I don't think you're being harsh MrsLupo. She just doesn't exude leadership qualities.

PlatoTheGreat · 29/06/2016 15:59

Can someone explain what PLP stands for?

Hamishandthefoxes · 29/06/2016 16:00

Parliamentary Labour Party - the MPs.

CutYourHairAndGetAJob · 29/06/2016 16:00

I'm struggling to keep up with the thread (I spent the morning at soft play with two DC, which was probably not too different to being in parliament right now Wink).

I haven't signed the original petition for a second referendum because it would seem undemocratic, but I think I would support mrslupo's petition idea. I also think any new referendum should include the exact deal on the table - for example if that would mean membership of the eea with freedom of movement. I know that the EU are currently refusing to enter into informal negotiations, but would they be prepared to do so on the understanding that these would be put to a popular vote in England which would never win?

I am torn about corbyn - I really like him and I think a truly principled politician could be the antidote we need to all the lies and spin. I just wish his party would get behind him. But seeing as they won't, should he stand down for the sake of unity? Maybe he should quit labour and join the greens (only half joking...).

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 16:00

Even Corbyn's team are trying to persuade him to stand down now. Apparently it's at a 'delicate stage'.

They need some bloody hostage negotiators on the case!

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 16:01

'Some Labour MPs believe Corbyn clinging on to respond to Chilcot next week, apologise on behalf of Lab & call for Blair war crimes trial.'

GingerIvy · 29/06/2016 16:04

I don't think Cameron helped telling him to stand down in PMQs. In fact, the MPs looked a bit taken aback at that.

Are they worried, I wonder, about a backlash if they somehow manage to oust him? My understanding was if it came to a vote on a leadership challenge, Corbyn would remain as leader.

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/06/2016 16:05

Someone mentioned that on another thread I'm on too, Mitzy.

It seems quite a Corbyn thing to do, doesn't it.

Mind I don't think I'd be standing down if I thought there was a chance Blair could go on trial as he rightfully should post Chilcot.

GingerIvy · 29/06/2016 16:05

And yet, some are begging Blair to come back and take leadership. Frightening.

LurkingHusband · 29/06/2016 16:06

howabout

I watched a Diane Abbott interview where she described the introduction of tax credits primarily as a way to support families in the face of opposition to increases in child benefit or additional general tax allowances for dependants. I was sickened to hear DC quibbling the child poverty stats with JC at PMQs. Poverty is indeed falling for people with no responsibilities but not for families raising children or in caring or cared for situations.

Thanks for that. There is a logic behind that. In a country where tax-efficient trust funds for Tarquin and Jocasta are positively encouraged, while a tax-break for Jane and Wayne are reviled, it seems a crafty workaround.

Once again, we need to remember that of the families that William the Conqueror rewarded with massive tracts of land, 80% still hold that land. Inequality in the UK is hardly new. Nor are the many vested interests in keeping it that way.

GingerIvy · 29/06/2016 16:09

Clearly Cameron still hasn't grasped that a lot of the people that voted Leave did so because they felt that things were so bad that the chance of a change was more promising than continuing the status quo, due to the decisions his government made over the past few years.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 16:10

'I don't think Cameron helped telling him to stand down in PMQs. In fact, the MPs looked a bit taken aback at that.'

Cameron has a fucking cheek. He should be hanging his head in shame and flagellating himself. For the next 20 years.

Alexis Tsipras has given a supportive shout out on Twitter to his boi Jeremy.

Backing for Corbyn amongst constituency parties

Newsnight
Posted at
16:14
Jeremy Corbyn was elected on the biggest mandate in the Labour Party’s 116 year history, chosen with more 60% of the votes of the party membership.

That enthusiasm, however, was not shared by Labour’s MPs. Corbyn barely managed to get the 35 votes required to be nominated from the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP).

Yesterday, they voted by a margin of 172 to 40 in a vote of no-confidence against his leadership. Some MPs speculated that after the EU referendum, enthusiasm amongst the party grassroots had similarly soured.

There’s some evidence that this hope is wishful thinking. Newsnight has spoken to more than 50 Constituency Labour Party chairs and secretaries who endorsed Corbyn last year. Of those, 45 continue to offer their support and believe that their constituencies will again nominate the leader in the now inevitable leadership contest.

Many we spoke to were nothing short of incensed at the antics of the party’s MPs.

Patrick Smith, chair of Hull North said: “If they don’t listen to the membership then they should just leave.”

The chairman of Hartlepool CLP echoed that, saying: "The MPs seem more interested in the interests of the PLP rather than the membership.”

Another went further still: “It’s an absolute outrage. You’d think these characters were sleeper agents for the Tories. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they were working for Lynton Crosby.”

CutYourHairAndGetAJob · 29/06/2016 16:20

Apologies if this has already been posted but according to this the guy sitting behind farage when he accused the other MEPs of never having done a proper days work in their lives, was actually a heart surgeon who grew up in a Gulag.

LurkingHusband · 29/06/2016 16:28

How about, whenever it turns out we aren't all going to have our own pet unicorn ....

Has Boris been outmanoevered? Will someone please tell me who is in charge?
MrsLupo · 29/06/2016 16:35

Just come back in from the school run and see there's still no Corbyn news. One way or the other, he's finished though. Except that I think the real problem is that the PLP are deeply divided about who they would feel able to unite behind, which I fear means the Labour Party itself may be finished. In my own CLP even, they've been tearing slices out of each other about who they think should be leader and who they should be trying to appeal to. It seems to me that the party has been so fixated with winning back the core vote of yesteryear that they squander opportunities to build the new, younger core vote that's being handed to them on a plate. But what do I know, I'm just an ageing hippy idealist. Smile

Sky news have a leaked email between Mr and Mrs Gove re Boris!!

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 16:39

It reads: "Very important that we focus on the individual obstacles and thoroughly overcome them before moving to the next. I really think Michael needs to have a Henry or a Beth with him for this morning's crucial meetings.

"One simple message: You MUST have SPECIFIC from Boris OTHERWISE you cannot guarantee your support. The details can be worked out later on, but without that you have no leverage.

"Crucially, the membership will not have the necessary reassurance to back Boris, neither will Dacre/Murdoch, who instinctively dislike Boris but trust your ability enough to support a Boris Gove ticket.

"Do not concede any ground. Be your stubborn best.

"GOOD LUCK."

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 16:39

Lady Macbeth herself.

DoinItFine · 29/06/2016 16:43

David Puttnam just said Boris becoming Prime Minister would be dangerous.

On the Media Show.

Got closed down pretty quickly.

GingerIvy · 29/06/2016 16:49

Union leader tells MPs to put up or shut up.

Looks like Labour is turning out to be up for quite a battle.

And Liam Fox confirmed to be up for leadership for Tory party.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2016 16:49

Yikes!

Sky news is Murdoch. I don't think he's backing Boris then...
