Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

Glad you got your 1st choice the original nutcracker Smile

just out of curiosity has anyone from Birmingham had their email? As I still have had nothing Angry

miniwedge · 01/03/2011 10:26

Well, I've just spoken to admissions and the plot thickens.

DD has been wait-listed for all three of our higher preferences, the first two are gs, the guy on the phone basically said, if she's waitlisted she passed but I'm not allowed to tell you marks etc and don't even have them.
Has been wait-listed for third school also as she meets criteria but it is oversubscribed.

He thinks there will be movement but not half as much as previous years because of the move towards state as opposed to indie. (recession etc)

We don't get told where dd is on the wait lists until Weds 9th.
We then get to drink lots of wine and panic about finding another school until Dec this year when the lists close.

After that, you can make another application through the casual admissions system. But, they will not tell you which schools have vacancies until you apply, you have to do a CAF all over again and do the waiting game all over again....

Good bye nails, hello cirrhosis of the liver.

Anyone heard from Kent yet? My ex-husband actually filled in all the forms etc, so he has the login details for the website/he'll get the email if they send one. I have texted him this morning to ask him to let me know as soon as he knows, but I don't think he will. He has some kind of huge power-trip mentality and him knowing while I wait will make him feel like the big man! Moron... he doesn't seem to care that it's his child who is affected by this.

Ingles2 · 01/03/2011 10:31

Congratulations and commiserations to everyone so far...
Have just checked our online admission, no change as yet...
Ds1 was very nervous this morning, I'm still trying to be matter of fact.
See you all later for Wine

Ingles2 · 01/03/2011 10:33

Toby... emails from 4pm, if it's the same as Kent test results.
Which school are you hoping for?

Sportsmum · 01/03/2011 10:36

TobyLerone - I really feel for you. Is it worth asking your DC's primary school - and tell them that your ex is playing power games and won't talk to you? They might know - I'm sure some people have said the schools have been told? Alternatively, the school might be in a position to find out for you?

Hope you find out soon.

Cornishwitch · 01/03/2011 10:43

I just want to know now, DD's best friend found out before school this morning, but since we are in different county will not find out until after 4pm, will not get an email either as most at school have, will have to keep fingers crossed that website does not crash at 4.01pm. Feeling very stressed and sick!

TobyLerone · 01/03/2011 10:44

Oh, thanks ladies :)

I'm hoping for Norton Knatchbull.

The school were quite good with the Kent Test results. They often make sure there are 2 copies of every letter which goes home, because they know what he's like. He picks the children up from school every day, so if they don't send 2 copies of letters, I don't get one. He does it on purpose, even though they live with me. He seems to think it's funny that I don't know about cake sales or book week until the day before/morning of the event, despite the fact that it's the children it affects. Aaaaaanyway! Rant over Grin

With the Kent Test results, the school wouldn't give me the results the morning they came out, because the email didn't go until 4pm, and therefore my son could potentially have found out before his friends knew. Which was fair enough. So I can't imagine they'd tell me the results until tomorrow anyway. My ex is fetching the children from school, so I suppose he'll take them home and find out and I'll know when I pick them up after work. It's only a few hours...

Thanks for letting me know, though. At least if I know he won't find out til 4pm I won't sit and stew about it all day!

im from birmingham and have still not had my email but did phone admissions and have to admit i cried when they told me my daughter has got into her first choice preference grammer school :) :) just cant wait til 3.30 now to tell her!

LadyWellian · 01/03/2011 11:10

I am driving myself nuts now, looking at the home-to-school distances of the last places offered in the 2010 admissions. Have agreed with DH we will all look at the website together when we get home (about 7pm) but the suspense is killing me! Haven't even seen DD today as she stayed at a friend's last night because we were at a gig. Can't concentrate on work at all.

Glad some of you have got the answers you wanted. Hope those who haven't get some joy on waiting lists.

reban · 01/03/2011 11:11

the tel no for birmingham admission is 01216750555 they really nice and as long as you have applied online they can tell you what place your child has been offered x

TobyLerone · 01/03/2011 11:12

Oooh, good luck, Ingles :)

weblette · 01/03/2011 11:16

Fingers crossed folks!

Miniwedge - sounds like you need vats of Wine not glasses. Good that she 'seems' to have passed though. Hope it all works out.

foxinsocks · 01/03/2011 11:21

no results from London yet?

so it may be that we have to wait till 5 argh!

LauraPhoenix · 01/03/2011 11:22

Just posting an update. I just put DS1 on the waiting list for our preferred school. We definately are going to appeal though as we don't want to rely on that. I had a look around the Internet for sites with advice and bought a guide (not sure if I'm allowed to post links - if not please remove) from www.schoolappeals.net. I haven't read it yet, but thought it may help someone else in the same situation.

carminaburana · 01/03/2011 11:23

Yep - London is 5pm -

MilkNoSugarPlease · 01/03/2011 11:26

London is 5pm

hedwig06 · 01/03/2011 11:28

I've given in and rang admissions at Birmingham city council, my DD got her 1st choice, so very pleased, apparently there is a glitch as none of the Birmingham emails have been sent.

They will only tell you over the phone if you applied online.

Heres the number:- 0121-6750555

Good luck everyone xxxx

foxinsocks · 01/03/2011 11:30

it's such an awful time. I like to leave work at 5pm grrrr I might have to try and log in on my phone!

Hullygully · 01/03/2011 11:42

Whoo-hoo steamed open dd's letter and she's in.

Good luck all!

GORGEOUSX · 01/03/2011 11:46

LOL! What county are you in Hullygully ? Congrats. Grin

BiscuitsandBaileys · 01/03/2011 11:46

I am also waiting in Kent, but we didn't apply online so have to wait for our letter to come tomorrow! Arrghhh!

willow · 01/03/2011 11:48

Foxinsocks - yep, they've done endoscopy - nothing nasty but very "fruity" gastritis, whatever the hell that means! (Sorry for sidetrack all and TMI)

Hedwig is now officially Birmingham admissions' favourite person... NOT. :)
