Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

Didn't have tests but live out of catchment.
Will not relax till the letter comes.

chatee · 13/01/2011 20:48

same as Talkinpeace but our dd has cp and has a statement but am demanding big changes and won't be happy until it is wrote properly and of course the school named!

lets support each other x

Madsometimes · 13/01/2011 20:51

Dd1 has a test this Saturday. It has become evident that she does not deal well with pressure, so we are down playing it, and may well send her to the comprehensive.

GORGEOUSPSYCHIC · 13/01/2011 20:53

Madsometimes - Crikey, are there still tests going on? Which area are you in? I'm in Surrey.

Yes waiting and finding it hard. DD tried for GS and 2nd choice is a good comp. We dont really mind where she goes both are good, but she worked so hard to do the 11+ so it would be nice for her to get in. But the GS had 1300 DC apply for 120 places so not really holding our breath.

cory · 14/01/2011 08:15

No tests here (not a grammar school area) but am pretty desperate for ds to get into out-of-catchment school with disabled access and experience of his condition; can't face the thought of having to go to appeal once more.

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 09:33

Dommy do you mean Tiffin Girls? If so SNAP! That's our 3rd choice, however if DD gets into that school I don't know how I'm going to keep her focused without monetary renumeration becoming a way of life Grin. It's like a jungle out there in the GS sector, don't you think?

Our local comp. is not bad so I won't be seeking therapy if she doesn't get into a GS (keep saying it and I might believe it) Wink.

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 09:35

Cory You've just put it all into perspective for me. It must be an absolute nightmare to have to fight for everything for your DC. Hope you get the school that you want for your DC.Smile

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 09:39

Chatee sorry to be ignorant but I'm a new girl on here - what's cp? and yes, let's keep each other posted on here Smile

willow · 14/01/2011 12:19

GORGEOUSX - don't wish to stress you out more, but to stand a chance of getting into either Tiffin schools, you have to put them down as first choice - unless it's even less likely that you will get in to either your first or second choice. (And with upwards of 1500 kids applying for 140 places at each school, Tiffin tends to win in the "school we are least likely to get into" stakes!) If you are offered either of your top two you won't be offered Tiffin, regardless of whether or not your DS has come top in the Tiffin exam. (Which probably won't concern you as it isn't your top choice - but I hope you get what I mean!)

Madsometimes · 14/01/2011 12:29

The test is for an indie, but we also have a comprehensive that we really like.

Dommy · 14/01/2011 13:02

Yes as I understood it, if I had put the local comp down first as I almost did, even if DD had done really well in the exam and got into Tiffin, she would not have been considered for a place there. But in the end I did put Tiffin first, the comp dont find out I had put them as 2nd, and so automatically offer a place as if I had put it first (once siblings SEN distance etc taken into account). Oh and re:

''upwards of 1500 kids applying for 140 places at ... Tiffin"

For info, this year, according to Tiffin Girls School, officially there were 1300 who applied for the 120 places.

Talkinpeace · 14/01/2011 13:16

Cory
knowing what your catchment school is from our past conversation
GOOD LUCK.

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 13:19

Willow - I realise that - it is my 3rd choice. My first 2 choices are nearer. All schools are obliged to implement equal-preference - and that means the school has no idea whether you have put them 1st or last on the CAF and are not allowed to discriminate against you. If my DD doesn't get into the first or second choice schools, but scores in the top 120, Tiffin are obliged to offer her a place, regardless of which choice I put on the CAF. Indeed, Tiffin Girls, as all the schools, have no idea where you have listed them on the CAF. They merely send a list to the LA, in rank order based on scores, who allocate places based on children meeting schools' criteria and preferences.

willow · 14/01/2011 13:25

Yeah, I realised after posting that you'd rather the other two so it didn't matter if she got offered them first!

Re numbers - around 1500 boys took this year's exam. It was carnage :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2011 13:27

no tests here and all our local comps are great but still slightly nervous.

CarrotsAreNotTheOnlyVegetables · 14/01/2011 13:51

Gorgeous yes as long as you put your REAL preference down you will get the right result, ie if you would prefer your DD to get into the other two schools if you qualify you will get the right result.

I actually prefer our nearest comp to Tiffin Girls, but local mums just don't believe me!

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 14:09

Carrots I believe you. I'm not sure about Tiffin Girls for my DD. She's extremely bright but likes to have fun and is not dedicated to studies - unlike DD1 - who is doing very well at Nonsuch but different personality. My DD1 is laid back but I think it's too pressured and, from what I understand, Tiffin Girls is even worse.

kayah · 14/01/2011 14:11

yep - witing very nervously for my ds

CarrotsAreNotTheOnlyVegetables · 14/01/2011 14:24

I felt that Tiffin would not cater well for my DD as, though she is very bright and excels academically, she has many non-academic interests thst she is passionate about. The local comp is also very good academically and has better provision for her other interests.

Deaddei · 14/01/2011 14:48

Would that local comp be CG?

Dommy · 14/01/2011 18:56

''Re numbers - around 1500 boys took this year's exam. It was carnage''

I hadnt' realised the boys school had more places than the girls and more applicants for the exam! I thought the queue at the girls school was eye-wateringly horrendous as it was!!

Dommy · 14/01/2011 19:03

I wonder why it takes until early March for the exam results to be out?

Is it a combo of late sitters and any exams which are not marked electronically that adds on the weeks? I'm guessing their's a logic to the March date beyond my comprehension...(quite frankly a lot of things are:o)

Deaddei · 14/01/2011 19:11

It is to string out the agony.

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 19:19

LOL!
