Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

I dont live an area with selection but have a question for those of you who do. Are there fewer places for girls in selective schools than for boys? I notice below that someone posted that there were more places at Tiffin Boys than Tiffin Girls. If this is the case then it is outrageous ! If you are going to have selection then surely the girls should have an equal chance. I presume this is because all selective schools are single sex ( is this true?) and the numbers of each type of school hark back to the dark ages when girsl werent seen to be as in need of an education.

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 14/01/2011 19:40

Could be idling but it could equally be simple building size coudln;t it? Unfair either way though.

We've already ben allocated our palce for next eyar (yay) and we got the school we wanted, 2 places and 37 qualifying kids. It's an AS base within a mainstream school and ds1 will thrive.

bigcar · 14/01/2011 19:44

waiting on ds1s place, didn't sit the grammar test so should get into the school we put down first on list.

Where I live there are 3 boys grammar schools and 2 for the girls, although the girls schools take more in each year there's still fewer girls grammar spaces overall.

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 20:17

bigcar do you come under Sutton borough?

bigcar · 14/01/2011 20:34

yep Smile

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 20:43

Reckon you will get your first choice then 'cos it's a jungle here for GSs! Good luck Smile

bigcar · 14/01/2011 20:52

I hope so, although catchments are very tight for the good non grammars and we're not even close to falling within those, so best of a bad bunch for us.

bigcar · 14/01/2011 20:53

have you chosen a sutton school? Hope you get what you want Smile

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 20:59

Our 1st choice is Nonsuch 'cos DD1 is there. After the GSs our choice is Overton Grange. Would have preferred Rosebery, but we're in Cheam so not in-catchment. I won't be devastated if she gets Overton as lots of kids from round here go there, but I don't think she'll knuckle down there as she is just discovering that boys are not as annoying as she used think they were! Shock

chatee · 14/01/2011 20:59

sorry cp = cerebral palsy

we only have 'the choice'of two secondary schools but the lea only provide transport to one of them (rural)

and yes you can guess which was not my first choice

so we will have to wait and see, although we are supposed to be issued with the statement by feb 15th(but i won't hold my breath on that either)

GORGEOUSX · 14/01/2011 21:04

Totally sympathise - and you have even less 'choice' than the rest of us. Wishing you loads of luck.

RustyBear · 14/01/2011 21:17

I think the March 1st date is because all state secondary schools now offer places on the same day

kayah · 14/01/2011 21:41

I was told that in London there are more single sex girls schools hence in mixed schools there are more boys.
Hope that helps :)

BarkisIsWilling · 15/01/2011 14:42

Signing in - gives me sthg else to think about apart from our ongoing restructure...

idlingabout · 15/01/2011 14:48

Kayah - does that mean there are mixed selective schools? If so then surely selective means just that and it would be patently unfair to restrict the number of girls ??
Sorry if I have digressed from the thread somewhat and good luck to all waiting places. I am waiting to hear if dd has got in to school for which we are just out of catchment but would normally be no problem getting in to. However the millenium baby boom could affect places as it did for primary when we were denied a place at catchment school because of the insidious sibling priority rule.

Ingles2 · 15/01/2011 14:56

Hiya.. Can I join you? Grin
we're in Kent and we already know Ds1 passed the 11+, infact passed with nearly full marks, which made things slightly more complicated as we hadn't considered the super selectives before.
Problem is we're actually in a comp area and the furthest possible distance from the GS.
There are boys in the village who go to our 1st choice so hopefully

Lucycat · 15/01/2011 14:56

Also signing in, although we have no selective process and no other option for dd than our local school so I'm glad not to be worrying about it.

The pressure on these poor kids is outrageous Sad

coppertop · 15/01/2011 16:16

Signing in too.

No tests here (other than a banding one) but still nervewracking. Ds1 has SN (autism) but no statement and tbh none of the local schools are great.

kayah · 15/01/2011 20:51

idlingabout - my comment was only about state schools

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 22:19

THANK YOU to everyone who responded. Shall we all post our results on here 1st/2nd March and commiserate with all the unsuccessful posters? I'm thinking the happy posters won't need any more joy but the unhappy ones will need loads of cyber hugs. Smile

kayah · 15/01/2011 22:27

cyber hugs and gallons of ink (or wine :) )

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 22:29

Oh yes, loads of wine.... Grin .... not that I normally ......

carminaburana · 15/01/2011 22:36

Didn't apply for grammar schools as our local ones are Sutton grammar & Tiffin Boys - extremely hard to get into. our 1st choice is a very popular over-subscribed school however, so fingers crossed (March 1st can't come quickly enough )

bigcar · 15/01/2011 22:36

did someone mention wine? Grin

has everyone applied on line or have some to wait for the post?

bigcar · 15/01/2011 22:40

aren't they all round this way carmin, it's not fun!
