Did you marry your university boyfriend?

I have just been looking at the Oxbridge thread and noticed that a lot of relationships survived. Is this peculiar to these universities?
I'm thinking that on graduating they all stayed in the SE or London.

DH and I met in the first week of uni (ex poly) and got married a few days before the graduation ceremony. Been together nealy 11 years now and married for 8.

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 17/08/2012 20:17

my parents met at uni too, didn't get together at uni but got together shortly after graduating through mutual uni friends - red brick

CMOTDibbler · 17/08/2012 20:17

IwishIwasinLondon - what year did you go to Cardiff ? I can see Garytankcommander is somewhat younger than me !

hanahsaunt · 17/08/2012 20:18

Yes. Not Oxbridge. Together 18 years [gulp] and married for 13. 4dc.

Whyriskit · 17/08/2012 20:18

Yes, been together for 16 years, married for 8. Got together at the end of first year at Edinburgh. DH failed everything and changed uni.
Now have 2 DS and happily living just outside Edinburgh. if anyone knows me on here i've completely outed myself!

CountBapula · 17/08/2012 20:19

No I didn't, and I frequently thank my lucky stars for it because he was an utter twat.

Went to Oxford, though.

discrete · 17/08/2012 20:19

Yes, and it was Oxbridge.

PheasantPlucker · 17/08/2012 20:20

Not Oxford, and didn't marry uni boyfriend. Thank God.

harbingerofdoom · 17/08/2012 20:20

My DH was at the same VIth form as me but we hardly met. Met after uni and now married for 25 years.
DD1 and DD2 have both met lovely boys/students/men and I wonder?

OP posts:
CarpeJugulum · 17/08/2012 20:20

Yep.

Been together for 14 years, married 11, and had DS about 2 years ago.

motherinferior · 17/08/2012 20:20

Oh my god no, and I am madly thankful that I finally got shot of him.

parabelle · 17/08/2012 20:20

No, dated him for eight years but we broke up.

Fuzzywood · 17/08/2012 20:20

Yep, now ex H, not Oxbridge, we did end up in the S East but didn't go to Uni there. I know quite a few couples who met at uni (again not Oxbridge) who are still together. Met DH at work, know plenty of couples who met like that too Grin

ggirl · 17/08/2012 20:21

good lord there's a huge percentage of yes answers here!

I didn't go to uni, did old fashioned nurse training but did meet dh during my training

MrTumblesCrackWhore · 17/08/2012 20:21

met at uni (midlands red brick) briefly, didn't like each other, met again through uni friends 5 years later, liked each other, and now 10 years later we have two kids together. Does that count?

5madthings · 17/08/2012 20:21

dp and i met at uni in the first year, we had ds1 whilst we were both at uni and are still together now, 4 more dc's since then and ds1 turns 13 this weekend :) we arent married tho!

and not oxbridge uni.

PandaNot · 17/08/2012 20:23

Yes, Durham. There's some astonishing statistic about Durham that I can't quite remember but its something not far off 70% of Durham graduates meet their partner at Durham. So it's not confined to Oxbridge.

scottishmummy · 17/08/2012 20:23

we met as students
still together

Ketuk · 17/08/2012 20:23

Yes, RG university, been together 20 years, married for 11.
He wasn't my first serious relationship though.

Moln · 17/08/2012 20:23

Yes, well married the last boyfriend.

Welsh university not Oxbridge.

harbingerofdoom · 17/08/2012 20:26

MrTCW Yes, sounds like our getting together!

OP posts:
scaevola · 17/08/2012 20:26

Good heavens no!

The first was sex on legs (sadly wildly unfaithful) with whom I had an on/off FWB-type relationship (before that term was ever invented) for years (including post-university for a while). Not one to marry, but enormous fun.

Second was for most of time there, it just ran its course.

Third was probably the one who was the most classically handsome; he dumped me just after graduation. Devastating at the time.

I am in occasional e-contact with the first, sometimes wonder about the second, and hear news of the third from mutual acquaintances sometimes.

DottyWottyDooDah · 17/08/2012 20:27

Yes, but he was my boyfriend when I was at school too (just: I was 16, he 19 and working).
We married when I was graduated and so was he (he went to Uni as mature student and overlapped me).
Been together for 18 years (wow) and married for nearly 10.
Not Oxbridge.

harbingerofdoom · 17/08/2012 20:31

Pandanot where did you find these stats? Isn't Durham another
collegiate university?

OP posts:
BrianButterfield · 17/08/2012 20:34

Yes, met in the third week of uni, together for 14 years, married for 6, our DS has just turned 1. God, I'm old Grin
