If Mr Johnson seeks to appeal to the more liberal parts of the party

Johnson's a homophobe too, he won't get the gay vote.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2016 15:08

Re Labour and the Unions. Not seen anything yet.

When's Chilcot due again?
Next week 6th July

He also put something of a pin in Nicola Sturgeon's ambitions, saying: "The negotiations will be conducted with the United Kingdom, not with a part of the United Kingdom."

For those that recall IndyRef, there was some coverage of the fact that there are other countries in Europe that face a unity challenge. Spain and the Basque region being the most obvious.

Given the map of Europe has been redrawn many times since 1914, it's entirely possible there are other simmering bids for autonomy just looking for a lead.

Much as the EU might like to treat Scotland as separate from England, it knows the dangers of playing to minor characters too well. I know Italys unity is less than perfect, and there is a strong sentiment they should dump the south.

I think much of the dissatisfaction of a section of leave voters could have been headed off if some form of NHS charge had been levied, even if the hassle outweighed the benefit. It's pathetic but it's true. It's all rather late now though.

I'm all for free movement and am only exploring this as a way out of this sorry mess.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2016 15:10

He's not after the gay vote. He's after looking more liberal than the other candidates.

Just out of interest, did Boris ever renounce his US citizenship or was that a crock of shit too ?

Perhaps he could piss off and save America? He's already a Trump double. Now there's a film nobody would watch.

Thinking about it, has anyone ever seem them in the same room together (possibly I have been watching too much "The Americans") ?

Any news yet on unions still supporting Corbyn? They were supposed to be meeting this afternoon.

Statement shortly - the meeting has ended though. Meantime, Ed Miliband has called on him to resign.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/06/2016 15:13

He might be about to go.

GingerIvy · 29/06/2016 15:20

ah, BBC just now reported unions still backing Corbyn. You have to wonder with the MP revolt how they think their support will play out here.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/06/2016 15:22

Oh.
Blush

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 29/06/2016 15:29

Oh bollocks

That's a Tory government for the next two elections then Angry

BessieBraddocksEgg · 29/06/2016 15:34

Thanks big Len.

MrsLupo · 29/06/2016 15:39

Not to be argumentative, but the BBC are saying atm that they still await a statement. Do you have inside info, Ginger?

Sorry, I know I'm an idiot in not understanding this right away (which is why I'm very grateful for this thread existing) - but why does that automatically mean 2 more Tory governments?

observers.france24.com/en/20080501-london-mayor-election-johnson-livingstone

Article title is 'Homophobic racist looks hopeful as new London mayor'

To appeal to the liberals he's got a load of lying to do. Luckily he's had lots of practice.

GingerIvy · 29/06/2016 15:49

Sorry - copy/pasted that from BBC News live feed. But it does look like they're still backing Corbyn.

And then re Gisela Stuart:

Labour MP and EU Leave campaigner Gisela Stuart says if Jeremy Corbyn "resigned now he would show he is a good man and puts the Labour Party first".

If he doesn't, a leadership challenge should go ahead, she adds.

She is asked who she might support out of the two candidates who are rumoured to be considering a bid: deputy leader Tom Watson and former shadow cabinet member Angela Eagle.

"I think it's time to have a woman Labour leader," she answers.

Yeah, Nicola's looking like she's having a bad day. Sad

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 15:51

I'm not sure I have much faith in Angela Eagle.

MrsLupo · 29/06/2016 15:52

Not so sure about Angela Eagle as a candidate. I know people rate her at PMQs but she'snot exactly the strong, charismatic leader the PLP seems to be saying they need. Or am I being too harsh?

GingerIvy · 29/06/2016 15:53

I can't say I know that much about Angela Eagle. I like Gisela Stuart, simply because she has experience with the EU. But what does Angela Eagle bring to the table?

MrsLupo · 29/06/2016 15:53

Sorry, x post.

howabout · 29/06/2016 15:55

Lurking I watched a Diane Abbott interview where she described the introduction of tax credits primarily as a way to support families in the face of opposition to increases in child benefit or additional general tax allowances for dependants. I was sickened to hear DC quibbling the child poverty stats with JC at PMQs. Poverty is indeed falling for people with no responsibilities but not for families raising children or in caring or cared for situations.
