Why are there so many women over 50 who are single?

I was thinking the other night about the amount of women in their 50’s who are single.
I know of at least 10! (including myself)
I wonder if this is because menopause has made them realise they are happier alone so they don't make the concerted effort to meet someone? Or is is because men in their 50’s prefer younger women?
Just pondering really… 🤔

Im 44 but have just come out of a 26 year marriage. Im so happy being on my own with the kids. The house is cleaner, theres less food to buy, no dirty underpants thrown next to the washing basket, no walking on egg shells. Its great. Im seriously considering not looking for anyone else and staying single! I dont know why its taken me so long to make the break of splitting up. It was some form of societal pressure that you wont cope on your own/need a man in your life/shame of divorce! Its a load of rubbish

i do however feel immense sadness for all of those women before us who had no choice but to stick it out with their oafs. Then were celebrated for making it 50/60 years married. Good god, were they really happy years or a case of put up and shut up? 🧐

Jenny don’t let your ex put you off dating and being spoiled and romanced and wined and dined by men. Just let him be cautious about ever living with one again.

I’m currently married but know for a fact that I’d never get into a relationship again. I’ve no desire to share a home with anyone again, in fact myself and my marriage would be happier if I didn’t have to live with DH.

You don’t HAVE to live with him! You could sell house and buy two flats next to each other

What job do you do where you meet very many women every single day and talk to them about how and where they date and how they are so lonely and want a relationship?

I guess estate agent? Or cleaner?

I also feel repulsed by the amount of men who don't wash their hands after using the loo and straight away it puts more barriers up,I mean why would I want their fingers anywhere near me. Menopause is true, pausing men!

My mate runs a pub and says their male customers outnumber female by at least 10-1. Despite that the handsoap in the ladies needs refilling 3 times as often as the men’s - sadly not surprised

timetodecide2345 · 27/10/2025 06:02

Men are just a bit shit. Even the nice ones can be so inept to actually live with that women just can’t be arsed.

THisbackwithavengeance · 27/10/2025 07:11

Menopause means that you no longer have hormones in your body urging you to procreate. You are financially independent and likely have reached a good phase in your career. You have friends and your family in terms of your DCs is complete.

So why bother?

Thank you for this thread. I'm 45 and have just split up with a partner who in the beginning i believed might be the one. But who over time showed he wasn't financially secure, struggled to communicate and was over reliant on his ex wife from 12 years ago. Honestly I am upset but reading all of your posts I realise that that is not what I want for my future. I'm determined to focus on creating a happy, calm life for me and my children and if I don't meet anyone else so be it. I had already committed in my mind to staying single for a year to focus on me but this thread has reinforced the benefits of being single.

Was pondering this very subject today. I am late 40s and 75% of my female friends and work colleagues have left their partner in the last few years. Almost every single one stating their partner didn't even do the bare minimum around the house, with the kids, etc and are all sick to death of being the responsible one.

boobot1 · 10/11/2025 07:35

I know a lot of people and I only know 1 woman over 50 who is single and she is a recent widow. I've noticed it much more in the under 30s, almost all single.

Less patience for putting up with the general crap that comes with single men their age?

Ability to fund their own individual life means they don't need a second wage.

Enjoyment found in friends, pets, solitude first. Appreciation that the kid/husband management part of their life is over.

Not old enough to be of the generation where being married should be a woman's primary aim at all cost.

Nails it. Thanks😄

I'm 59 and divorced at 50.I have been single ( and celibate) now for 3 years,as lost interest in it.When I dated again I found men my own age boorish and too set in their ways, who just wanted sex but pretended they wanted a relationship.men who are younger only wanted to be FWB but at least they were up front about it.It all became rather boring though 🤣

labamba18 · 15/11/2025 04:39

I’ll tell you the tale of my two grandmas. They are both in their 80s now and both their husbands died in their 50s.

One has always wanted another partner. And she has never once struggled in 25 years to find men to date and who want to partner up. Some were younger and some older. She has always insisted on living separate to them and that they must have money and general good health for plenty of joint holidays. It’s why she’s going younger now!

Then there’s my other grandma who simply is done. She bats off any whiff on interest and is quite content alone, suiting herself and not having to care for anyone else’s needs.

Both are happy, but I’d say the latter is much more common. Don’t be fooled into thinking women on desperately trying to find men in their 50/60/70/80s - they aren’t. If they chose to they could find an array of them!
