixing in your area. FACT. The requirement to write the queens speech on goatskin, which resulted in the delay was caused by the EUs secret agenda to subsidise the goat market by insisting that all Government documents are written on velum. FACT. The extra charge the local bakery adds to wedding cakes in comparison to exactly the same cake purchased for a birthday party is because the EU hates weddings and wants to ruin all your joy! Calleach: totally agree. Blaming the EU for UK immigration laws is incredible. I know many EU couples in that situation. A couple of Italians who set up a business 7 years ago. They cannot get permanent residency because difficult to prove regular income for a 5 year continuous window plus no private health insurance. They had a baby one year ago so baby , although born at St. Mary's, cannot get a British passport. I really cannot understand how this is the EU's fault!!!

I am reading a book about brexit (repeating myself)

In it the author says that a news story would appear , they would get angry that it was incorrect and ring the news group and then the later 'edition' would be a bit different

Did anyone hear the US republican arsehole on BBC R4 before 8 ?

It seems to be a new direction both the UK and US have gone off on.

Just dismiss everything- don't acknowledge that anyone else has a point, no matter what part they play.

If we're not careful, we will get politicians going on TV telling us that even though a court ruling says one thing, it's wrong, so we'll just ignore it.

The interview in question was about the actions of Trump Jnr. When it was pointed out that it was illegal under US law for a foreign power to provide assistance to a US campaign the interviewee basically said "no it's not".

I was reminded of the Monty Python Black Knight ....

I'm sure they're doing this all on the same day so none of us have time to write anniversary pieces about how dreadful May has been.

Unprecedented UK/Europe Pharma warning: "severe disruption" in "supply of life saving medicines" in unorderly Brexit
t.co/wkPdLNea1v
... the letter is aimed at both Davis & Barnier after EU's memo on EMA (see my tweets: twitter.com/faisalislam/status/881978227002134528 … )
...paragraph signed by all the major UK/ European Pharma business groupings on "severe disruption" to supply chains from "unorderly" Brexit
..calls for Brexit "implementation period" to avoid "unintended consequences on availability of medicines"...accepts jobs "transfer" to EU27
..thats important for UK's world beating pharma industry - in any event some transfer of activity, supply chains & personnel from UK to EU27
...what letter argues is that the supply impact on medicines can be mitigated with a min 2-3 yr transition period - only 1 year to negotiate

Leaving SM + No Deal>Bad Deal should have triggered rapid action on creating our own regulatory agencies. I have seen no sign of such action

Poor Theresa, she didn't see it coming.

She completely misread the situation. Maybe we should take this 'little tear' as a sign of her humanity and let her just get on with brexit, eh?

Paininthe ear - on all of these Westministenders threads we have been discussing what will happen to all types of goods when the hard borders appear at our ports. The govt have done absolutely nothing, and it wouldn't be a surprise to me if there is absolute chaos on the 20th March 2019 or whenever the actual date we leave the EU is.

All they have been doing is making sound bites and not making any kind of preparations.

Shambolic.
