The Tories have been repeatedly throwing the economy under buses since 2010.

5 years of elective austerity has left us in a shite state to deal with the ramifications of Brexit.

Is there a new thread?

Marking my place.
If you go to the march on Saturday you'll find me under the 'Betrayed by Boris' banner.
He was still our salaried mayor when he took up with the leavers. Disgrace.
Anyway, v much enjoying the thread, although finding it slightly terrifying to have my conspiracy theories given any credence.

The thing is, the Tories threw the economy under the bus.

Yes but that wasn't on purpose, it was through sheer incompetence Grin

(because let's face it they never thought they'd won this)

The niggling terrifying thought that keeps me awake at night worry I have is that someone will show up ready to destroy the banks and the economy, as a way to win the support of the anti-immigration majority. IE sacrificing the country so they can become PM.

Chalala It's the Tories we're talking about, no way they'll throw the bankers under the bus.

We're in New Times here. There are no rules. Grin

i don't know about the 'Never underestimate spin, it's why we're here,' thing. It's true. But we're also here because we seriously under-estimated the short-term cupidity of Johnson, et al.

Mind you, who's 'we' in this scenario? I suspect most of 'us' on this thread a. didn't vote for Brexit (so didn't buy the spin) b. won't be voting for the Conservative leadership anyway.

Right. I need to go and do something calming. I keep coming back to these threads in an attempt to assuage feelings of doom ... and then going to do something distracting in the RL to assuage feelings of doom.

seriously believe they are going to trade the City passport in return for immigration, then sell it to us an a victory for the common people

It's the Tories we're talking about, no way they'll throw the bankers under the bus

More likely, they'll get some meaningless immigration "concession" and then sell it back to the people as "look! we saved the economy"

There is a delicious irony in seeing Gove being victim of a leak. After all the Brexit stories he leaked to damage Cameron.

Wtf. There is no point in single market withou pt passporting! Might as well go out in to the wilderness and genuinely take back control and not pay any subs than take single market without passporting. Passporting is why people are fighting for single market surely?

More likely they would pretend they are being asked to trade the City passport for immigration, and then ta-da we'll be told that brave Boris has saved the day, given Johnny Foreigner what-for and it's cucumber sandwiches (again).

Never, ever underestimate the power of spin ... it's why we're here.

I seriously believe they are going to trade the City passport in return for immigration, then sell it to us an a victory for the common people (No more immigrants! Rich bankers can fuck off!). That's a huge source of tax income, which is money that goes to councils and to real people.

I need some lovely Lefties to come on here and reassure me that this is a good thing, in the long run. I know there are people out there who say this. I want to be hopeful and happy. Smile

Ah. That makes sense (re. Chancellor's job).

How depressing. A Murdoch/Dacre stooge in the Chancellor's job. And they'll be negotiating Brexit.

Oh, I am now hoping that the Conservatives will go with an anti-Johnson candidate. I don't think they will, though. Basically, a man that can get the majority of the population to slit its throat can certainly deliver them a GE. Sad

I think it's going to be assurances he gets the chancellor job.

Quite appropriate. He can be the face of 1,000 cunts. Sorry, cuts.

I think it's going to be assurances he gets the chancellor job. He's giving up his own run at the leadership for this.

Anyway, they only care about themselves, not the people.

The thing is, unless I'm lacking in understanding, is whoever the new leader of the Tories/PM is, they are basically back to square one, only the board has been reversed.

Presumably it will be a "Leaver" tory who will have to face down the problem that there will be a sizeable majority of "Remainers" who can cause all sorts of mischief.

I have no idea how treaties work, but if it's going to take several individual acts of Parliament to unravel the UK/EU relationship, then every single one becomes a new battleground.

Add to the mix a disorganised Labour party that can't be predicted, and it's a hihgly toxic brew.

And don't forget, while all this is going on, there has to be business as usual. If nothing else a new US administration to engage with (although if they have any sense, they'll give the UK a wide berth until Brexit is done and dusted. Especially since Leave repeated told them to fuck off and mind their own business).

Everywhere you turn, there's a shitstorm waiting to happen.

I think they want what it says - assurances. On what? Immigration? And otherwise they'll withdraw support?

It's dangerous going into negotiations with that as the major thing you're bargaining for.

I guess what we do know from the email is that, if Johnson (let's not call him something cuddly) goes for leadershp with the Sun and Mail behnd him, he's promised them something nasty. And he'll be negotiating for them, not us.

I also wonder why this email was 'accidentally leaked'.

You know, it's inconceivable that all these people have not been hauled off by the police. Sad The absolute disgrace of that is something we need to hold forefront in our minds.
