Brexit

To not be able to speak to my near neighbours who voted leave?

My children's future has been put at stake. Our economy risks ruin. Our relatively -well-off neighbours in a place with nearly full employment and very low recent immigration (local care companies and NHS are desperate for staff) have voted leave. They are only around fifty.

I'm gobsmacked.

The irony is that the small business they are in is affected by the growth of China as an economic powerhouse. So why on earth do they feel that leaving the EU gives them more power? It gives them less.

I am so angry and feel so let down by my country. These people, and people like them ahem destroyed my hopes for a continued peace in Europe.

How on earth am I expected to talk to them on an equal footing, knowing what they have done through their own greed?

I hear you Trini.

Do you think austerity caused racism to rise?

Of course it should be in the public domain. I just can't imagine the leader of some country not in the EU thinking, oh hang on, let me just check the webiste to see what the criteria are.

I don't think financial circumstances cause racism. It's a deep rooted thing. During the referendum tv specials, Question time etc many audience members on the remain side (mostly white ones) argued that, if immigration from Europe is such a big problem then immigration from other places should stop. Well, the other places are largely Asian, African, Caribbean, Middle East and the seemingly much hated America. And when racism is committed against white EU immigrants it is universally denounced and all in uproar. So it comes across that UK remainers are happy to have unlimited migration of white people. Saying that won't earn me any friends here but it is what it is.

Do you think it is only Caucasians that are capable of racism?

Trini: a Caucasian can't be racist to a European. they are the same race.

Have you ever seen racism displayed towards Caucasians?

It is a filthy thing but it flows from more than one source.

I've been wondering about that in relation to reported incidents fluctuating (not just recently). Whether you can turn a gullible person bigoted if they are unhappy in their own life, or if they have to be basically bigoted all along. Or is it 100% nasty people acting out their private thoughts more.

That doesn't make it any the less true.

I know white Europeans are Caucasian but in the media verbal attacks at Polish people is being called racism. And all leave voters of whatever race are being branded as racist because some of them think UNLIMITED immigration from Europe is contributing to a fiscal and infrastructural problem. When I moved here to marry my husband I had 3 interviews at UK High Commission, they did background checks with police, obtained written and verbal testimony from my employer, asked me to submit bank account details to ensure that I had enough money to completely support myself for one year as I wouldn't be allowed to work or collect benefits for that period. It didn't bother or offend me to do that. I understand countries need to protect the interest of it's citizen and that, while a country has to accept it's native criminal elements, for example, it can screen those coming from outside. If I didn't want to submit to those checks then I could stay where I was. My choice. Free movement of ALL people with no guarantees of jobs, school places etc just does not make economic sense and can have negative social implications as well if, for example, some have criminal records. My leave vote was decided on issues of democracy and unfair treatment of fishing and farming industries. But UNLIMITED unchecked immigration is a very real problem. And people who hold that view are being branded as racists and xenophobes. People refusing to talk to their neighbours or friends or family over it is horrible.

Just5minswithDacre If it's not in a person to be racist and horrible no circumstance would make them that way. Horrible people do exist, not sure if they are born or bred that way or both. Ultimately, no matter your inner feelings we all choose how we act.

And in relation to the issues around unlimited immigration according to this article 56% of rough sleepers in London are not English. It's like something out of Dickens people come looking for a better life and end up destitute. Perhaps ensuring they had a job, somewhere to live and the means to return to their families if things go wrong would have prevented many making a massive mistake.

I'm confused. What authority says it's not racism because Europeans are the same skin colour?

TriniRedVelvet · 29/06/2016 19:22

There's a difference between race and nationality. But they tend to hide this kind of information in books.

Report
BessieBraddocksEgg · 29/06/2016 19:46

The confusion arises imho due to uk government now saying in discrimination legislation race includes nationality.

Just5mins I'm pretty sure that if you put someone (anyone) in shitty circumstances where they're struggling to get by, and then continually drip-feed them stories about immigrants walking into the country and getting free council houses/cars/lavish benefits, you can make them pretty UKIP-y.

Murdoch and, er, Dacre have bet the farm on it.
