Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. Hi MN peloton, I've lurked on the TDF thread last year but thought I'd join in this time! What's happened to commentators Phil and Paul? From Twitter it seems it wasn't their choice not to do the ITV commentary this year, does anyone know what happened? I love Ned and Dave but Dave is a bit mumbly and I will miss Ned's post race interviews and the banter with Chris Boardman.
What a great first day though!

MrSlant · 03/07/2016 08:37

Dave is VERY mumbly and the ITV sound quality was very poor. It's lovely to be right in the mix hearing what the riders hear as they pedal along but when the crowds cheering actually drowns out what the presenters are saying it's a bit pants. I'm deaf and really struggled it was really frustrating as far as I could tell it was very interesting commentary but I couldn't hear it. Had to go over to Eurosport which is saying something because normally Sean Kelly is indecipherable for me but they had the crowd on mute which was much better! It made me a bit grumpy.

I love how Cav cries, he is just the absolute heart on the sleeve person I think that's why I like him. Just checked his wiki and he's 31, he grew up so fast Grin.

prettybird · 03/07/2016 08:48

Got so annoyed about the BBC News not mentioning anything about his win Shock (but having time for the cricket Hmm) that I complained about it on Twitter even though in not that active on Twitter

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 09:09

Waking up to Cav Day!!!

Wot he did: BikeBikeBikeBike------------Bike

Loved the way he looked round a couple of times in the last 100mtrs or so, just to make sure, and then changed lines a couple of times to get the right wheel.

Welcome Hazel! And of course you're right ShutUpLegs - there is no finer accolade, n'est-ce pas? Smile

Read this morning one tour watcher saying of Bertie's crash, "Well lets hope it's more serious than it looks"....

MrSlant · 03/07/2016 09:11

I found ITV Sport on twitter with a mind to complain but got a bit overwhelmed with the whole tweeting someone business Blush.

It is rubbish that it's not plastered everywhere, such an achievement in a sport that laughed at the UK for so long. Humph.

Apparently Sagan thought the stage was 'boring'. I'm not going to say anything else because apparently other people like him Grin.

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 09:13

Quite liked Phil and Paul. Whilst Ned is quite funny and I've read one of his books, I'm a bit Confused at him getting major billing on the piece de resistance opus major of the bike year. Too many times Gorgeous Dave has to step in to correct or amend his observations.

MrSlant · 03/07/2016 09:13

Poor poor Bertie couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

It was a perfect final 1K for him, he's got an amazing brain to go with his sporting ability, to read the peloton like that when going, what, 70kph at times? Genius. Still not heard back about Edvald though, looked like he thumped into the ground.

MrSlant · 03/07/2016 09:15

Well see I wouldn't know because I couldn't bloody hear either of them! Dave sounded very knowledgable as well when I could make his words out.

VeryPunny · 03/07/2016 09:15

The speeds were incredible, weren't they? So, so pleased for Cav!

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 09:16

He maxed at 68 k/hour which is 42.253241072 miles per hour. Approximately.....Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 09:22

Interestingly he was talking a couple of years ago that he'd been training to get a second wind in a sprint. That he found he had one shot and then slowed down rapidly, like a 'little death'.....and the reading from his sprint from the last k showed him hitting 68k/h at about 70 mtrs...and then kicking again back up to 68k/m.
Would his track training for Rio have given him a kick as well?

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 09:49

Just seen the Eurosport version of the sprint. Was half expecting to hear "Mrs Merkel, your boys took a hell of a beating!"

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 09:55

Juan's shirt is straight out of the packaging! Is that evidence of a walk of shame?Wink

SaffaQueen · 03/07/2016 10:19

"After a brilliant leadout job, Edvald Boasson Hagen crashed in the final. Don't worry though, EBH is okay & celebrating with us!" said Team Dimension Data on Twitter.

Today could be a stage for Edvald...hope so!

Smart money would be on Sagan or even Greg van Avermaet

maamalady · 03/07/2016 10:23

So so pleased for Cav, he is going to be grinning all day today :)

Did anyone see Contador go down? Not sure why he did, he looked like a toddler just toppling over. But really fast and with lots of missing skin... OUCH.

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 10:23

That's good Saffa as he will need to be leading Cav out to victory in 3 week's time on the Champs Elysee!!

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 10:25

I think he just leaned a bit too much on the bend, and possibly there was something on the road. Tough nights sleeping being had no doubt.

hazelnutlatte · 03/07/2016 10:32

I was surprised to find nothing about Cav's win on the front page of the BBC news website this morning - do most people in the UK even realise the Tour de France is happening? Cav said at one point that the yellow jersey was never his goal - I bet it has been since the very first time he raced his bike! The emotion on his face said it all.

DramaAlpaca · 03/07/2016 12:49

Juan's shirt is straight out of the packaging! Is that evidence of a walk of shame? Wink

Either that or he spilled his lunch down his front Grin

SaffaQueen · 03/07/2016 13:00

Haha, I have a soft spot for Juan...something very endearing about him(more so than pastel pants Ashley).
Cougar bait.

msrisotto · 03/07/2016 13:03

Does anyone else find David Millar sleep inducing? So monotone.

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 13:05

Cougar bait! I suspect that's in his CV.

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 13:33

Poor having Cougar Bait talking to camera whilst in an inset we are seeing the aftermath of a crash.

ThisPanCanCan · 03/07/2016 13:34

Fab seeing Cav riding in yellow.

VeryPunny · 03/07/2016 13:47

Love the Katusha kit this year - much classier than previous efforts.
