Corbyn still hanging in there

I actually quite admire that. Hanging tough. I think it shows a sharp contrast to Cameron who can't get out of things soon enough.

Could Corbyn actually be the next PM?

Does the membership per month option have a minimum term? I did look a week or so ago and couldnt find any info on the website.

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 10:47

I don't think so. It's just by direct debit and you just cancel this if you wish to withdraw membership.

GlassCircles · 10/07/2016 12:53

Thank you - have joined.

Agree Ange isn't inspiring, but I think her only goal is to displace JC thus leaving the field open.

nellodee · 10/07/2016 18:20

I don't see this about voting for or against Corbyn. I see it as choosing whether you want ordinary people to be able to have a choice in who runs the party, or whether the MPs are able to control the party with no reference to the people working in the constituencies on their behalf. I also think Corbyn sees it that way, and that is why he is so determined to stand his ground: not to be leader per se, but to represent the party rather than the centrally selected MPs.

nellodee · 10/07/2016 18:21

So if you are voting against Corbyn, you are really voting to say your vote can be ignored at will.

BakewellSliceAgain · 10/07/2016 18:39

Yes and I'm fine e with that. I want a functioning opposition not a protest movement.

Imbroglio · 10/07/2016 18:41

Didn't want to start a new thread but does anyone know any facts/stats behind who is joining the Labour party? Seems like there is a surge in membership with some people claiming its Corbynistas, others saying its to stop him.

YourPerception · 10/07/2016 18:44

I am happy for JC to stand again if he wants to. I won't vote for him again.

Strangely enough ordinary people also don't want Corbyn.

or whether the MPs are able to control the party with no reference to the people working in the constituencies on their behalf.

MPs represent their constituents and the 9 million Labour voters. It is that which people forget! It isn't just the members and £3 'supporters' (Some of which don't even vote Labour)

I also think Corbyn sees it that way, and that is why he is so determined to stand his ground: not to be leader per se, but to represent the party rather than the centrally selected MPs.

He is the leader! If he doesn't want to be then stand down.

He doesn't represent the voters. He is polling terribly.

The Labour party policy is for renewing Trident. He is against it. Will he vote against his own party policy of which he is leader on 18th July?

GlassCircles · 10/07/2016 22:16

I'm an ordinary person and at the last election I voted for what at the time was 'Labour' to me. I didnt vote for 'New SWP' which seems to be where Corbyn's cult wants to take it.

merrymouse · 10/07/2016 22:25

So if you are voting against Corbyn, you are really voting to say your vote can be ignored at will.

It is precisely because the MPs cannot ignore the people voting for them that they don't have confidence in Corbyn.

Imbroglio · 10/07/2016 22:26

I don't see Corbyn as 'cultish'

GlassCircles · 10/07/2016 22:38

I do feel that has a cultish element, if my FB feed is anything to go by. So much talk of 'our class', 'our Party', 'traitors'.

flippinada · 10/07/2016 22:40

I think this is a problem that a lot of Corbyn supporters don't seem to grasp.

It's not just about what Labour Party members want.

In order for the Labour Party to effect change, they need to be in power. To get into power they need to convince that pesky act notoriously difficult group known as voters. Most of whom are not members of the Labour Party.

GlassCircles · 10/07/2016 22:46

The really odd thing is that a lot of the movement see the voter element as almost irrelevant - as if they are happy to live socialist ideals out via rallies and social media.

flippinada · 10/07/2016 22:50

Glass I agree. I've seen much much talk on social media using emotive language (quislings , traitors etc) about how the party is this, that and the other, how dare they, and the membership won't stand for it etc etc.

And this belief is reinforced because they're in a kind of echo chamber and back each other up.

flippinada · 10/07/2016 22:53

YY Glass.

TheNorthRemembers · 10/07/2016 22:57

Marking you place.

TheNorthRemembers · 10/07/2016 22:58

Glass and flippinada my thoughts exactly.

KatieHopkinsAteMyHamster99 · 10/07/2016 23:09

Agree with Glass and Flipinada (sp ?)
Corbyn and Momentum do not seem interested in running the LP for the benefit of the working class ( or anyone) by actually you know, becoming the government.

In fact despite all the posturing by Corbyn about sticking up for the poor etc, he has actually massively let down the vulnerable in oursociety by not getting the message across about the value of remaining in the EU to those people who feel let down by the establishment in post-industrial areas. He's just left them all to become UKIP supporters.

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 23:21

A message from the Chair of Momentum today:

@johnmcternan Democracy gives power to people, “Winning” is the small bit that matters to political elites who want to keep power themselves

Can anyone believe that this is a good way to work as a political party? It's just astonishing. But these people WILL try to get into CLPs and unseat MPs so that....we are always in Opposition with no power to change anything.

lalalonglegs · 10/07/2016 23:27

But the purity of their beliefs mean that it will be a glorious opposition that the oppressed will feel rightly empowered by, ThisPan. Winning elections - and becoming anything more than a talking shop is for Blarite war-mongering scum Hmm.

Highlandfling80 · 11/07/2016 00:22

Not read thread but I would live him to be next PM. He has been truly shafted by the media. Even my Tory dh admitted that his arguments for staying made more sense than our PM who jumped ship.
Yet the media played down everything he did or said.

Highlandfling80 · 11/07/2016 00:25

No Katie the media let him down. He did not letdown the poor.
