Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

Haddd1s email. First choice confirmed but wasn't really much choice in it.

lambbone · 01/03/2011 08:51

OYBBC's link is useful and the information contained in the article is good stuff - apart from the headline, which is misleading. It is important to remember that you can only appeal FOR a place at a particular school, not AGAINST a place at the school you've been offered.

miniwedge · 01/03/2011 08:53

We're not going to appeal but will be going for continued interest at one comp and see what position she is ranked in for the gs.

TBF the school she has been allocated is ok, but the lack of sixth form is a pisser and they don't put any emphasis on what their pupils do after they leave, ie going on to A-levels or college etc.
There is no decent sixth form provision in our town at all, there is only the local college and their results are dire.

We will have no option but to go further afield or pay if we wait until GCSE years.

I think realistically we will have to consider moving schools from yr 8. But will wait and see what dd thinks....

Pluses are very good sports facilities and science is a particular strong point there.
Also do some good extra curricular clubs.

MyDearGirl · 01/03/2011 08:56

Still waiting ..........

Mumsaysno · 01/03/2011 08:58

Had an email this morning and my dd has been allocated a place at the only school we applied for. Live between two counties and only had one school in the county we live in to apply for but it is a very good school and over subscribed so still a relief to know she got in. Just got to prepare myself for september when she goes.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 01/03/2011 09:14

Thank's hedwig. I still can't seem to log in though.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 01/03/2011 09:17

Which ID number are we meant to have ?? Is it the ref number from the application ??

tiredofchallenge · 01/03/2011 09:27

Sorry to post and dash earlier - school run!

Re logging in to Birmingham allocations - the application number didn't work as a username, so I tried using my standard username and email, guessing that it was probably what I'd used back in Oct (although I can't find any emails etc confirming that). Then clicked on the "Print completed summary" and the allocation was there. Still no email tho.

DD didn't get her first or second choice (both grammars), but did get 3rd, which I'm happy with although she's not at the moment. Does anyone know when/how we can get the scores for the grammar schools?

TheOriginalNutcracker · 01/03/2011 09:27

Finally !!! I managed to log in, and dd2 has got her first choice, as expected, as dd1 is already there Smile

Thank's for your help Hedwig, and yep I am in Brum Smile

TheOriginalNutcracker · 01/03/2011 09:28

Yeh thats what I ended up doing tiredof. Was wracking my brains trying to think what I had used.

coppertop · 01/03/2011 09:35

Ds1 got his first choice. I'm just relieved that the waiting is over.

TON - Are you the Nutcracker who's been here for a few years? If so, it's great to see you back as Nutty. :)

coppertop · 01/03/2011 09:36

Obviously meant "Nutty" as in your name, not implying you're mad or anything. Blush

TheOriginalNutcracker · 01/03/2011 09:39

Lol yes it is Nutty, and don't worry, I am a little nutty these days anyway Grin

coppertop · 01/03/2011 09:42

Hurray for the nutty Nutty then! Grin

foxinsocks · 01/03/2011 09:45

congrats to those who have got places and commiserations to those who haven't

nothing on the london website for our borough yet so maybe it will really come out at 5 and not earlier Grin

foxinsocks · 01/03/2011 09:47

(poor you willow, it sounds v painful. My gastritis just makes me sick rather than unbearable pain though it is painful but not as bad as yours. Have they done an endoscopy?)

sorry for odd sidetrack ;-)

foxinsocks · 01/03/2011 09:53

miniwedge = I think it's a wise idea to go on the waiting list for the one you really wanted. There is so much movement between now and September, it's certainly worth holding on just in case (loads of people move house, you have the private school people buggering off and leaving places etc etc.)

Mum2Luke · 01/03/2011 09:54

I've got 3 years yet till mine goes (can't wait -NOT) we live behind what is probably the best school in Tameside, Greater Manchester but that is no guarantee anymore which I think is ridiculous.

I want my lad to be able to get to school and back by himself, I see these parents dropping 12,13, 14 yr olds off in cars, why can't they cycle or use a bus or walk? To get in the school you have to live within 1-2 miles. The government makes it harder for 'middle class' parents too, they pay tax (probably more than most) yet they are penalised for wanting their kids in a good school.

It is harder for girls as there is only really one decent school locally, boys have Audenshaw and local comps. My daughter (now at 6th form) wanted to go to girls' school but was refused and most of her friends went yet did not live anywhere near the school, we were a direct bus ride away. In the end she went to one in Manchester (2 bus journeys each way) as she was given one nowhere near our house or on bus route. This turned out to be a big success, brilliant school - www.trinityhigh.com if you want to look. The only drawback was her friends all live the other side of Manchester in Didsbury/Chorlton!

jodee · 01/03/2011 09:55

Yes, congrats and commiserations all round so far -
anyone else in Bournemouth/Christchurch btw?

mankyscotslass · 01/03/2011 09:59

Mum2Luke, we want our boys to go to Audenshaw, but we are on the very edge of where they used to take from and mostly we don't get in from here. Plus wiuth the new school opening I have heard that they may go bsck to having feeder primarys. So no chance for us at all!

DD should be ok for Fairfield where we are.

One on my friends is disapponted this morning, they never got Audenshaw.

Good luck everyone, and Sad for those who never got their choice.

Madsometimes · 01/03/2011 10:00

Waiting in London. Dd1 has been offered a place a private school, and we are waiting to see which comprehensive she gets offered. Our first choice comprehensive is good, and most of her friends will be going there, but it does not have a 6th form.

If she goes there we will save £££, but will be doing this again in 5 short years, how much Wine can one woman drink in that time?

GORGEOUSX · 01/03/2011 10:12

Just want to say Sad to everyone who's disappointed, but also to re-iterate what foxinsocks said.

For those of you/us (I don't know yet) who did not get the school they wanted, the journey is not really over until 1st September, or even later - I KID YOU NOT.

Certainly, with regarding to waiting lists there is always a lot of movement between 1st March and 1st September and lots of 'shuffling around' with school places. I know someone whose DD actually spent a day at an indie school, before her first choice GS phoned, in September, (around the 5th or 6th) to say they had a place for her. The mother decided to forego the one or terms' fees she's paid, and the cost of the uniform and accepted the GS place.

So you/we can carry on with the Wine until then Smile

GORGEOUSX · 01/03/2011 10:13

sorry for typos

snowegg · 01/03/2011 10:21

We are in the same boat, Madsometimes, but also clinging to the hope of a place at GS. If we get that there will be no contest, if we are offered something not on our list we will go with private. We were JUST inside catchment for the nearest comp last year (glyn), but it's good and I guess the catchment will shrink - and I still have mixed views about this, though DS is keen. Roll on 5pm

bitsyandbetty · 01/03/2011 10:21

Ditto here. My friend's DC spent a week at one school but kept in touch with the head of the school she wanted to go to and then got a place. Needless to say they moved her.
