Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. I have no voice left Grin Grin Grin dogs are running in panic Bike Bike Bike.

Hope everyone else is ok though, did I see Edvald hit the ground there?

What a final 1K.

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 16:18

And what a brilliant interview. The team, the charity, the soldiers. Class.

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 16:33

I do NOT have ANY tears in my eyes after that at all, no.

Mentioning the soldiers whilst holding his adorable daughter, how dare he.

Brilliant. SmileBike SmileBike FlowersStarFlowersStar

Shall we have a quick entente about posting here during stages? I may have given something away about the winner today further up.....

imo IF you are lucky enough to be able to watch stages as they happen then not posting here for chat and opinion is sort of contrary to having a space to chat and opinionise....and besides to not know of events in the day means not talking to anyone interested and avoiding twitter/web sites all day.
And...waiting for evening highlights means we will all probs be quite busy in the evenings and not have time to post.

So is there any sort of team agreement to be had?

Callmecordelia · 02/07/2016 18:01

Depends - at the weekends I will try to watch it live, but I'm less able to during the week.

Oh, who am I kidding. I'll watch both if I can. And I have no willpower so will be looking at spoilers anyway. Grin

FelixFelix · 02/07/2016 18:07

Pan so sorry I've only just seen your message but thank you for the offer anyway. Very kind of you!

I am just watching now as I've been out but annoyingly already seen who won the stage Sad

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 18:12

I couldn't have NOT posted earlier Grin. I did try to keep it vague but the next poster down spoiled it, although tbh I was never going to be that excited if Griepel had won was I?

If I watch the cycling it will probably be the live action or following it on twitter at work. I'm out every evening watching children do sport so will probably series record the highlights show and dip in and out when I can. If I want to wait and see the result myself I have a very strict social media ban until I've caught up.

So, umm, I think that comes out as me wanting to be able to post in real time if possible please?

FelixFelix · 02/07/2016 18:13

Sorry I didn't mean I saw the result from here by the way! I posted before I read that. I don't mind people posting in real time Smile

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 18:14

yes, I'm unable to watch anything in the week in the day ( those employer people expect me to work during Le Tour - meanies that they are) BUT imo it's a bit unfair to ask other tour watchers to stay schtum. But others may think differently?

You're welcome Felix.

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 18:15

It wasn't an easy one to keep away from to be fair was it, you'd have to lie down in a darkened room with ear plugs in!

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 18:17

Mark Cavendish has healed a divided nation!! if only

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 18:26

Cordelia - it's come up on threads over the years, so it was worth mentioning, I thought.
Consensus so far is to post happily away?

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2016 18:45

OMG!!!! That was brilliant, so happy for Cav! Smile

I screamed so loudly the dog leapt off the sofa in a panic.

I've been avoiding the thread as I recorded the coverage so I could skim through the ads.

I'm OK with live posting, I too have to work during the week so will have to watch later and catch up with the thread in the evenings.

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 19:03

Awesome wasn't it, I ended up almost standing on the back of the sofa with no recollection of how I got there and I am NOT the most mobile of people Grin. Dog ended up licking me on the eyeball in the confusion and happy shouting that went on after. So that was nice.

Flanderspigeonmurderer · 02/07/2016 19:24

I never would have thought it, is cav back to his best? Did one of the presenters say that he will be pulling out at some point to focus on the Olympus?

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 19:33

Not sure if he gets God status or not if he gets more stages, maybe Flanders, maybe Grin. Sorry, I am in a VERY silly mood and I haven't even had a drink yet. I don't know, he says that riding the tour is just like training for him but surely the danger of a crash is higher there than if he is churning it out round a velodrome. He looks like he's on even better form than before, I thought Kittel would have him at one point and then he just powered off.

FelixFelix · 02/07/2016 20:01

Just watched the finish now. Cav came out of nowhere! Watched the replay from above and it was very impressive.

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 20:27

How dare I forget about Cav today?! Of course this sort of sprint suits him & of course the TdF brings that extra bit out of him!
Well done sir, very happy to see (Cav &) Team Dimension Data Quebeka in the yellow jersey!
Would love to Edvald & Steve Cummings pick up stage wins too...

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/07/2016 21:04

Yay! I was standing on the sofa too. I don't mind spoilers as I just avoid all media in the afternoons when tdf is on.

ShutUpLegs · 02/07/2016 21:05

Just watching now. I haven't told DH that I have seen this thread and know how it turns out.

SO excited that its Ned 'n Dave this year rather than Phil n' Paul. End of an era but it was time for them to go.

Can;t get on to Velogames to check out our league but THRILLED to be name checked by Pan!

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2016 23:54

That is such a lovely picture Smile

It sums up just what it means to him.

MrSlant · 03/07/2016 00:12

It makes my eyes a little watery every time I look at it Blush. It's his 10th tour, I feel like I've been watching him since he was a little boy!

refereerendum · 03/07/2016 07:13

So time taken for Cav to cry - one stage! I loved Ned getting very excited. DH kept moving closer and close to the edge of the sofa until he almost fell off (I think he thinks this makes them go faster, bless).
Do you think David Millar's heart rate went up to, oh I don't know, above 0 during that finish?
