Le Tour de France 2016! - MN Peloton takes to the road again!

Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. And there's a fair olde chance of a Vuelta thread.... AND velogames will be open for business. A work matey of mine will want to join and I suspect he will be very good....

ThisPanCanCan · 24/07/2016 10:55

Am going to be out with dd and her mother this afternoon so all is on record.
I'll spend part of this afternoon getting the virtual podium out of the team car, so we can have the MN Velogames award ceremony at the end of the stage..Grin

Callmecordelia · 24/07/2016 12:48

At the risk of sounding really soppy, it was very special. My phone ringtone is the channel 4 Tour theme music. Blush

prettybird · 24/07/2016 14:14

Are the women more susceptible to touching wheels/losing concentration/nervousness? Last year I thought it was to do with the rain and slipperiness - but that can't be the reason this year Confused

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/07/2016 16:23

G looked way too comfortable cycling with that beer Grin

Callmecordelia · 24/07/2016 17:56

Kittel got a bit rattled there.

Callmecordelia · 24/07/2016 17:59

What happened to Tony Martin?

ThisPanCanCan · 24/07/2016 19:47

Just caught up with everything - that was a fast ending n'est-ce pas?? Kittel lost it totes and have no idea what happened to Mr Martin. Strange turn of events there?

We had an ambulance on La Course for a crasher, but no info on what happened to her.
And my recording thing stopped after Golden Thighs got his combativity award so haven't see anything of Froomey being crowned.

Been away all weekend so am catching up. Just twitched through the rainy descent of Friday. Yikes.

Now starting on Sat's stage. Wout Poels has earned his salary this year, hasn't he.

ThisPanCanCan · 24/07/2016 22:37

And the maillot jaune for 2016 is DramaAlpaca!!!!!! Air kisses Drama.

Second place is Saffa Queen !!!!. Bursting out of the pack to claim a podium place, well done! Air kisses Saffa.

Third place is IntheGruppetto!!! There or there abouts but holds form to stake a claim on the podium. Offers firm manly handshake to Chris.

The 'blue' jersey gets shared between Atia and MrSlant, though this was otherwise uncontested. Grin

The first of two 'magical' jersey goes to Atia!!! for her 2nd hand reports, the quality of photos/relays and generally having agents on the course. Air kisses Atia.

The second 'magical' jersey goes to Cordelia!! for leading for parts, fighting hard for a place and the warmth of attachment via dad for being involved in the whole shebang! Air kisses Cordelia.

Crowd demand speech from DramaAplaca.

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2016 22:45

I've been out most of the day so just caught up with the final stage now.

Loved Team Sky riding along with their bottles of beer Grin

Greipel was chuffed to bits to win the stage.

And I am chuffed to bits too, and a bit Blush and Shock ending up on top of the MN league. I'm very glad I packed that yellow jersey Wink. Well done my boys, you did me proud!

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2016 22:55

Oops! Cross posted with Pan's award ceremony while I was writing my post above. Loving all the awards & the jerseys Smile

I'm not much of a one for speeches, but just want to say that this has been such a fun thread in one of the nicest corners of MN.

Roll on the Vuelta! Bike

MrSlant · 24/07/2016 23:08

Well I do look rather fetching in blue do I get a stuffed animal too? Was well and truly beaten by DS1 in the end but HE didn't get a jersey so ner Grin

Was very pleased for Griepel. Did someone give Tony Martin side eye on the roll into Paris then? I can't believe anyone would abandon that close to the finish with a sore knee.

Looking forward to the Vuelta now, hoping my DS1.5 will be showing us he is more than just a lovely big grin. And we have an Olympics as well, how exciting Grin Bike Grin

MrSlant · 24/07/2016 23:09

Chapeau Drama, excellent work there, both with your 'oh I won't bother I'll be terrible' pre match psych out and your excellent team selection Grin.

Callmecordelia · 24/07/2016 23:17

Congratulations Drama! Flowers

I'm very pleased to receive a magical jersey.

ThisPanCanCan · 24/07/2016 23:21

Well done Cordelia. Brilliant showing and the magical jersey suits you, as it was designed to!Grin

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/07/2016 23:40

Merci beaucoup! Mon maillot est magnifique! Vive le Tour!

Can't wait for the Olympics and the Vuelta Smile Rather looking forward to having my family home too Grin

MrSlant · 24/07/2016 23:47

I bet Atia, where were they today? I bet you've missed them like crazy. Where are you going to put Froome's numbers? I'd have to get them framed or something but then I'm a sad fangirl, that and the Welsh flag as seen on TV Grin Dragon

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/07/2016 23:55

Think they were near the Tuileries gardens this afternoon. Haven't spoken to them tonight except to moan about dd1 to dh.

They watched some of La Course near the Arc de Triomphe and then it got too hot so they found some shade and lunch. I Snapchatted them during La Course, about where they were, and got a photo of dd saying "er, not sure", with the Eiffel Tower right behind her Grin

As far as I know, Froome's numbers are stuck firmly onto their panniers! I'm looking forward to seeing the collection of bidons and caravane tat Smile

ThisPanCanCan · 24/07/2016 23:56

And here's a thought..it's only 332 sleeps before Le Tour starts all over again.

ShutUpLegs · 25/07/2016 11:56

Still have to watch yesterday's stage.

How about a Velogames league for the Veulta so Pan and I can lock once again in mid-table combat?

I can't aspire to the heady heights of Alpaca-management.

ThisPanCanCan · 25/07/2016 12:41

There's nothing wrong with mediocrity is there? It's really cool! not really.

velogames will be open a couple of weeks before Vuelta so if we keep an eye we can aim low again.Grin

maamalady · 25/07/2016 20:49

Hooray for Froomedog! And Greipel, although he has lost his spot as DD1's favourite cyclist to Richie Porte. Very cute watching her pretend to be him while wobbling around on her balance bike, cheering for herself "well done Richie!" Grin

I will do my best to organise a velogames team for the vuelta, maybe DD2 will be a bit less work by then.

Well done on winning, Drama! And what a fabulous time your lot have had, Atia, what a great experience.

Is there any news on the crashes in La Course? Some of the riders went down very hard.

DramaAlpaca · 25/07/2016 22:15

Thank you all! Smile

I have to thank my secret weapon, Adam Yates, for it was his unexpectedly stunning performance that helped my team win the MN league. I had a quick look at everyone else's teams and I don't think anyone else picked him. He was a very lucky pick for me.

And I'm delighted, because I never win anything, least of all a yellow jersey Grin

Looking forward to having another go at the Vuelta no pressure.

I've been watching the Tour de Wallonie today, but it's not the same, it's not the Tour...
