Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

OP posts:
Ballarat · 01/03/2011 20:22

I'm sure it was a music place. I didn't think you had the grammar system in Herts. So are some state schools allowed to select?

BiscuitsandBaileys · 01/03/2011 20:43

I'm hoping the postman has his rollerskates on tomorrow and kicking myself for not applying online Grin

ajuba · 01/03/2011 20:57

Ballarat - yes they are, theres a test and a distance criteria. I'm not quite sure exactly how they inter-relate as my DCs are quite young so don't have to worry about all that yet.

pranma · 01/03/2011 20:59

Anyone in or near Chorleywood who has got a GS place?dgd will be applying next year.

DartsRus · 01/03/2011 21:07

Niecie,

we don't have many visits to secondaries around here. Just some taster sessions at the time applications are made, and then in the summer term they'll all get 2 full consecutive days in their new schools.

I now know that dd's best friend is also going to the same school, and probably at least 5 other friends, so hopefully they'll all keep together.

weblette · 01/03/2011 21:15

Finally! Managed to get onto the website, dd offered first choice grammar phew!

Still no email though...

Pranma - I would assume Clement Danes would be their first choice? Really need to check the catchment

sallyannetoo · 01/03/2011 21:21

I noticed an earlier post mentioning that our site elevenplusexams has been crashing.

Despite increasing our server space by some absolutely ridiculous factor for March 1st the website has indeed been creaking under the strain of unprecedented numbers of visitors today.

We are certainly not alone in that, and there has hardly been an Admissions website in the entire country that has been reliable today. (The Bucks CC online portal was only working for something like 30 minutes, or so I am told.)

Hopefully it will settle down this evening and tomorrow, and normal service will be resumed. In the meantime, please accept my apologies if you have been trying to access the site and have had difficulty.

Very good luck to everyone still fighting against the wonders of technology to get their DCs' school allocations.

Sally-Anne

BillComptonstrousers · 01/03/2011 21:22

Bloody hell, I got a phone call from DD saying they got their letters handed out at school, so she opened it while I was on at the phone at work, she got 1st choice!
I thought I would have to wait a couple of days as our post is really rubbish, is at bizarre they got handed out at school?

kslatts · 01/03/2011 21:25

I logged on to the London website, found out dd had been offered 1st choice, accepted the place and received an email confirming, now I've received another email saying they couldn't offer dd any of her choices.

elizadoestoomuch · 01/03/2011 21:26

MadameDafarge I'm chuffed to bits for you too. Thankyou for your kind message. x

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2011 21:30

how odd kslatts. I think you will be ok, but suspect you will be one of many on the phone tomorrow.
Eliza I am very happy for you that you have this good news.

dd is really happy tonight :)

kslatts · 01/03/2011 21:36

I might just wait and see what the letter says, hopefully the second email is just an error.

breadandbutterfly · 01/03/2011 21:43

ajuba, we live in Bushey but way over the other side, it was a place on exam not distance (we live far too far for distance place). Amazed, as she didn't see the last page - we didn't know if she'd missed 2 questions or 20 but am assuming it was nearer the former than the latter!

squatbottom · 01/03/2011 21:44

come on sallyanntoo, sort it out.
Weak excuses and comparing yourself to poorly performing local authorities is not really going to get you into a grammar school is it.

melezka · 01/03/2011 21:50

Bill I might be entirely wrong about this but I think I remember when DS was going from primary to secondary the school had had the offers for a couple of days before they gave them out.

AlmightyCitrus · 01/03/2011 21:52

Still nothing on the website, no email either.
Useless they are.
Giving up now.

melezka · 01/03/2011 21:52

kslatts that was the nature of the confusing email it seems many in our local authority received - only it was on the same email Confused

sallyannetoo · 01/03/2011 21:57

Sorry, I don't get the last bit. We are a small independent website. Although we have a bookshop, all the profits are ploughed back in to providing discounted materials and resources for the website. Any further surplus is donated to charity. All the Moderators (of which I am one, for those who don't know of the site) are unpaid volunteers.

We increased our server space by more than ten-fold today to cope with the traffic but sadly it has all been even more frantic than we expected.

I simply wanted to apologise to the MNetters who have been trying to access EPE today, and there are a number of them.

Did you think that I was from Bucks CC, or that the website is some sort of official one?

Did you think that I was from Bucks CC?

sallyannetoo · 01/03/2011 21:58

Apologies for the repetition in that post.

ajuba · 01/03/2011 22:09

breadandbutterfly, do you know how many places are allocated to merit as apposed to distance? live quuite close to the grammar schools at the moment but maybe moving to north watford/bushey as central watford is so grotty - but will obviously be moving out of catchment.

verybored · 01/03/2011 22:10

Sallyann, I think squatbottom was just joshing you Grin

MadameDefarge · 01/03/2011 22:11

steady on squat, there is a big difference between well-funded local authorities (well, for the moment) and a website that operates for non profit...

They have done their best, and unlike everyone else, have had the good grace to apologise for it on here.

TIDDLYMUM · 01/03/2011 22:14

Ah at least I know why I can't get on the eleven plus site! hought it was just me!

My friend reports that the Trafford online system has failed for some people, though others have been able to get their allocation. Feel very much for anyone around the country who is having to wait longer.

It was our turn last year, very stressful

jodee · 01/03/2011 22:23

Congrats to GORGEOUS and DD! Now there is more Wine for the rest of us poor souls who still have to wait until tomorrow!

breadandbutterfly · 01/03/2011 22:26

ajuba - 45 out of 180 places are on exam, another 50 or 60 siblings and then the rest on distance.

Know what you mean about central Watford! I'd rather take the risk on the exam than live there!
