Brexit

Westministenders: Transition

RedToothBrush · 11/07/2017 22:02

Last thread opener, it was all about the government buzz word being shown to listen at every opportunity.

Now transition is creeping in as people realise that no we can't just do a settlement, arrange a new trade deal with the EU and have a whole host of other deals in place in two years.

Who'd have thought.

We will be getting Brexit because we give in to threats of terrorism. Not quite getting how that takes back control.

But Brexit will be good. It will be glorious. And in the long term we will be better off for it.

Er ok.

Well, at least there's some good news Smile

Only joking - it's another car crash in the name of Brexit ...

Plans by HMRC to overhaul the clunky IT system underpinning £34bn in tax at the border may not be complete before Brexit, the government's spending watchdog has warned today.

%The National Audit Office said there is a risk that HMRC will not have the full functionality and scope of the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) in place by March 2019 – when the UK plans to leave the EU. It said there is "still a significant amount of work to complete".

(contd)

Given the NAO hardly has a stellar record when it comes to project governance (remember they had to "reset" Universal Credit, as there was no way to express how far behind it was, even in doublespeak) I would take it as a given this system will not be ready or fit for purpose or on budget.

Indeed, LH. It is very hard to feel sorry for her - is that what she wants ? Maybe she wants us to think she is human and not a bot.

All they have been doing is making sound bites and not making any kind of preparations.

Why would they need to prepare anything? As we have seen on here and other social media, most Leavers are totally thrilled with how things are going - as far as they're concerned, the Sunlit Uplands are right on target for We, The Greatest People of All Time.

And if they even acknowledge any little clouds on the horizon, these are all the fault of NonBeLeavers, the EUSSR, traitors, negative thinkers, bullies and assorted ne'er-do-wells.

I don't think that people understand the timescale in building new IT functionality -
Uncertainty due to the unknown outcome of the UK/EU negotiations is also affecting the programme, it said. "No changes have yet been made to the scope of the CDS programme following the UK’s decision to leave the EU," it said.

It could take years before the scope is changed and tested to make sure it works.

We will be a laughing stock and this will also hold up essential goods and services at the borders.

It gets even more ridiculous by the day!

But apparently because we are the only EU country in 'Five Eyes' we will be ok! (according to the other thread)

Can someone unpick the logic behind that please because I'm not even beginning to grasp how that impacts how we deal with this shitshow?

Indeed, LH. It is very hard to feel sorry for her - is that what she wants ? Maybe she wants us to think she is human and not a bot.

I reserve my sorrow for the survivors of Grenfell, for the countless lives ruined by faux "austerity", for the untold lives blighted by needless poverty and ignorance. For the people who have put their whole lives into the UK to be told - quite openly - to "fuck off back home". For the old person mentioned somewhere a while back who is now afraid they can't be buried alongside their departed wife. For the children whose lives will be scarred with a sense their families were expelled from the UK.

if there are 60,000,000 in the UK, I could probably feel sorry for 59,999,999 of them before I felt sorry for a privileged narcissistic, patronising, ignorant, xenophobic hypocrite like Theresa May.

How will the European Arrest Warrant work if the UK refuses to acknowledge the ECJ ?

Hint: it won't.

Paininthe ear - Currently when goods arrive into the UK from the EU they are not subject to particular control, as we freely allow entry and exit and there are no tariffs to pay.

Once we leave the EU all goods and services from the EU will be subject to customs duty and tariffs and so suppliers will need to provide paperwork and pay duties in order to be allowed to enter.

This will need to be prepared for as huge amount of our imports come in from the EU. Infrastructure will be necessary - somewhere to put all the lorries while they are checked, and as LH's link shows, the IT system is being upgraded but not to yet include countries in the EU which currently don't need to be included as there are no duties, but may have to after Brexit.

So while Theresa there is having a little cry that she is a failure, maybe she should be getting on with the job of preparing for this ?

When I worked for a company that did a lot of exporting to EU and non EU countries, even with countries like Switz, and Turkey which have customs agreements with the EU, goods could sit at ports/ borders waiting for ages if even a tiny bit of the paperwork associated was not correct. This costs a lot of money to the companies - increased admin costs, lost sales of the stuff stuck and also lost future sales to customers who were not happy that their shipments didn't arrive as expected so went elsewhere in future.

It will take more than the 21 months we now have to make this a seamless transition, and while other countries in the EU may be able to source things we export a lot of e.g. cars from other EU countries, we will see shortages and higher prices in the UK as a result. (Never mind the inflation we are currently seeing because of the terrible exchange rates).

Mofd I meant the logic of being in 5 eyes preventing us experiencing the fallout of Brexit but actually your explanation about imports and tarriffs was hugely helpful too Flowers

I too could really use a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.

Perhaps we could export Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters ready-made in "heritage" bottles. Or cans of an achingly trendy design.

It's worse than that.

Despite all the Bertie Big Bollocks from BoJo, the EU (and UK) are not allowed under WTO regulations (remember the "no deal" backstop ?) to say "oh, we'll just wave goods from EU/UK through".

They have to go through a customs process.

(Which is obvious really. Otherwise the UK/EU will have cooked up an unfair trade deal to the detriment of other nations).

Lol Pain, sorry Blush. I have no idea about 'Five Eyes' - I'd never heard of it but I think it is something to do with pooling security resources with the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Doesn't seem to be of much use dealing with home grown terror though.

No sympathy at all for May. She wanted to crush the saboteurs opposition. I get her ego was damaged and she was upset by a very public humiliation but otherwise crying seems very self indulgent and totally lacking in humility.

I haven't listened to the interview but the news reports don't give any indication she paused and wondered what the result was telling her about her premiership, her government and Brexit. That people might be saying 'hang on - let's do things a bit differently'. No, she pretends it's all ok and carries on implying that is the strong thing to do. She's completely out of touch and much more concerned about her political power than she is about the country's future.
