Did you marry your university boyfriend?

I have just been looking at the Oxbridge thread and noticed that a lot of relationships survived. Is this peculiar to these universities?
I'm thinking that on graduating they all stayed in the SE or London.

I married somebody else's college boyfriend Wink

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 17/08/2012 20:37

DH was at Cambridge and I was at law school when we met. Been together 20 years Shock

teacher123 · 17/08/2012 20:38

Met at university, me in my final year, him in his first year. Together 10 years, married 3, one DS, four months old. We went to a red brick uni, not Oxbridge and moved to London after graduating. Now live in the home counties.

PandaNot · 17/08/2012 20:39

It is collegiate, and I think the stats came from the university themselves, in one of those alumni magazines that I hardly ever read

TheDogDidIt · 17/08/2012 20:39

Yes, and Oxbridge Smile.

greenhill · 17/08/2012 20:41

Yes. Not Oxbridge but our Welsh University was established in 1822.
We met in October 1989 at the Student's Union bar and were best friends from then on.

We got together in November 1991, married in November 2006 and have a 5yo and a 2yo.

I've known and loved my DH for virtually the whole of my adult life.

pearlgirl · 17/08/2012 20:43

Met in my first year at Uni - not Oxbridge - started going out in the new year, been together for 25 years, married for 19. It also dawned on me at some point that it is over half my life.

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 17/08/2012 20:44

No, I married his housemate Grin. Although he was a student at the uni too.

Almost all of my friends from university days are married to people they met at uni.

I do remember at my (all-girl) school, a teacher giving us a talk on why we should go to university. The top two reasons were:

  1. it's a cheap and easy way to leave home (in the days of grants and no fees!) and
  2. you'll meet a husband there and he'll probably go on to have a good career and be fairly rich

We were all horrified at the teacher's views, but looking back, she was bloody right. Obviously she missed off 3) you'll have a really good time and 4) you'll get a degree and the chance of a good career too

Met DH in my last year of Uni - he'd left the same Uni the year before (ex-poly). He was visiting mutual friends and kept coming back to visit (to try and see me as he later admitted) as he lived 150 miles away. Finally got together after my final exam that was 17 years ago, and had Dd 2 years ago!

Northernexile · 17/08/2012 20:47

Yes! We were at different unis though and met in our final year. Does that still count?

KnackeredCow · 17/08/2012 20:47

Not me, but my PIL met at Birmingham Uni. They've been married 43 years now.

Tiago · 17/08/2012 20:47

Yes, save that he wasn't my BF until about 5 days before graduation. I had, in fact, refused to date him during the course (though in the last year I was a green eyed monster if he showed interest in anyone else, which he finds hilarious as I really didn't realise I was jealous)!

RustyBear · 17/08/2012 20:49

Yes, DH and I met at Exeter in my first term and we are still married nearly 38 years later. DD also went to Exeter, incidentally, but didn't end up with a boyfriend from there.

PandaNot · 17/08/2012 20:50

Quoted here in this article too, I knew I hadn't dreamed it!

Kaloobear · 17/08/2012 20:52

dottyaboutstripes · 17/08/2012 20:53

Yes - met and started going out in third year of uni. Moved in together at end of uni, still together 11 years later; married last year. Not Oxbridge and didn't stay in uni town either. We're the only ones out of all our uni friends to still be together!

smokeybacon · 17/08/2012 20:59

Yep. Married 13 yes. Together a lot longer. 4 DCs . we stayed in our poly town too.

ClaireRacing · 17/08/2012 20:59

Not Oxbridge, but Russell Group (2b)

Yes. DH (year above) and I married shortly after my graduation.

CokeFan · 17/08/2012 21:01

Yes, Durham (same college, different courses).

roughtyping · 17/08/2012 21:02

I am engaged to the boyfriend I had at university. He went to Stirling, I went to one in Glasgow.

turkeyboots · 17/08/2012 21:04

I did. Not Oxbridge though

albertswearengen · 17/08/2012 21:05

DH and I got together a week before our finals so I suppose technically yes he was my university boyfriend. We've been together 21 years (which is scary written down).
