Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. Hello! I shall be watching, the tour is the highlight of our year and we love to sing along to the theme tune! I'm a bit behind with cycling at the moment, the last two years we have missed large chunks of the tour due to being on holiday. And I can't even watch tonight's highlights as we're going out for dinner.
Who is in with the best chance? I'm a fan of Quintana

Flanderspigeonmurderer · 02/07/2016 11:51

Oops posted too soon!
Never mind, allez le tour!

FelicityLemon · 02/07/2016 11:52

And we're off!

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 11:54

Groete Flanders - Love your nic!
Think it has to be Froome barring injury - that Sky team is just so clinical. A lot of their domestiques could be GC contenders elsewhere.
Would also love Quintana to win. At least Valverde is def working for him this year. He needs more allies in the peleton though to break up the Sky train...

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 11:55

How about an Aru-Nibbles-Contador-Valverde-Quintana collusion vs Team Sky & poodle Porte?

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 11:57

I quite fancy Brian Coquard for the sprint upset later..
Kittel the safe prediction..
Other poster Predictions?

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 11:58

I took Aru as Nibbles is off at the end of the season and Aru is the future. He took the Giro and Astana might see a team decision as Nibbles takes Giro, Aru the Tour.
Might be completely wrong of course!

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 12:00

Roman Bardet as an outsider on the podium.

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 12:01

Speaking of Astana, looks like Sagan is off to them next season..

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 12:05

Griepel's hair is looking amazing so I rate him for the sprint personally.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd want Nibbles at my back, you don't get to be him by going 'oh yes, of course I'll work for the young userper, no problem, I'll just be back here getting the bottles' Grin. I wonder if we'll see moments like Froome/Wiggins where he has to be called back to do his job. Bet HE wouldn't go back.

Sky v clinical. Did I dream that G would have had a more free ranging role to do his own thing but after his 'disappointing' tour of Switzerland is back in as super domestique?

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 12:05

18 teams in our league. tres bien! Bike

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 12:07

Love the idea of an 'Aru-Nibbles-Contador-Valverde-Quintana collusion' Saffa.

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 12:09

Hmmm MrSlant

Chavannel, Cavendish, Cancellara.

Are you sure you were choosing with your heart there? Wink

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 12:11

Yip, think G blew his chance for that opportunity at the TdS.
I think Nibbles-Aru harmony in Astana camp is very, err,"sensitive". Think Nibbles is saying the right things in favour of Aru, but the reality is that in his head he is still the main man until he leaves for that new Bahrain team.

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 12:13

Hope it happens, Mr Slant. Would make a very exciting TdF. And if Froome could meet the attacks and hold the wheel, sans team mates, then chapeau & a deserved champion.

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 12:14

Missing Nico Roche this tour Sad

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 12:18

I totally agree re Froome Saffa, I rather suspect he could, the amazing team are belt and braces really. Oooh, I want a good interesting three weeks, lots of rivalries and riders sticking with old loyalties or even working together on a shared enemy basis. Great stuff.

Pan I have absolutely NO idea what you mean.

SaffaQueen · 02/07/2016 12:31

Yup. The last thing I want is riders playing it safe and saving their attacks till the last few kilometres of the last few mountain stages in week 3.
Or the tour effectively being decided by cross winds in week 1 Hmm

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 13:58

I've just looked at our teams. ShutUpLegs TeamProsecco and DramaAlpaca looking really strong.

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 14:16

And mine looks really sexy Grin Grin Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 14:36

D'accord!

We could play a TdF drinking game.
Each time Chavannel is mentioned on commentary I have a gulp of Chateau Neuf du Pape.

Each time Froome is mentioned, we all have to have a gulp of a nice Kenyan zinfandel.

Or maybe not.Grin

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 14:51

I don't have enough alcohol in the house to keep that up for more than two stages Grin. Could also be troublesome at work, not that I watch the tour at work on the computer because that would be terrible Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 14:58

Brambilla isn't here to win the most combative prize, is he?

MrSlant · 02/07/2016 16:07

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD.

ThisPanCanCan · 02/07/2016 16:08

CAAAAAAAAAAVVV!!!!!!
