Maybe that's a good thing i don't want those who ignore bullying and have antisemitic views to represent the party I vote for but then I would never vote labour while Corbyn is leader

Did anyone see Newsnight last night? They had a section on Merseyside and it having always had a tradition of hard left politics (Militant in the 80s etc). In the 90s, the Birkenhead CLP tried to unseat Frank Field led by a man called (I think) Dave Hill. Guess which CLP Mr Hill is now in charge of... Angela Eagle's Wallasey .

No I think he had to go on the ballot one way or another really. Can you imagine the St Golden Jeremy the Martyr situation if he'd been kept off - it would not have been pleasant.

Well, indeed, Puzzled. The NEC had the choice of (a) keeping Corbyn off the ballot and facing possible legal action and, if that failed, a potential civil war among members (b) allowing him on the ballot and hoping like mad that he is ousted democratically and that the party rallies behind the new leader (c) allowing him on the ballot, anticipating a Corbyn win and then trying to stop a split after that.

It's not a great bunch of choices really, is it ? To be honest, as much as I'd like to see a new leader, I do think, given the way the rules were written, it would have been immoral to keep him off the ballot so we'll just have to see how this plays out. If he gets less than 50% of the vote and the people who vote for Eagle give Smith their second vote and vice versa and enough Corbynistas specify a second vote, then he may well go. But it's not going to be a very edifying process.

According to the Guardian, the NEC have voted that JC is "not subject to the rule that forces candidates to show they have the backing of 20% of the party’s MPs and MEP" which presumably means he doesn't need to show support from the 50-odd MPs previously mentioned?

Call me dense, but what I really don't get is how this can possibly be made to work if someone who the PLP can't work with is re-elected as leader? Just what the hell would happen then ... ??

Re the abuse, you only have to look at Twitter and FB for hundreds of examples of the vicious, tribal nature of some of the Corbyn following. If they are prepared to publish the personal abuse on a public forum I'm sure many won't hesitate to also address it directly to specific MPs deemed 'traitors'.

Stephen Kinnock on Ch 4 News last night described the stream of hatred he had personally been subjected to, and commented that he now had the 'skin of a rhino' as he was so used to it.
