Boris outmaneovered. Et tu Gove & Corbyn? The Westministenders Hunger Games Continues

RedToothBrush · 01/07/2016 12:08

Following the Machiavellian Govian shambles? Utterly gobsmacked at the Labour clusterfuck?

Who will strike next?

Who will the shadowy hand of Osborne back?
Can Gove be launched back into space and back to the planet he came from?
Can May save the country from almost certain doom?
Will Leadsom patronise us all to death (whilst silently stabbing people in the back with a sweet smile)?
Can Johnson make a decision he can stick to, and can we persuade him to give up being a politician?
Will Steven Crabb get rid of that god awful beard?

Will Corbyn shoot himself in the other foot?
Will Angela Eagle get a spine and just stand?
Who the fuck is Owen Smith?
Will the Blairites be foiled and damned?
Are momentum a bunch of thugs or a force for a better, for the people?

Will Farage disappear back under his rock?
Will people wake up to Arron Banks?
What will Dominic Cummings destroy next?

Have we seen a coup d'état?
How do we improve democracy and representation?

All these questions and more.
Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

it speaks to both her good points and bad points. She's a cold heartless human rights denier, but at least she's honest about it I guess?

NigellasGuest · 04/07/2016 16:38

DH's mother, no longer with us, was Italian. Could he get Italian nationality?

nauticant · 04/07/2016 16:44

but at least she's honest about it I guess

Are you trying to tell me that someone she head out into the hurricane of dishonesty we've experienced over the past few months and put forward honesty? Are you quite mad?

SugarPlumTree · 04/07/2016 16:46

I think he can get it by descent NigellasGuest .

nauticant · 04/07/2016 16:46

she head out = should head out

Blimey, my checking skills are woeful today. Good job I'm avoiding doing any work.

SugarPlumTree · 04/07/2016 16:47

And then once he has that, any DC you have could have it too. Google 'Italian nationality by descent' and have a read through.

ReggaeShark · 04/07/2016 16:49

MIL is Belgian. DH can't get Belgian citizenship (in order to get it for DS) as you have to have a Belgian FATHER (unless you're illegitimate and only your mother claims parentage). WTAF? Needs updating or what? Shock

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2016 16:49

NigellasGuest it looks like it from that bbc article.

Re Jeremy Corbin:
***
He's also asked how he has the mobile number of the activist whose comments made MP Ruth Smeeth cry last week. Mr Corbyn says he's well known in the Labour movement in London, and he's been an anti-racism activist for 30 years. He adds that the activist's remarks to Ms Smeeth were not "right, appropriate or helpful".

Put to him by Vicky Atkins that he has a lot of contact with people who have "unpleasant views about Jewish people and Israel", Mr Corbyn says he doesn't accept that.

"I know a very large number of people in many anti-racist organisations, human rights organisations. I've spent my whole life on these issues."
**

Now this seems a bit odd. He has contact with UKIP members too, they ALL do, as is necessary to some extent in government. So when, may I ask, will they be grilling Gove over his contacts?

I'm beginning to feel sorry for Corbyn. This is starting to look like a real witch hunt IMO.

GingerIvy · 04/07/2016 16:57

And Hmm to this.

George Osborne
BBC
Answering John McDonnell's urgent question, Chancellor George Osborne says given that forecast growth has been cut from 2% to 0.4%, the "target for a surplus is unlikely to be achieved in 2019-20".

Mr Osborne says he was always explicit that in the event of a "significant negative shock" the fiscal rules would change.

The UK must now "broadcast loud and clear that Britain remains the best place in the world to do business".

"In my view the strongest signal we could send the world that Britain is ready," he adds, would be to "cut corporation tax still further".

NigellasGuest · 04/07/2016 17:00

thanks everyone - going to look into this!

DoinItFine · 04/07/2016 17:03

She is the Home Secretary now.

If she wanted to, she could commit to EU citizens already in the country not being forced to leave.

That should not be left as an open question for a year.

It could be agreed within days given that even the Brexiters would support it.

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2016 17:04

Tory MPs tally update:
May 120;
Leadsom 37;

I wouldn't dare! Merely observing here...

It's an interesting choice. Would I rather have May, who is honest about being awful, or Leadsom, who is probably equally awful but puts on a nice grandmotherly front?

GingerIvy · 04/07/2016 17:13

I note that Osborne sidestepped that quite neatly. Expect more austerity cuts to welfare then?

SNP Treasury Spokesman Stewart Hosie
BBC
SNP Treasury spokesman Stewart Hosie calls on the chancellor to "rule out any plans to claw back potential losses in revenue... through further attacks on the welfare budget".

George Osborne replies that he thought it was the SNP's policy "to cut corporation tax" given they had campaigned on it during the independence referendum.

He notes that Scotland is still able to cut corporation tax while remaining in the UK thanks to recent changes.

rookiemere · 04/07/2016 17:16

I think the issue here is if you try to find a senior politician who has at no point in their career put political expediency above doing the right and honourable thing, you end up with Jeremy Corbyn and we can all see how well that's turned out.

Given as we have very few bargaining chips to negotiate with the EU, whilst I may not like what May has said, she's quite right to keep those few ones we do have on the table. And yes I do understand that it's peoples lives at stake here, as it was during the referendum.

Anyway the referendum has made me very suspicious, with the number of votes outstanding it's not certain that May will end up in pole position.

NotDavidTennant · 04/07/2016 17:16

"If she wanted to, she could commit to EU citizens already in the country not being forced to leave."

Last time I checked we live in a parliamentary democracy. The Home Secretary doesn't have the power to just make up immigration law as she goes along.

missmoon · 04/07/2016 17:22

I find myself in the horrible position of desperately hoping that Teresa May wins this, while also finding her comments abhorrent :(

GingerIvy · 04/07/2016 17:24

They seem to be telling Corbyn that Momentum needs to be shut down, saying it's a party within a party. Is this the MPs trying to find a back door into dragging Corbyn out??

caitlinohara · 04/07/2016 17:27

May was awesome standing up to the police, and I admire her for that immensely. I think she is brave, but that may be her only redeeming feature for all I know. I think Leadsom may have more compassion, but frankly Idi Amin probably had more compassion than May...

rookiemere · 04/07/2016 17:39

Me too missmoon for a couple for a couple of reasons.

First if someone else gets it, it seems likely to be down to the shadowy influence of someone external which has even more worrying implications for British politics.

Secondly I may not agree with all/most/any of what she has said or done in the past, but I feel she would at least not embarrass us in public as PM and would be an appropriate head to negotiate with the EU on terms.

MissMargie · 04/07/2016 17:58

She did stand up to the police but I feel she is pretty vicious in her stance.
Half the current police were in nappies when Damilola was stabbed or Hillsborough happened. They lay their lives on the line every day. She was really vicious at their conference - it seemed uncalled for.

The reason these things hadn't been sorted was corrupt police but also non effective governments standing by. Hillsborough took 25 years to sort out, I feel govs are to blame too.

She has been pretty hard on fire officers too. I don't see the need for it, make changes, don't slate them, it hardly inspires loyalty.

"If she wanted to, she could commit to EU citizens already in the country not being forced to leave."

Seem it's the same person that has been implementing the last immigrations laws that include a minimum of earning in the year etc etc I somehow very much doubt that.
Rather I would expect them to just fit in that policy already in place.
