Boris outmaneovered. Et tu Gove & Corbyn? The Westministenders Hunger Games Continues

RedToothBrush · 01/07/2016 12:08

Following the Machiavellian Govian shambles? Utterly gobsmacked at the Labour clusterfuck?

Who will strike next?

Who will the shadowy hand of Osborne back?
Can Gove be launched back into space and back to the planet he came from?
Can May save the country from almost certain doom?
Will Leadsom patronise us all to death (whilst silently stabbing people in the back with a sweet smile)?
Can Johnson make a decision he can stick to, and can we persuade him to give up being a politician?
Will Steven Crabb get rid of that god awful beard?

Will Corbyn shoot himself in the other foot?
Will Angela Eagle get a spine and just stand?
Who the fuck is Owen Smith?
Will the Blairites be foiled and damned?
Are momentum a bunch of thugs or a force for a better, for the people?

Will Farage disappear back under his rock?
Will people wake up to Arron Banks?
What will Dominic Cummings destroy next?

Have we seen a coup d'état?
How do we improve democracy and representation?

All these questions and more.
Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

Liam Fox leaves the room after his appearance at the hustings saying: "I enjoyed it." Asked about an outbreak of laughter in the room during his pitch, he said: "You'll have to ask them about that."

May restated her position on EU nationals at Conservative hustings

Theresa May left the hustings room saying her speech was "enjoyable".

A spokesman said in her introduction she addressed the issue around EU citizens currently living in the UK - restating the position she has already set out.

She also stressed her track record as home secretary, and her belief that the country made its decision in the referendum - and that must be enacted - but there was also a manifesto to deliver.

And Mrs May reiterated her belief that there should be no general election before 2020, and again insisted she would not look to invoke Article 50 before the end of the year.

This is horrible

How is this happening

Someone make it stop please

rookiemere · 04/07/2016 18:56

Like I said - someone is pulling the strings from on high chalalala. Perhaps May looks like she can't be pushed around enough.

DoinItFine · 04/07/2016 18:57

The Home Secretary doesn't have the power to just make up immigration law as she goes along.

Making a commitment not to deport people who moved here on yhe understanding that they would have leave to stay and build their lives here is not "msking up immigration law as she goes along".

Hmm

It is vanishingly unlikely she will be able to deport any of them.

Using human lives as bargaining chips makes the UK position look weak, cruel, and ridiculous.

You would be starting your negotiations in a weak.position if that's where you start.

Particularly against an EU that is threatening to unilaterally give all your citizens access to EU citizenship.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 19:01

Are they, Doitfine? I haven't seen that mentioned re the EU and giving British nationals citizenship. Not a surprising move on their part, I don't think.

The world is watching, after all. Something our own government seem to be forgetting.

Showmethewaytogohome · 04/07/2016 19:04

Chalala FFS not again. Taxi!!!!

thecatfromjapan · 04/07/2016 19:16

We really need everyone with a Conservative MP to write and say: 'Not Gove.' He is, frankly, part of a criminally irresponsible coterie, with un-disclosed interests, and is unfit to govern.

He should have no credibity.

howabout · 04/07/2016 19:20

Chalala that is very unsurpising. The Conservative vote was 55(?)% Brexit so it seems highly likely they would prefer AL to TM. Also it is hard to argue the referendum did not at the very least give a mandate for change. The TM offer seems to be status quo. This may play well with cabinet ministers looking to stay in post especially but the complete opposite elsewhere. Is no-one else noticing all the TM / Gove attempts to jointly rehabilitate GO? I am starting to think Gove did what he did hoping TM gets elected and he steps back into his role as power behind the throne.

GingerIvy · 04/07/2016 19:21

My Conservative MP doesn't really care what the general public have to say unless of course they agree with him.Hmm

GingerIvy · 04/07/2016 19:23

How much support do each of the Tory leadership contenders have?

Here are the latest figures - from 17:30 BST today - on the backing from Conservative MPs for the five horses in the leadership race:

Theresa May: 115
Andrea Leadsom: 39
Michael Gove: 26
Stephen Crabb: 23
Liam Fox: 9
That compares with the following figures from Friday:

May: 96
Leadsom: 21
Gove: 18
Crabb: 22
Fox: 10

Well that makes sense really, I suppose.

So looking forward to having Brexits biggest headbanging idiot running the country.

Chalalala · 04/07/2016 20:18

My only comfort is that when they run the country into a wall, they won't be able to say that it was all the Remainers' fault.

It's not much comfort, but it's something.

HalleLouja · 04/07/2016 20:20

Who knew we all would be supporting May?

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2016 20:21

Fox has ONE in.
Gove has FOUR in.
Crabb has FOUR out. The rest appear to be in.
May has NINETEEN out. The rest appear to be in.

I make out of those who are yet to declare, 54 are out.

So that seems to have healed the split in the Tory party well then....

OP posts:
SwedishEdith · 04/07/2016 20:22

Crabb saying some interesting things

Duncan Weldon tweets
"Crabb £100bn infra growth fund funded by long term gilts is a very, very good idea. Interesting that Javid backs it. The drys want to borrow"

Usual caveats of "All of these people are horrible" apply.

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2016 20:23

You might want to consider that 43% of Tory voters, voted remain and the rest leave if this does go to the wider membership.

I would have thought May will get around 2/3 of the MP by the end. Whether this is enough to stop it going to the wider membership I doubt tbh...

But we shall see.

OP posts:
HalleLouja · 04/07/2016 20:24

So 39 plus 54 (if she gets them all which she probably won't some may go to Gove or May) makes 93.

I'm so morally confused I don't even know who I want.

InShockReally · 04/07/2016 20:40

This recap made me laugh (A hollow, desperate and short sort of laugh to be sure. But still.)

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:40

The trouble with having a hardcore Brexiter at the helm is that 48% of the electorate will feel entirely unrepresented, whereas under a more moderate May, I think things will become calmer on a social level.

can't believe I just typed May and more moderate in the same sentence without irony

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2016 20:42

It will be Leadsom v May I am fairly sure.
I would hazard a guess at Leadsom not getting a single remain MP.
I would also say that May will seriously struggle to win it at Membership level and I don't think she can see Leadsom off enough before then as Leadsom will be determined to go to the party as she knows she has a good chance with that.

head in hands

We shall see.

I HOPE I'm wrong again, and May can persuade a good number of them to her, then get all Crabb's lot and hopefully some of Gove's on the basis of her experience but I think this is going to go straight down the line of the referendum by the look if it.

Its fucking ridiculous.

Leadsom has not got a clue and will be eaten alive by the EU.
