Corbyn still hanging in there

I actually quite admire that. Hanging tough. I think it shows a sharp contrast to Cameron who can't get out of things soon enough.

Could Corbyn actually be the next PM?

Quick question: has anyone tried to join up as a Labour supporter (for £25)? I am not a member of any union and only joined the LP a few days ago, I get the impression I don't qualify.

Re the abuse, you only have to look at Twitter and FB for hundreds of examples of the vicious, tribal nature of some of the Corbyn following. If they are prepared to publish the personal abuse on a public forum I'm sure many won't hesitate to also address it directly to specific MPs deemed 'traitors'.

Stephen Kinnock on Ch 4 News last night described the stream of hatred he had personally been subjected to, and commented that he now had the 'skin of a rhino' as he was so used to it.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/07/2016 09:25

The full timetable etc will be available either today or tomorrow.

Officially the leadership contest doesn't start until Thursday.

GlassCircles · 13/07/2016 09:26

I joined a few days ago too to vote against Corbyn, but it looks like I'm now not eligible. What a shambles.

megletthesecond · 13/07/2016 09:28

Isn't David Milliband lined up for something with Hillary Clinton? He won't be back, sadly.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/07/2016 09:50

Glass Unite are offering £2 membership for a vote Wink

JugglingFromHereToThere · 13/07/2016 09:57

Ooh, that sounds good piglet - I'd like to be in a union anyway

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/07/2016 10:14

Worth keeping an eye out. I think they are tying it up with their community membership.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/07/2016 10:16

It's all over twitter.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 13/07/2016 10:33

MP's report bullying

Earlier reports of bullying

MP's receiving death threats to MP's not supporting Corbyn

And there is plenty more on Twitter and Google

Jess Phillips should keep quiet about the rape threats she has received Hmm thankfully it has opened up a discussion on how many female MP's do receive such threats

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/07/2016 12:13

According to the Guardian, the NEC have voted that JC is "not subject to the rule that forces candidates to show they have the backing of 20% of the party’s MPs and MEP" which presumably means he doesn't need to show support from the 50-odd MPs previously mentioned?

Call me dense, but what I really don't get is how this can possibly be made to work if someone who the PLP can't work with is re-elected as leader? Just what the hell would happen then ... ?? Confused

lalalonglegs · 13/07/2016 12:44

Well, indeed, Puzzled. The NEC had the choice of (a) keeping Corbyn off the ballot and facing possible legal action and, if that failed, a potential civil war among members (b) allowing him on the ballot and hoping like mad that he is ousted democratically and that the party rallies behind the new leader (c) allowing him on the ballot, anticipating a Corbyn win and then trying to stop a split after that.

It's not a great bunch of choices really, is it Sad? To be honest, as much as I'd like to see a new leader, I do think, given the way the rules were written, it would have been immoral to keep him off the ballot so we'll just have to see how this plays out. If he gets less than 50% of the vote and the people who vote for Eagle give Smith their second vote and vice versa and enough Corbynistas specify a second vote, then he may well go. But it's not going to be a very edifying process.

GlassCircles · 13/07/2016 13:35

No I think he had to go on the ballot one way or another really. Can you imagine the St Golden Jeremy the Martyr situation if he'd been kept off - it would not have been pleasant.

To be honest I don't hold out a lot of hope for the Labour party at all now really.

megletthesecond · 13/07/2016 13:55

Me neither glass. I can't see how they can climb out of the mess.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/07/2016 14:04

If you can try and find the #wato tweets or google World at One. An NEC member giving their account of what happened yesterday.

NorthorSouth · 13/07/2016 15:18

The full interview with Johanna Baxter that Piglet refers to above is available on the BBC website now if anyone is interested.

lalalonglegs · 13/07/2016 15:26

Did anyone see Newsnight last night? They had a section on Merseyside and it having always had a tradition of hard left politics (Militant in the 80s etc). In the 90s, the Birkenhead CLP tried to unseat Frank Field led by a man called (I think) Dave Hill. Guess which CLP Mr Hill is now in charge of... Angela Eagle's Wallasey Sad.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/07/2016 16:38

To be honest I don't hold out a lot of hope for the Labour party at all now really

Sadly, neither do I Sad As longlegs suggested, none of the choices which seem to face them are especially attractive, which is a shame for those of us who genuinely want/expect to see an effective opposition ...

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 13/07/2016 18:37

I think we are witnessing the end of the Labour Party Sad

Maybe that's a good thing i don't want those who ignore bullying and have antisemitic views to represent the party I vote for but then I would never vote labour while Corbyn is leader

colouringinagain · 13/07/2016 20:52

Joanna Banter interview is disturbing.

Another enlightening but depressing article on The Pool re misogynistic attacks
